You must have been rich. In my family, when I was a kid in the 60s & 70s, we never went to the doctor just because we were sick. We went for those mandatory school physicals and shots and that's it.
The only time I ever saw a doctor outside of that is when I broke my jaw falling off of my bicycle.

My grandma had 4 kids.
First 3 in her first 3 years of marriage, 1922, 1923, and in 1924 she had my mom (guess she hadn't figured out the rhythm method yet)
She had all of them at home.
Then 12 yrs. later she got pregnant again and her doctor said she had to go the hospital to have her baby.
My grandma thought that was the most ridiculous thing she ever heard. Why on earth would a woman go to a hospital to have a baby? But she did it, because the doctor said so. So my aunt was the only one in her family to be born at a hospital. That would have been around 1936, in the middle of The Depression.
Good old barter system.
