Rep. Matt Gaetz's father Don sold his hospice company for $406million and used the money to fund his political career - before being 'extorted' over sex trafficking investigation and Iran hostage rescue

Rep. Matt Gaetz's father made millions by selling his hospice company in 2004 and used the money to launch his own political career, years before they were 'extorted' over allegations the younger Gaetz slept with an underage girl.

The bizarre and complex chain of events was set off on Tuesday when The New York Times reported that Gaetz, 38, was under investigation for allegedly sleeping with a 17-year-old girl two years ago and trafficking her across state lines.

He hit back angrily saying it was not true and that his family was being extorted for $25million. His father Don, a former Florida Senator from 2006 until 2016, is backing him up and says he even wore a wire to a meeting with one of the extortionists to try to help expose the plot.

On Thursday, Gaetz claimed in documents he handed to The Washington Examiner that the plot had another element - the people involved were claiming to extort him to free American hostage Robert Levinson, who was captured in Iran in 2002 while working for the CIA.

He said the extortionists told his family they needed $25milliont to free Levinson - whose family say is dead - and that in exchange, the team that rescued Levinson would ask President Joe Biden to pardon Gaetz from any sex trafficking charges.

The amount the extortionists apparently asked for is the same amount that Don Gaetz's net worth was reported as when he launched his first Senatorial campaign in 2006.

He and his partners had sold Vitas, a hospice company, two years earlier for $406million. It's unclear how many partners there were, but when Don was campaigning, his net worth was well reported.

The family comes from Niceville, Florida, a conservative, Christian town on the panhandle.

Don's own father, Jerry, was the mayor of a small town in North Dakota. Don was referred to as 'baby Gaetz' early on in his career.

He and his partners founded Vitas in the 1970s and turned it into the largest hospice care provider in the country, after lobbying Congress to have their care paid for under Medicaid and Medicare.

They sold the company in 2004 but were later sued for Medicaid fraud. The lawsuit did not name Don specifically, and he denied wrongdoing.

Don was well-liked in the Senate because he was considered 'old fashioned' and 'decent'. His views, while Republican, are less extreme than his son's.

'Don Gaetz was very much more of an old-school Republican. He would tell you that Matt is much more tea party Republican than he is,' Ben Wilcox told Mother Jones for a profile on the pair in 2019.

Matt launched his political career in Florida in 2010.

He has since made a name for himself supporting Trump, at times mimicking his combustive and combative style.

He is engaged to Ginger Luckey, who he met at a Trump fundraiser at Mar-a-Lago in March 2020 and proposed to her there in December.

She has not commented on the current controversy.

He has spoken in the past about how his mother became partially paralyzed due to complications she suffered while pregnant with his sister, and how her devotion to the pregnancy and baby has enforced his anti-abortion views.

Record number of unaccompanied children crossed the border in March

The number of unaccompanied children crossing the border in March reached more than 18,500, according to preliminary Customs and Border Protection data obtained by NBC News, smashing the previous record as the Biden administration scrambles to set up new shelters to accommodate them.

The March total is at least 60 percent higher than the previous record of 11,494 in May 2019. The data is still preliminary and may change slightly before its official release.

The figures go back to 2010 when the border patrol began keeping track of how many migrants arrived as unaccompanied minors.

The dramatic increase in unaccompanied children follows the Biden administration’s policy of expelling all migrants except minors who come alone. It has resulted in hundreds of children being held in overcrowded border patrol stations far past the 72-hour legal limit.

Overall encounters with migrants of all ages were at a 20-year high in March, as over 170,000 attempted to cross, according to the preliminary data. Most adults, however, were turned back under Title 42, a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention authority both the Trump and the Biden administrations have used to block migration during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The previous high was set in March 2001 when 172,849 migrants were apprehended by the Border Patrol.

Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas recently said the Border Patrol was on track to see a 20-year high in border crossings.

However, President Joe Biden has been reluctant to say the traffic of migrants at the border is unusual.

“The truth of the matter is: Nothing has changed,” Biden said in a press conference last week. “It happens every single, solitary year. There is a significant increase in the number of people coming to the border in the winter months of January, February, March. That happens every year.”

The number of families crossing the border in March was more than 52,000, still below the record of 84,526 set in May 2019 under the Trump administration. While many families are sent back under Title 42, an increasing number, especially in the Rio Grande Valley, are allowed to stay in the United States while they await a court decision on their immigration case due to Mexico’s limited capacity to take them back.

