IMO, it would be extremely rare, for a subject to know. If they're student aged, I think they're probably culled and observed via "special" classes and programs. Their feelings of hatred and violent tendencies are massaged and they're made to feel that their anger is justified; righteous, even. Of course, not every person is able to be used this way, but it always turns out that the FBI new and the mental health people knew, and the perp is usually on psychotropic drugs or whatever they're called. They probably have an army of them, in the wings. Watch the Manchurian Candidate (the one with streep, so you can dislike her even more). Then, ask yourself, "Did he know he was being used?"

I'm so sorry, anon. I hope you're doin' alright. A loved one is on so many meds (the bad ones) for psych issues, but … I always think he's worse, when he's on that stuff. I mean…it can get pretty scary for him…and others. To top it off, it's the VA who's prescribing. But, of course there are villains there, as well as in the civilian sector.
