Congress Members Can Use Campaign Funds for Bodyguards, FEC Rules

Congress members will now be permitted to use campaign cash to hire bodyguards, the Federal Election Commission (FEC) ruled Thursday, after hours of debate.

Under the FEC ruling, House and Senate members may use campaign funds to hire private security personnel without violating the prohibition on personal use, for occasions when they aren’t under the protection of Capitol law enforcement on the Hill.

It comes amid heightened concern about the safety of lawmakers amid the tense political climate across the country and the Jan. 6 breach of the U.S. Capitol building. The Department of Justice said late January that more than 150 people have been charged over the incident.

“I’ve never thought of us as a country where the leadership of the country had to be surrounded by armed guards and needed to keep the public at arm’s length at all times,” Commissioner Ellen Weintraub said Thursday, Politico reported.

The FEC ruling comes after attorneys representing the National Republican Congressional Committee and the National Republican Senatorial Committee submitted a letter (pdf) to the six-member commission on Jan. 26 asking for guidance on whether lawmakers can use campaign funds to pay for personal security personnel “to protect the Member and the Member’s immediate family from threatened harm.”

“In light of current events involving concrete threats of physical violence against Members and their families, Members have been compelled to consider further security measures for themselves and their families,” the officials in their letter January. “As has been well-documented in the media, Members and their families continue to endure threats and security breaches, which are being timely reported to appropriate law enforcement officials.”

The commission previously ruled that lawmakers could use campaign cash to upgrade their home-security systems.

Prior to Thursday’s ruling, the regulator allowed the use of campaign funds for personal security if there was evidence that lawmakers could face specific, immediate threats while carrying out their official duties.

In July 2019, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) spent $1,300 in campaign funds to hire protection at a town hall, after receiving an online threat that month.

In June 2017, a white male gunman opened fire on Republican lawmakers at a baseball field, wounding senior Republican leader Steve Scalise (pdf).

Last year, a total of 4,894 threats were made against lawmakers tracked by Capitol law enforcement, up from 902 threats in 2016. The number of threats is expected to rise further this year, Politico reported.

“Threats have an impact,” said Rep. Kevin Hertel (D-Mich.). “You can hear the fear in people’s voices when they talk about these issues.”

In a statement on March 8, the U.S. Capitol Police said that there needs to be an increase in its manpower and overall response capabilities to provide adequate protection for Congressional members.

Trump Asks If Durham's Still Alive, and If His Russia Report Will Ever Emerge

In a scathing bit of mockery, former President Donald Trump issued a statement Friday night asking if Special Counsel John Durham is still alive, as the prosecutor's probe into the origins of the Russia collusion probe drags on.

Durham has been looking at the FBI's Crossfire Hurricane, the bureau's inquiry into the Trump 2016 presidential campaign's alleged links to Russia, for about two years. Trump Attorney General Bill Barr designated him "special counsel" last October.

For the former president, who has long derided the FBI probe as a hoax and witch hunt, patience appears to be wearing thin, even though he's been out of office since late January.

"Where’s Durham? Is he a living, breathing human being? Will there ever be a Durham report?" Trump said in a statement, according to Fox News.

Trump, still looking for vindication, has repeatedly accused the FBI of improper conduct in his probe and overreliance on an unverified and at times salacious dossier of information compiled by onetime British intel agent Christopher Steele. Ultimately, insufficient evidence was found by that inquiry's special counsel, Robert Mueller, to show collusion between Trump's campaign operatives and Moscow.

Durham and other U.S. attorneys who served under Trump were asked to resign earlier this year by incoming President Joe Biden. But while Durham has given up his role as U.S. attorney for Connecticut, he kept his status as special counsel looking into the Russia inquiry. Biden himself has said he will not interfere with any Justice Department investigations.

A trustee in Ohio's West Chester Township delivered a powerful reaction to Asian American discrimination this week, as the nation grapples with a spike in hate crimes against the minority over the past year.

Lee Wong, a 69-year-old Army veteran, took off his suit jacket and shirt during a town hall he was chairing, exposing scars across his chest as he asked, "Is this patriot enough?"

"I don't say much about much what happens unless it uh…hit me," Mr. Wong said, as he addressed the room.

He went on to explain that he came to the U.S. when he was 18, and noted that he had been an American citizen since long before most attendees had even been born. "For too long, we have, I have, put up with a lot of s*** in silence, excuse the language, too afraid to speak out, fearing more abuse and discrimination," Wong said according to dictation from The Cincinnati Enquirer.

"People question my patriotism, that I don't look American enough," Wong said. "They could not get over this face. I want to show you something, I don't have to live in fear, intimidation, insults."

As Wong spoke, he removed his tie, unbuttoned his shirt, and lifted his undershirt to reveal a scar across his ribcage. He said, "I'll show you what patriotism looks like," and as he showed his scars sustained during military service he asked, "Is this patriot enough?"

Wong said later that his speech and actions were unplanned, explaining to the Enquirer later, "In that moment, I don't know what came over me. I just knew I had to say something."

The outlet noted that Wong campaigned for his seat while riding a Segway and wearing a "Make America Great Again" cap, and he says the reaction from his town hall have been overwhelmingly supportive.

"People thank me for my service," Wong said, "People are glad I spoke. West Chester is a diverse community and we don't need that kind of rhetoric."

Hate crimes against Asian Americans reportedly shot up 150% in 2020 amid the COVID-19 pandemic according to some estimates, with experts blaming the rise in violence with rhetoric criticizing China — where the disease originated.

The issue has become a political football, with Democrats blaming former President Donald Trump for his comments such as calling COVID-19 the "China virus," although it was widely known as the "Wuhan virus" when it first emerged.

Meanwhile, Asian Americans are fighting back to defend themselves, with gun shop owners claiming for the past year they've seen a noticeable rise in the number of Asian American buyers.

But guns aren't the only way folks are defending themselves. Last week, an Asian American woman in her 70's beat the tar out of a thug who sucker punched her in San Francisco, sending him away on a stretcher as she sobbed and refused to let go of the board she beat him back with.