Boeing urges U.S. to separate China trade and human rights

Boeing Co urged the United States on Wednesday to keep human rights and other disputes separate from trade relations with Beijing, and warned European rival Airbus would gain if the U.S. planemaker were locked out of China.Chief Executive Dave Calhoun told an online business forum he believed a major aircraft subsidy dispute with Europe could be resolved after 16 years of wrangling at the World Trade Organization, but contrasted this with the outlook on China.

“I think politically (China) is more difficult for this administration and it was for the last administration. But we still have to trade with our largest partner in the world: China,” he told the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Aviation Summit.

Noting multiple disputes, he added: “I am hoping we can sort of separate intellectual property, human rights and other things from trade and continue to encourage a free trade environment between these two economic juggernauts. … We cannot afford to be locked out of that market. Our competitor will jump right in.”

Boeing and Airbus each sell about a quarter of their jetliners to China, which has edged past the United States as the world’s largest domestic travel market.

China typically makes block purchases for imported jets, often coinciding with U.S. or European diplomatic visits.

Boeing began to face questions over its share of the Chinese market as the United States and China waged an 18-month trade war under then-U.S. President Donald Trump, though China’s jet purchases have slowed across the board in recent years.

Beijing increasingly also faces tensions with the West over its treatment of ethnic and religious minorities in Xinjiang, and has warned foreign companies not to step into politics.

China rejects U.S. charges it has committed genocide against Uighur and other Muslims in the remote western region, where activists say more than 1 million people are held in internment camps.The White House and U.S. Trade Representative did not immediately respond to requests for comment on Calhoun’s remarks.

Vermont Gov. Scott: Those Who Identify as ‘Black, Indigenous, or a Person of Color’ Eligible to Sign Up for Vaccine

Vermont Gov. Phil Scott (R) announced on Thursday those who identify as black, indigenous, or a “person of color” can now sign up to receive the coronavirus vaccine. Eligibility for all adults is not expected to open up until later this month.

“If you or anyone in your household identifies as Black, Indigenous, or a person of color (BIPOC), including anyone with Abenaki or other First Nations heritage, all household members who are 16 years or older can sign up to get a vaccine!” the governor announced, providing a link to the state’s website:

Only certain categories of people are now eligible to sign up to receive the coronavirus vaccine in the Green Mountain State. That includes those 50 and older, people 16 and older who have “high risk” health conditions, parents or primary caregivers of those with “high risk” health conditions, school staff, and child care workers, public safety workers, health care personnel, nursing home residents, “English language learners and people in immigrant/refugee communities,” and now “Black, Indigenous and people of color (BIPOC),” per the state.

It remains unclear how the state is implementing the rule, as anyone could, technically, “identify” as whatever race they choose.

His announcement drew significant backlash on social media.

“I have a dream that our children will one day live in a nation where they will receive medical treatment according to the color of their skin, providing the governor has already had his,” one user said.

Some Twitter users quoted the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Others commented directly on the legality of the Governor’s statement:

The state is expected to open eligibility to the remainder of the population by April 19.

“Our data also shows us that we have much farther to go with progress through our vaccination efforts,” Vermont’s state health commissioner Mark Levine said this week.

“We get closer to the finish line every day,” he added. “It’s now less than three weeks until all Vermonters are eligible to sign up for their dose of vaccine.”

According to the state’s coronavirus dashboard, 213,656 people in Vermont have received at least one dose of the vaccine, as of April 2.

‘Trial Run’ of Domestic Coronavirus Passports in Britain Expected Within Weeks: Report

Prime Minister Boris Johnson will reportedly introduce a trial run for domestic coronavirus passports, testing the scheme at a few high profile events over the coming weeks.

Despite growing backlash from within his own party against the idea of coronavirus passports, Johnson’s government is said to be preparing an announcement of a trial run of the scheme at a few high profile football matches, the World Snooker Championship, and possibly the Brit Awards — the British equivalent to the Grammys.

Those wishing to attend the events will be required to take a COVID test before entering as well as upon leaving the event, in order to track the potential spread of the Chinese virus.

Government sources also told The Telegraph that some of the pilots will also feature a test of a new National Health Service COVID status certification app, which will contain information on an individual’s vaccination status, recent coronavirus tests, and antibody levels.

