General Michael Flynn is one of the most controversial political figures in the United States.

He achieved a distinguished career in the United States Army and is an active member of the QAnon movement.

Now, the University of Rhode Island is mired in a secret process to consider the repeal of an honorary degree bestowed to Flynn in 2014. The degree was given to the Middletown native and a graduate of URI just four years before he was named National Security Advisor by then-President Donald Trump.

URI's Secret Meetings

Outgoing URI President David Dooley and the Board of the University are expected to make a decision on the fate of Flynn's degree in June.

A decision to repeal the degree will spark charges of URI succumbing to "cancel culture." On the flip side, does URI want the association with an extreme QAnon leader?

The consideration of the degree has been going on for months by a URI committee — the Honorary Degree Committee — whose meetings are not publicly advertised and are held in secret. Despite being a state university, URI officials defend the meetings being held without public notification or open to the public.

The committee is comprised almost exclusively of URI officials and students except for one outside member, former Providence Journal Editor Carol Young. Young told GoLocal, “The committee I am on is purely advisory in nature. We review all nominations for honorary degrees in any given year, narrow down the field to a half-dozen or so, and the list is forwarded to the President's office by the committee chair. Then, if I understand this right, the President makes recommendations to the governing board which actually makes the final decisions. BTW. I [am] not an alumna of URI, I am there as a ‘community representative.’”

“As it relates to the confidentiality of the honorary degree nomination and selection process and the consideration of rescinding a degree, the University believes that it would be subject to a balancing test according to the RI Access to Public Records Act. The University believes the privacy interests of the individuals nominated outweigh disclosure to the public until the honorary degree nomination, and selection process is final,” claimed Kelly K. Mahoney, the former executive director, external relations and communications at URI.

Mahoney recently quit her position at URI to join Deloitte, the state of Rhode Island’s contractor who built the UHIP data system — a system that had hundreds of millions of dollars of cost overruns.

Flynn’s Recent Controversy

Flynn appeared this weekend at a Texas political event where he appeared to suggest that a Myanmar-like military coup "should" happen in the United States.

Flynn made the remarks during a Q&A session at a conference called the "For God & Country Patriot Roundup" in Dallas, Texas on Sunday night.

"I want to know why what happened in Myanmar can't happen here?" one attendee asked, prompting loud applause from the crowd.

"No reason. I mean, it should happen here," Flynn said, to cheers from the crowd as well

The deadly coup in Myanmar has garnered international attention.

He later issued a statement.

Flynn denied suggesting a Myanmar-style military coup should happen in the US, reported Business Insider on Monday afternoon.

"Let me be VERY CLEAR – There is NO reason whatsoever for any coup in America, and I do not and have not at any time called for any action of that sort," Flynn said in a post on Telegram, a social-media app that has been favored by far-right groups.

In December, after President Joe Biden had won the election, Flynn said that Trump could use the military in key states to “re-run” the election.

“There is no way in the world we are going to be able to move forward as a nation. He could immediately, on his order, seize every single one of these [voting] machines, on his order,” Flynn said, citing Trumpworld’s unhinged conspiracy theory that voting software flipped Trump votes to Biden.

“He could order the, within the swing states, if he wanted to, he could take military capabilities, and he could place those in states and basically rerun an election in each of those states,” he continued, adding: “I mean, it’s not unprecedented. These people are out there talking about martial law like it’s something that we’ve never done. Martial law has been instituted 64 times.”

Rhodes writes in his new book that Obama, 59, made the comparison between Simpson and Trump, 74, out of a place of "dark humor."

"Trump was a lightning rod," Rhodes writes. "But focusing on him avoided plumbing the depths underneath, the currents that shaped our country. Obama's frustration was more likely to come out indark humor."

The phone records of four reporters for The New York Times were secretly seized by the Justice Department under then-President Donald Trump, the newspaper is reporting.

The Times attributed the information to the Biden administration and said the records spanned nearly four months in 2017 and were part of a leak investigation.

The Justice Department said the phone records of reporters Matt Apuzzo, Adam Goldman, Eric Lichtblau, and Michael S. Schmidt were seized.

Dean Baquet, the executive editor of the Times, condemned the Trump administration for the action regarding the reporters.

"Seizing the phone records of journalists profoundly undermines press freedom," he said in a statement. "It threatens to silence the sources we depend on to provide the public with essential information about what the government is doing."

CNN had reported in May that the Trump administration secretly sought and obtained 2017 phone and email records of the news network’s Pentagon correspondent Barbara Starr as part of a leak investigation.

