You can always point to previous studies of Sars/Mers in animals and I believe RSV tests done on kids back in the 60s(similar to corona type infection). Vax appears to work at first based on immune response, but introduction of wild virus to test subjects vaccinated led to bad outcomes for those having received the vax.