Now, as noted by the Washington Examiner, his virtual acceptance speech is drawing fire for his admission of what conservatives have always believed the mainstream media believed: "fairness is overrated."

Holt was sure to warn listeners not to jump too quickly on what he realized was a headline-making comment the moment it left his lips and tried to assure the public that he was talking about the disseminating of lies and fake news, but it was clear to his observers and critics that he was going after conservatives and any Trump supporters who may have issues with the liberal press.

Pfizer a “habitual offender” that “persistently” engages in illegal activity, study warns

Back in 2010, the journal Europe PMC published a study outlining the extensive criminal history of Pfizer, one of the most corrupt pharmaceutical companies in the world.

The relevancy of this study today cannot be overstated, especially as millions of Pfizer-BioNTech’s experimental Wuhan coronavirus (Covid-19) vaccines are being plunged into people’s arms daily. Can this multi-billion-dollar corporate behemoth really be entrusted with carrying the load of public health during a plandemic?

In a word, no. Pfizer is a “habitual offender” that “persistently engag[es] in illegal and corrupt marketing practices, bribing physicians and suppressing adverse trial results.”

“Since 2002 the company and its subsidiaries have been assessed $3 billion in criminal convictions, civil penalties and jury awards,” study author Robert G. Evans outlines.

“The $2.3 billion settlement in September 2009 … set a new record for both criminal fines and total penalties.”

Evans’ paper goes on to expose multiple Pfizer products that were illegally marketed for “off-label” use, which resulted in patients being injured or killed. Pfizer illegally paid kickbacks to physicians to prescribe these drugs for unapproved uses. Such drugs include:

• Bextra (valdecoxib), a pain medication that was later pulled from the market

• Geodon (ziprasidone HCl), an atypical antipsychotic

• Zyvox (linezolid), an antibiotic

• Lyrica (pregabalin), a seizure medication

• Viagra (sildenafil), an erectile dysfunction drug

• Lipitor (atorvastatin), a cholesterol drug

Pfizer subsidiaries have committed countless crimes over the years

These are just the drugs for which Pfizer was caught committing crimes, mind you. There were also many more cases prior in which Pfizer pleaded guilty for breaking the law.

In 2007, Pfizer subsidiary Pharmacia & Upjohn (P&U) paid $34 million and pleaded guilty to paying kickbacks for formulary placement of its drugs. P&U entered into a Deferred Prosecution Agreement for off-label distribution of Genotropin, the company’s brand name for the human growth hormone (HGH) somatropin.

Three years earlier in 2004, Pfizer subsidiary Warner-Lambert pleaded guilty and paid more than $430 million to resolve criminal charges and civil liability for fraudulently marketing Neurontin (gabapentin). Originally developed for epilepsy, Neurontin was promoted by Warner-Lambert for the off-label treatment of neurological pain, including that associated with migraines.

Two years prior to that, Warner-Lambert and another Pfizer subsidiary known as Parke-Davis paid out $49 million to resolve civil claims alleging that the two companies failed to report best prices for their Lipitor drug as required under the Medicaid Drug Rebate Statute.

Nearly a decade later, Pfizer was once again ordered to pay out a large sum of cash, this time for $142 million, to resolve claims of again illegally marketing gabapentin for off-label use.

“Data revealed in a string of U.S. lawsuits indicates the drug was promoted by the drug company as a treatment for pain, migraines and bipolar disorder – even though it wasn’t effective in treating these conditions and was actually toxic in certain cases, according to the Therapeutics Initiative, an independent drug research group at the University of British Columbia,” reports indicate.

“The trials forced the company to release all of its studies on the drug, including the ones it kept hidden.”

While these payout sums might sound like a lot of money, they are mere drops in the bucket compared to what Pfizer and its subsidiaries rake in for profit. In Canada alone, Neurontin sales top $300 million per year which, calculated over the course of several decades since the drug was first approved, amounts to many billions of dollars.

With all that said, it is perplexing that members of the public trust Pfizer’s rushed, liability-free vaccine for the Chinese virus enough to let roadside medical personnel inject them with it while hoping for the best.

