It was a family affair at the Unmask Our Children protest that occurred in Maple Ridge, B.C. this past weekend.

A group of around 40 parents, kids, and even teachers gathered to raise their concerns about children being forced to wear masks in order to receive an education.

“The last straw was when they started making these kids wear masks in gym,” said Sirene Railton, who co-organized the peaceful rally along with Cole Wilson.

Despite the World Health Organization stating that masks should not be worn during vigorous intensity physical activity, and studies supporting that children are not the “super-spreaders” we were initially led to believe they were, some schools are still allowing children to feel that they have no choice but to wear a mask in school.

Watch as I interview some of the speakers at the rally, including a young boy who said he is treated poorly by his teacher for not wearing a mask at school.

Rukshan Fernando is an independent journalist whose frontline reports from the four Melbourne lockdowns have been widely viewed.

So much so that Victoria Police feel threatened by his work.

Three officers were sent to Mr Fernando's home to hand-deliver a warning to the journalist not to attend Saturday's lockdown protest.

The letter addressed to Mr Fernando was personally signed by Assistant Commissioner Luke Cornelius.

Feds: No defunding talks with Halifax Security Forum over Taiwan prize

The Department of National Defence denies bringing up any discussion of funding the Halifax Security Forum during four communications which took place during one week — all on the topic of Taiwan's participation.

The four communications, which took place between November 9–16, 2020, were recorded as discussions concerning “the nature of participation of Taiwanese officials in the Forum” and the plan to award the John McCain Prize for Leadership to Taiwan's President Tsai Ing-wen.

Last year's Security Forum took place on November 20–22, 2020.

Earlier this year, the Globe and Mail reported on a rumour that the Canadian government warned the forum's organizers that they would pull funding if they awarded the McCain prize to Tsai.

Conservative MP Warren Steinley (Regina—Lewvan) requested information on the rumor in an order paper question, and finally received a response from National Defence last week.

Here's what Steinley requested:

With regard to the report that the government threatened to pull funding from the Halifax International Security Forum (HFX) if they awarded Tsai Ing-wen, the president of Taiwan with the John McCain Prize for Leadership in Public Service:

(a) what are the details of all communications, formal or informal, between the government, including any ministers or exempt staff, and representatives of the HFX, and where there was any reference to Taiwan since January 1, 2020, including the (i) date, (ii) individuals participating in the communication, (iii) the senders and recipients, if applicable, (iv) type of communication, (email, text message, conversation, etc.), (v) summary of topics discussed; and

(b) which of the communications in (a) gave the impression to HFX that its funding would be pulled if it awarded the prize to the president of Taiwan, and (i) has the individual who made the representation been reprimanded by the government, (ii) was that individual acting on orders or advice, either formal or informal, from superiors within the government, and, if so, who were the superiors providing the orders or advice?

The response indicates that all four communications with the Forum concerning Taiwan took place just before the event.

National Defence conducted a search of internal records for communications between the Deputy Minister and Assistant Deputy Minister (Policy), and representatives of HISF between January 1, 2020, and April 14, 2021, and found a total of 4 communications where there was a reference to Taiwan.

Funding was not discussed during any of these communications. Further details on these communications are provided in the enclosed table.

Edmonton city councillor claims cancel culture “is not a real thing”

Edmonton City Councillor Andrew Knack tweeted on Tuesday that cancel culture “isn’t a real thing” and went on to claim that those who are deplatformed or censored are only being held accountable.

“Cancel culture isn’t a real thing. It’s called being held accountable for your actions,” tweeted Knack.

“And if we are being honest, those who committed the atrocities of the past aren’t really able to be held accountable now. Removing a statue, plaque, sign, etc. does not erase history. It just means we won’t celebrate those who did terrible things with public infrastructure.”

According to Knack, tainted historical figures belong in history books instead of in public areas on pedestals.

“It is possible to still learn about the good things a person did in the past while clearly detailing the bad things they did. That can happen without relying on something like a statue or a name on a sign. As an example, we could read about those things in a textbook,” tweeted Knack.

Cancel culture or “call out culture” as it’s sometimes called has been the topic of numerous books and talks by academics like Jonathan Haidt and Dr. Jordan B Peterson.

True North reached out to Knack for clarification but did receive a response by the time this article was published.

This week, Alberta Premier Jason Kenney issued a stern warning against attacks on controversial historical figures like Canada’s first prime minister John A. Macdonald.

“I think Canada is worth celebrating. I think Canada is a great historical achievement. It is a country that people all around the world seek to join as new Canadians. It is an imperfect country but it is still a great country, just as John Macdonald was an imperfect man, but was still a great leader,” he said.

