The reason why Q started on a clone of a Japanese anime forum might have something to do with why a number of us are fans of anime. That and the fact that it's quite popular among the enlisted.
Why?
Because there is more reality in anime than there is in the news. Even outwardly goofy shows like the Index/Railgun series are very real in their depiction of society and bureaucracy. There are always gears within fears, motives moving in multiple directions… The villains end up being people driven to madness by the truth, or in some cases the villains were just the heroes and 'you' were the mook.
It's just better storytelling - and the artwork is stylized after lessons from disney's animation studios in making cute or appealing things.
The west can do it… And often does, but you can't publish good things in the west. You have to publish somewhere else and let the internet do its thing.