Scandal-Plagued Oxfam Suspends Two Staff Amidst Misconduct Accusations in Congo

British international charity Oxfam has confirmed it has suspended two staff amidst an independent investigation into intimidation, sexual misconduct, and abuse of power in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The non-governmental organisation had launched an investigation in November 2020 into claims that senior managers were engaged in fraud, nepotism, and bullying. However, whistleblowers have said they have been voicing their concerns about alleged misconduct by Oxfam staff on mission in the central African country since 2015.

The abuse allegations were detailed in a February letter signed by 22 former and current Oxfam staff and sent to the charity’s head office in Oxford, England. The letter, seen by The Times and reported on Friday, accused 11 people of misconduct. All 11 were allegedly still employed until the recent suspensions, according to the newspaper.

The claims detail that managers engaged in a “culture of bullying” as well as having sexually harassed female employees. Some were also allegedly having sexual relationships with junior members of staff.

Further claims involve the lack of confidentiality of the complaints system, meaning that managers had access to reports by whistleblowers, resulting in threats and intimidation if staff pursued complaints.

Whistleblowers claimed that they had been subject to “threats to their lives and their families’ lives”, including allegations of poisonings or attempted poisonings, according to The Times.

Corruption allegations were also made related to the awarding of contracts for consultants, accommodation, and travel.

Oxfam’s chief executive Danny Sriskandarajah received the letter two days before the UK’s Charity Commission had deemed that the Oxford-based NGO had deemed that “people served or employed by the charity are now better protected against abuse, exploitation, and other forms of harm” since the Haiti scandal was exposed three years ago — a ruling which “came as a surprise” to one source.

A spokesman for the charity confirmed that two staff were suspended, telling the newspaper: “We can confirm we have suspended two members of Oxfam staff in the DRC as part of an ongoing external investigation, which we set up last November, into allegations of abuses of power, including bullying and sexual misconduct.

“We are acutely aware of our duty to survivors, including in supporting them to speak out safely. We are working hard to conclude the investigation fairly, safely and effectively.”

The allegations come only one month after the British government approved Oxfam to apply for public funds since the 2018 Haiti scandal. In the 2017-2018 financial year, the government had given £31.7 million in taxpayers’ cash to the international charity.

In 2018, it was revealed that Oxfam aid workers had engaged in the sexual exploitation of vulnerable people in Haiti between 2010 and 2011 after the country had been devastated by an earthquake. The same year it faced fresh accusations of rape and sexual assault by its aid workers in South Sudan.

US plans lifting Trump's sanctions on ICC officials

The administration of US President Joe Biden plans to revoke the sanctions imposed by his predecessor, President Donald Trump, on the International Criminal Court (ICC) top officials as early as this week, the Foreign Policy magazine reported.

"Much as we disagree with the ICC's actions relating to the Afghanistan and Palestinian situations, the administration is thoroughly reviewing sanctions pursuant to Executive Order 13928 as we determine our next steps," the report quoted an unnamed State Department spokesperson as saying.

Last January, Israel expressed concern that the Biden administration might reconsider the sanctions imposed by the Trump administration on the ICC Prosecutor, Fatou Bensouda, and a top deputy over plans to investigate war crimes committed by US personnel in Afghanistan as well as crimes committed by Israel against the Palestinians.

In June 2020, Trump issued an executive order authorizing the imposition of economic sanctions against any ICC officials participating in the investigation of "allied personnel without that ally's consent."

Sweden Axes Bill Gates-funded Harvard Experiment Aiming To Dim the Sun To Fight Climate Change Amid Outcry From Activists

Sweden’s space agency has called off a geoengineering experiment to determine whether blotting out the sun with aerosols could reverse global warming. Funded by Bill Gates, the project stoked fierce opposition from eco groups.

Proposed by researchers at Harvard University, the Stratospheric Controlled Perturbation Experiment, or SCoPEx, ultimately planned to release a cloud of calcium carbonate – more commonly known as chalk dust – into the atmosphere from a high-altitude balloon to study its effects on sunlight reaching Earth. The project proved too controversial, however, and on Wednesday the Swedish Space Corporation (SSC) said that a test flight set for June would not move forward.

“The scientific community is divided regarding geoengineering, including any related technology tests such as the planned technical balloon test flight from Esrange this summer,” the SSC said in a statement on Wednesday.

SSC has had dialogues this spring with both leading experts on geoengineering and with other stakeholders, as well as with the SCoPEx Advisory Board. As a result of these dialogues and in agreement with Harvard, SSC has decided not to conduct the technical test flight planned for this summer.