And The Washington Post reported on May 7 that the Trump Justice Department obtained the phone records from two current reporters and one former journalist from the paper for a period in 2017.

After the disclosures of the CNN and Post seizures, President Joe Biden said he would not allow the justice department to take such steps against reporters.

And Baquet noted the Biden vow, saying: "President Biden has said this sort of interference with a free press will not be tolerated in his administration. We expect the Department of Justice to explain why this action was taken and what steps are being taken to make certain it does not happen again in the future."

The records from the Times’ journalists were reportedly obtained in 2020.

Anthony Coley, a Justice Department spokesman, said that "members of the news media have now been notified in every instance" of leak investigations from the 2019-2020 period in which their records were sought.

The Justice Department did not detail which article was being investigated, according to the Times.

The newspaper speculated that the leak probe related to classified information reported in an April 22, 2017, article the four Times journalists wrote about how James Comey, then the FBI director, handled politically charged investigations during the 2016 presidential election.

The Hill noted that Sen. Ron Wyden D-Ore. and Rep. Jamie Raskin D-Md. Have urged Attorney General Merrick Garland to end the practice against reporters.

SAO PAULO (Reuters) - A court in Brazil ordered JBS SA, the world's largest meat processing company, to pay 1 million reais ($194,000) in damages over its failure to take measures to protect workers from a COVID-19 outbreak, according to a statement from labor prosecutors on Tuesday.

JBS declined to comment on the decision handed down by Judge Marcelo Silva Porto, saying it does not discuss ongoing lawsuits.

Porto's ruling also called for modifying work schedules to reduce the number of workers per shift at JBS' plant in the Ana Rech district of Caxias do Sul, where it processes poultry. Workers at that plant should also be provided with protective masks, individual lockers and should stay at least two meters apart, the ruling said, according to a statement from the labor prosecutors.

In the United States, the company has also faced claims that it failed to protect employees from the virus.

For example, in September 2020, the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) proposed $15,615 in penalties be imposed on JBS Foods Inc, after it found the company's plant in Greeley, Colorado, did not protect employees from exposure to the novel coronavirus.

Brazil's Ana Rech unit became the site of the first indoor outbreak of the coronavirus in Caxias do Sul, which led to the temporary shutdown of the plant in June 2020, the prosecutors said.

Mandatory testing of all employees was also carried out at the facility when the outbreak occurred, the statement noted. Of the 1,538 tests performed, 410 gave positive results.

JBS may appeal the ruling, prosecutors said.

(Reuters) -Former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin asked a judge on Wednesday for probation after being convicted for the murder of George Floyd, while the prosecution said his crime "shocked the Nation's conscience" and he should be imprisoned for 30 years.

In a motion filed with Hennepin County District Judge Peter Cahill, lawyer Eric Nelson said Chauvin's actions in pinning Floyd to the pavement during an arrest was "best described as an error made in good faith" based on his training.

"Mr. Chauvin asks the Court to look beyond its findings, to his background, his lack of criminal history, his amenability to probation, to the unusual facts of this case, and to his being a product of a 'broken' system," Nelson wrote.

The lawyer asked the judge for a so-called dispositional departure resulting in probation or a downward durational departure, which he said would lead to a sentence less strict than the 128 months to 180 months suggested by state guidelines.

In their own filing, prosecutors argued that Chauvin acted with cruelty, among other aggravating factors, and therefore deserved twice the upper limit of the sentencing range, or 30 years in prison.

"His actions traumatized the community, prompting an outpouring of grief and protest across Minneapolis and the State. And his actions shocked the conscience of the Nation," prosecutors in the Minnesota Attorney General's Office wrote.

A Minneapolis jury in April found Chauvin, 45, guilty of second- and third-degree murder and manslaughter after hearing three weeks of testimony in a highly publicized trial. He is scheduled to be sentenced on June 25.

He is being held at a maximum security prison in Oak Park Heights, Minnesota, while awaiting sentencing.

Last month, Cahill found that prosecutors had shown there were four aggravating factors in the death of Floyd, a 46-year-old Black man.

The judge said Chauvin, who is white, abused his position of trust and authority and treated Floyd with particular cruelty. He committed the crime as part of a group with three other officers and did so with children present, Cahill ruled.

Floyd's May 25, 2020, death - after he was handcuffed on a Minneapolis street with Chauvin's knee on his neck for more than nine minutes - prompted massive protests against racism and police brutality in many U.S. cities and other countries.