“So if we go full-force into cancel culture, then we’re cancelling most if not all of our history. Instead, I think we should learn from our history. We should learn from our achievements but also our failures.”

Kenney made the statements only days after the apparent doscovery of 215 human remains believed to belong to children at a former Kamloops Indian Residential School.

Since the remains were discovered, at least one statue of Macdonald was removed from a public display in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island.

Trudeau government gave author Margaret Atwood $10,000 for Australian book tour

The federal government gave author Margaret Atwood nearly $10,000 to promote her new book in Australia.

According to records obtained by the Canadian Taxpayer Federation (CTF), Atwood received around $10,000 from the Department of Global Affairs’ Mission Cultural Fund to encourage sales of her most recent book in 2020.

“Atwood is a best-selling author and her books are the basis for major Hollywood productions, so why are the feds giving her tax dollars to promote her own book?” asked CTF Federal Director Franco Terrazzano.

“It seems like Ottawa bureaucrats have too much money if they think giving a celebrity author $10,000 to promote a book is a good way to spend tax dollars.”

In a statement to the CTF, Global Affairs said Atwood’s tour “attracted high profile guests including government, academic, environmental and business leaders” and gave the consulate in Sydney the opportunity to promote Canada’s interests.”

Atwood is one of Canada’s most successful living authors, with an estimate worth in the millions.

The funding for Atwood came from the Department of Global Affairs’ Mission Cultural Fund. According to then-mission support bureau director general Stuart Savage, the fund was created to promote Canadian culture works abroad in ways that also support Canada’s international policy goals.

In 2017, musician Bryan Adams received $52,000 to put on a photo exhibit of his work, featuring pictures of figures such as Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Joni Mitchell and Wayne Gretzky.

In another instance, a Canadian artist known as “Peaches” recevied $8,813.70 to put on an art exhibit in Germany consisting of sculptures of sex toys.

“This is just one of many examples of the Mission Cultural Fund blowing thousands of our tax dollars,” Terrazzano said.

“Prime Minister Justin Trudeau needs to put this fund under a microscope and stop these bureaucrats from wasting more of our money.”

Saudi And Russian Oil Producers Benefit From "Climate Activism" Lobbed At Western Producers

Believe it or not, oil companies in Russia and Saudi Arabia are cheering on climate activists who are doing battle with names like Shell and Exxon.

That's because wins in the courtroom for activists against Shell, Chevron and Exxon have been a tailwind for Saudi Aramco, Abu Dhabi National Oil Co and Gazprom. The pressure for U.S. names to cut carbon emissions faster pushes more business to companies in Saudi Arabia and Russia, and to OPEC, Reuters reports.

Among the recent wins was a Dutch court ruling that required Shell to "drastically cut emissions". Exxon and Chevron also both activist battles with shareholders who have accused the giants of not being proactive enough in addressing climate change.

Amrita Sen from consultancy Energy Aspects said: “Oil and gas demand is far from peaking and supplies will be needed, but international oil companies will not be allowed to invest in this environment, meaning national oil companies have to step in.”

The Saudis, meanwhile, don't seem quite as alarmed by the issue of climate change. When The International Energy Agency issued guidance last month to scrap all new oil and gas developments, Saudi Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman responded by stating:

"It (the IEA report) is a sequel of the La La Land movie. Why should I take it seriously? We (Saudi Arabia) are … producing oil and gas at low cost and producing renewables. I urge the world to accept this as a reality: that we’re going to be winners of all of these activities."

A spokesperson from Gazprom jabbed: "It looks like the West will have to rely more on what it calls 'hostile regimes' for its supply".

"Western oil majors like Shell have dramatically expanded in the last 50 years" as a result of the West trying to cut reliance on Middle Eastern and Russian oil, Reuters notes. Now these producers must balance a growing chorus of criticisms about climate change with continued output.

Nick Stansbury at Legal & General, which manages $1.8 trillion, said: "It is vital that the global oil industry aligns its production to the Paris goals. But that must be done in step with policy, changes to the demand side, and the rebuilding of the world’s energy system. Forcing one company to do so in the courts may (if it is effective at all) only result in higher prices and foregone profits."

While Saudi Arabia claims to have targets to cut carbon emissions, it isn't beholden to U.N.-backed targets or activist investors like Western companies are. Gazprom has indicated a shift to natural gas to try and manage its carbon emissions.

Western names account for about 15% of all output globally, while Russia and OPEC make up about 40%. At the same time, global oil consumption has risen to 100 million barrels per day from 65 million barrels per day in 1990.

“The same oil and gas will still be produced. Just with lower ESG standards,” one Middle Eastern oil executive concluded.