Asked at a 2010 TED talk about what “emergency measures” mankind could implement to fight climate change should all else fail, Gates suggested solar geoengineering could be an “insurance policy.”

“There is a line of research on what’s called geoengineering, which are various techniques that would delay the heating to buy us 20 or 30 years to get our act together. Now that’s just an insurance policy, you hope that you don’t need to do that,” he said, adding that the idea might be “kept in the back pocket.”

Keith, a professor of applied physics at the Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, told Reuters the SSC’s decision to scrap the experiment was “a setback,” but noted that the project could move to the US if the troubles continue in Europe. Until then, the researchers say they will continue to lobby for SCoPEx in Sweden, hoping to generate public interest and support.

The experiment could find traction in the States, as a report published last week by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine called on the government to devote between $100 million and $200 million to solar geoengineering projects, including technology to dim out the Sun, over the next five years.

This is a $13 million tunnel boring machine (TBM) used for tunneling at the Nevada Test Site. (Remember that Area 51 is part of the test site.) Many other types of TBMs are used by many government agencies, including the 'nuclear powered TBM' [NTBM] that melts solid rock and leaves behind glass-like walls.

Most tunneling activity is under military installations and all information is highly restricted. Former employees of said facilities have surfaced over the years to talk of massive underground installations in places like Area 51, the Northrop facility in Antelope Valley, California (rumored to have 42 levels), and the Lockheed installation near Edwards, California.

The 'Black Budget' currently consumes $1.25 trillion per year. At least this amount is used in black programs, like those concerned with deep underground military bases. Presently, there are 129 deep underground military bases in the United States. They have been building these 129 bases day and night, unceasingly, since the early 1940's. Some of them were built even earlier than that. These bases are basically large cities underground connected by high-speed magneto-leviton trains that have speeds up to Mach 2. Several books have been written about this activity.

The average depth of these bases is over a mile, and they again are basically whole cities underground. They all are between 2.66 and 4.25 cubic miles in size. They have laser-drilling machines that can drill a tunnel seven miles long in one day. I was involved in building an addition to the deep underground military base at Dulce, which is probably the deepest base. It goes down seven levels and over 2.5 miles deep. I helped hollow out more than 13 deep underground military bases in the United States.

Suez Canal blockage: Captain of Ever Given not aiding probe; calamity's cost tops $1B

The cost of blocking shipping for almost a week through one of the most crucial waterways on earth apparently comes in at right around $1 billion.

And that's just the bill Egypt could soon be trying to collect. It does not include damages for the owners of more than 400 boats delayed by the calamity on the Suez Canal, nor compensation that could be sought by companies whose materials or products were on those boats.

Lt. Gen. Ossama Rabei, head of Suez Canal Authority, told Egypt's Sada ElBalad news that Egypt will likely seek $1 billion in compensation for physical and financial damages resulting from the grounding of the massive cargo ship Ever Given. Rabei said the compensation would cover losses from transit fees, the cost of six days of dredging and tugboat activity – and damage to the canal from the dredging.

“This is the right of the country," Rabie said. "It should get its due."

Rabei said the ship's captain has yet to respond to several demands by the canal authority, including surrender of the black box and documents sought for the investigation.

Grounded cargo ship Ever Given freed in Suez Canal: 'We pulled it off!'

Ever Given will not be allowed to continue on it journey to the Dutch city of Rotterdam until the probe is completed, Rabei added.

The Panamanian-flagged, Japanese-owned, Taiwanese-operated ship became caught in high winds and a sandstorm as it navigated a narrow stretch of the canal March 23. The 1,300-foot-long, 220,000-ton ship's bow went aground on the canal's eastern bank, the stern on the western bank.

Workers dredged 30,000 cubic meters of sand – enough to fill about a dozen Olympic-size swimming pools – before more than a dozen tugboats finally wrenched the ship free Monday.

Dislodging the Ever Given was a moment of triumph and pride for the salvage team and the nation. The workers danced, hugged and wept. President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi lauded his countrymen, saying they "succeeded in ending the crisis of the delinquent ship in the Suez Canal despite the tremendous technical complexity that surrounded this process from every side."

“We saw it on television, and it is completely different than when you see it in front of you,” said Mostafa Mohamed, one of the workers.

Aly Awamy, a mechanic on the a dredger, told NBC News the work was dangerous.

“The most difficult thing was the fear,” he said. “We were working under something the size of a 10-story building that could have fallen on us.”

Rabei said the investigation will try to determine what part, if any, human error or mechanical failure played in the incident, which halted more than 400 ships and closed the canal for six days.

'Rush to judgment'?: Suez Canal calamity fuels support for Ever Given crew

Sayed Sheisha, a canal authority consultant, told Egypt's Extra News the authority's investigation will determine whether the ship's captain followed the instructions of the Suez Canal guide. He said the ship has been involved in two previous accidents but provided no details.

Sheisha said that if the captain and others don't cooperate, the ship will be temporarily confiscated and a civil lawsuit filed that could drag on for years.

Sheisha, however, speculated that a solution such as agreeing on compensations could be reached within days. The fate of the ship's 25-person Indian crew had not been determined.

The ship's owner, Japan's Shoei Kisen Kaisha Ltd., has said it will aid in the investigation. Taiwan’s Evergreen Marine Corp., which operates the ship, said it’s not responsible for cargo delays.

The canal carries more than 10% of world trade, and the global cost of the closure was estimated at up to $10 billion a day.

Egypt is disinclined to have a similar accident occur again. Rabei told Egypt Today the canal will be upgraded to allow 95 ships through per day. The canal currently handles about 50 ships daily. More waiting areas outside the canal and observation points inside will also be added, and the fleet of support boats will be enlarged, he said.

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia — Normalization with Israel would bring “tremendous benefit” to the region, the Saudi foreign minister has said, but such an accord with the kingdom would depend on progress in the Israeli-Palestinian peace process.

Under the Abraham Accords brokered by former US president Donald Trump last year, four Arab countries — the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Morocco and Sudan — agreed to normalize ties with the Jewish state.

But Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan said Thursday that any deal with Saudi Arabia was “very much dependent on progress with the peace process.”

He noted that normalization had been on the table since the introduction of the 2002 Arab Peace Initiative on the condition of reaching resolution with the Palestinians.

“I think normalizing Israel’s status within the region would bring tremendous benefit to the region as a whole,” he said during an interview with CNN.

“It would be extremely helpful both economically but also socially and from a security perspective.”

Gulf powerhouse Saudi Arabia has repeatedly affirmed its decades-old policy of not establishing formal ties with Israel until a deal is reached to resolve the conflict with the Palestinians.

But mutual concern over Iran has gradually brought Israel and Gulf countries closer, and Riyadh has quietly been building relations with the Jewish state for several years.

Reports in November that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu held secret talks in Saudi Arabia with the crown prince fueled speculation that a normalization accord with the Gulf’s top power could be in the making.

Fort Sill Army Trainers Suspended Amid Allegations of Trainee's Sexual Assault

Several training cadre members at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, were suspended this week following allegations they sexually assaulted a trainee.

Maj. Gen. Ken Kamper, commanding general of the Fires Center of Excellence and Fort Sill, told reporters at a press conference Thursday that an investigation was immediately launched after the accusations were made, and the cadre members were swiftly suspended.

The incident was initially reported by the Lawton Constitution, an Oklahoma newspaper.

"A soldier assigned to Fort Sill reported she was a victim of sexual assault by Fort Sill cadre members," Kamper said. "This information was immediately reported to law enforcement and [Army Criminal Investigation Command]. They conducted their initial interviews that very day and continued every day since."

Kamper declined to specify how many cadre members had been suspended or when the alleged sexual assault took place. The alleged victim, who was not hospitalized, filed a report Saturday.

"This soldier that came forward is absolutely safe," he added. "She had a special victim's counsel and access to all services. We're proud of the courage she displayed coming forward with these allegations. We will stay connected with this soldier and her family."

It is unclear whether this was an isolated incident or if there are more potential victims. Details on the alleged victim and those who were suspended, including names and ranks, are being withheld during the investigation.

"We want to know more; we will investigate anything else that emerges. We have the resources and the full support of Army senior leaders," Kamper said.

A press conference immediately following allegations of a sexual crime is rare. But the military is facing a reckoning with widespread sexual assault and harassment in the ranks and how transparent and effective the force has been with investigations.

After Spc. Vanessa Guillen's bludgeoning murder last year at Fort Hood, Texas, an Army investigation found both male and female soldiers described a culture of sexual harassment and bullying that was pervasive and ignored by leadership.

Guillen's death became a flash point for the military's poor handling of sexual crime investigations and leadership ignoring the concerns and allegations of women in the ranks. At least 14 Army officials were fired or suspended in the aftermath. Since then, Congress has held multiple hearings on the troubling issues at Fort Hood and sexual assault in the military as a whole.

US Affirms ‘Unwavering Support’ for Ukraine Amid Russia Tensions

Ukraine accused Russia of massing troops near its border, the Kremlin said it is normal troop movement and is not a threat

Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin spoke with his Ukrainian counterpart on Thursday and expressed Washington’s “unwavering” support for Kyiv amid tensions with Russia.

According to a readout of the call, Austin “reaffirmed unwavering US support for Ukraine’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and Euro-Atlantic aspirations.” He also condemned what he called “Russian aggression.” Secretary of State Antony Blinken also spoke with his Ukrainian counterpart this week and made similar comments.

Ukraine has accused Moscow of stoking tensions by massing troops near Russia’s border with Ukraine. But Russia denies the troop movements are meant to be threatening. “The Russian Federation transfers the Armed Forces on its soil as it wants to,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Thursday, according to Russia’s TASS News Agency. “This should not concern anyone and this is not posing any threat to anyone.”

Moscow also warned Kyiv against restarting fighting in Ukraine’s eastern Donbas region, where a ceasefire agreed to last year has held relatively well, although there have been recent violations. In one incident, four Ukrainian soldiers died, which Ukraine is blaming on Russia, although Moscow denies having troops in Donbas.

The fighting in Donbas was sparked by the 2014 US-backed coup in Kyiv. Separatists in Donbas rejected the post-coup government. Since then, the US has provided Ukraine with more than $2 billion in military aid. The Pentagon recently announced a new $125 million package for Ukraine that includes armed patrol boats.

Peskov also mentioned the increased NATO activity near Russia. “There is increased activity on the perimeter of Russia’s borders by NATO, other alliances, individual countries — it all obliges us to be vigilant,” he said. Ukraine is planning to build new military bases on the Black Sea with the help of NATO.

US Senator Chris Murphy and Rep. Ro Khanna, both Democrats, addressed the stalemate between the US and Iran regarding the return to the 2015 nuclear agreement and urged the administration “to be open and willing to take early steps back into the deal.”

Speaking on Wednesday on a webinar hosted by the National Iranian American Council (NIAC), Murphy said that he is writing a letter with Senator Tim Kaine that would “make clear that there is a sizable constituency in the United States Senate for this “compliance for compliance” approach.”

Murphy said that Trump listened to the advice of those who opposed the JCPOA. “He put to the Iranians a list of 12 demands that included their nuclear program, their [ballistic] missile program; support for Hamas,” said Murphy.

“And he waited and waited and waited. Not only did Iran not come to the table on any of the 12 issues listed by the Trump administration, but they restarted their nuclear research program.”

Under the JCPOA, he said, the Iranians went from a breakout time to producing a nuclear weapon of over 12 months to three to four months. They also did not halt efforts to supporting destabilizing the region.

“Maximum pressure was a miserable 100% failure,” Murphy said. “And so as we get ready to reenter the JCPOA, it’s important to remind the opponents of the agreements that their arguments have been tested. Their argument has failed. Now is the work […] to get back into the agreement as quickly as possible.

“The United States was the first to leave, and so the United States shouldn’t be wary of taking the first step back into the agreement. There is no weakness in the United States admitting that, but for our non-compliance, the JCPOA would still likely be alive and well today. And so both in private and in public, I have counseled the administration to adopt a compliance for compliance approach, to be open and willing to take early steps back into the deal.”

Were the US to do so, Murphy said, and the Iranians not reciprocate, “we would be in a much better position then to take action in a multilateral way with the P5+1. If we were to be able to show the P5+1 that we were willing to get back into the deal, but it was only the Iranian hostility to it that stopped the JCPOA from restarting, we would be on much better multilateral footing. We want to make it clear that the clock is ticking; we don’t have the luxury of time.”

Biden’s Infrastructure Plan Could Boost Pelosi’s Investment Portfolio

President Joe Biden's $2 trillion infrastructure plan includes a provision to boost electric vehicle use—which House speaker Nancy Pelosi (D., Calif.) stands to personally benefit from.

Pelosi's husband Paul purchased between $500,000 and $1 million in Tesla investments in December. Biden's infrastructure plan will lead to a windfall for Tesla and its shareholders. On Wednesday, Biden unveiled his sweeping plan, which sets aside $174 billion for electric vehicle subsidies, charging stations, and other provisions designed to push more Americans into electric cars over a decade.

Democrats are anticipating a contentious and lengthy battle over the infrastructure package. With a narrow Democratic majority and no support from Republicans, Pelosi will need to marshal every vote she can to get the bill passed. It will fall on the Speaker to unify progressives who worry the bill is inadequate with moderate Democrats who worry the bill's tax hikes could imperil their reelection chances.

Pelosi is one of the richest members of Congress, with a net worth valued around $115 million. Congressional spouses can legally invest in companies their spouses help regulate, as long as they don’t act on private information. Her husband's Tesla investments include 25 call options at a strike price of $500 until March 2022. Call options are contracts that give the investor the right to buy shares of a company at a certain price—in this case $500—until the contract expires.

Tesla is now positioned to see a sizable boost under Biden's proposed infrastructure plan. Barron's says Tesla could be one of the big winners from Biden's infrastructure plan. Wall Street expects Tesla deliveries to rise 60 percent year over year in 2021, according to the publication.

Republicans say the timing of Paul Pelosi's investments is suspect. "There's a reason Nancy Pelosi is one of the most disliked politicians in America—she's corrupt," said Torunn Sinclair, national press secretary for the National Republican Congressional Committee. "This is yet another example of Nancy Pelosi using her power to tax the middle class and personally profit from it."

Senate minority leader Mitch McConnell (R., Ky.) said the GOP will oppose Biden's infrastructure plan. "I'm going to fight [the Democrats] every step of the way, because I think this is the wrong prescription for America," McConnell said. If Democrats do not gain the support of 10 Republican senators, they will have to use budget reconciliation to pass the bill on their own.

The left wing of the Democratic Party doesn't think Biden's plan goes far enough. Progressive lawmakers and environmental activists pushed Biden to include a $10 trillion climate package within the plan.

Pelosi's office did not respond to a request for comment.

Judicial Watch Obtains Additional Records of FDA Purchases of Fetal Tissue for “Humanized Mice” Project; Agency Wanted “Fresh, Shipped on Wet Ice” Fetal Organs

Judicial Watch announced that it received an additional 575 pages of records from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) showing the agency spent tens of thousands of taxpayer dollars to buy human fetal tissue from California-based Advanced Bioscience Resources (ABR). The tissue was used in creating “humanized mice” to test “biologic drug products.”

ABR, a nonprofit, human fetal tissue “procurement” firm, has been the subject of criminal referrals from both U.S. House and Senate committees investigating human fetal tissue trafficking and whether Planned Parenthood or any other entity was illegally profiting from transfers of organs harvested from aborted human fetuses. Federal law regulates the purchase and acceptance of human fetal tissue for research purposes. It is unlawful to “acquire, receive, or otherwise transfer any human fetal tissue for valuable consideration if the transfer affects interstate commerce.”

The records include the following communications between ABR procurement manager Perrin Larton and FDA research veterinary medical official Dr. Kristina Howard between January 2011 and April 2018:

Howard’s September 27, 2012 application sent to Larton indicating that ABR would be paid $12,000 up front for “tissue purchases.” The contract provided for the provision of human fetal tissue with a gestational age of 16 to 24 weeks, including “One set of tissue (thymus/liver) approx. twice monthly.” It was to be shipped “Fresh; shipped on wet ice.”

Howard’s May 10, 2012, email to Larton bearing the subject line “Tissue Delivery” and saying, “Just wanted to follow up with you regarding the tissue deliveries. We have three batches of mice that still need to be humanized, so please keep us on the schedule every week until we manage to receive three sets of tissue.”

Howard’s October 17, 2012 email to Larton about the gender of an aborted fetus from which an organ was harvested: “I wanted to check with your records on the sex of the tissue we received today. It was Liver #4505.” Larton responded, “The techs were not able to identify the gender. We only check external genitalia and if it’s not there … due to the nature of the termination procedure… we have no way of telling.” Howard replied, “Thank you for explaining that to me. I have some leftover cells to sex it.”
