From royal insider to target: How the Arab Spring propelled Jamal Khashoggi into the Saudi leadership's crosshairs
There are few more feared destinations in Cairo than Tora Prison — a notorious complex where hundreds of political prisoners have been jailed, often subjected to unspeakable torture.
But one day in 2008, one of the prison’s most celebrated inmates, democracy advocate Ayman Nour, figured out a way to hoodwink his jailers — and ultimately get himself freed. How did he do so? A clever ruse that Nour concocted with the active collaboration of a visitor from Saudi Arabia, Jamal Khashoggi.
Khashoggi’s role in helping Nour outsmart the jailers of Tora Prison is told for the first time in “A Revolution Crushed,” Episode 4 in the latest season of Yahoo News’ "Conspiracyland" podcast, “The Secret Lives and Brutal Death of Jamal Khashoggi.” It is a story that illustrates the Saudi journalist’s political transformation — and his penchant for inserting himself into the midst of events that rippled through the Middle East.
Khashoggi had once been a friend of Osama bin Laden, championing his battles in Afghanistan against the Soviet occupiers. He later became a spin doctor for a harsh antidemocratic Saudi monarchy and was sometimes assigned to what one former colleague called “secret missions” to collect intelligence.
But in the years after the Sept. 11 terror attacks, Khashoggi’s views began to evolve as he became an increasingly outspoken supporter of democracy and freedom of speech.
That led him to visit Nour — a dissident whose case was so well known that multiple U.S. officials, including President George W. Bush, had publicly called for his release.
But getting in to see him wasn’t easy. Journalists were barred from Tora Prison. So Khashoggi listed himself as a relative of the prisoner’s wife.
Then, under the watchful eyes of the jailers, sitting across from each other at a table in the warden’s conference room, Khashoggi and Nour implemented their scheme.
Khashoggi had brought with him a pack of cigarillos, or mini-cigars, that he plunked on the conference room table. Nour was ushered in and brought his own pack, placing it on the table as well, as he sat down across from Khashoggi. “When we stood up to leave, each took the other’s pack,” recalls Nour, now living in exile in Istanbul.
And inside Nour’s pack, which Khashoggi smuggled out of the prison, was an eloquent letter to Sen. Barack Obama, then a Democratic candidate for president.
Before long, the letter popped up on Obama’s Facebook page.
“Dear Senator Obama: These lines, which I'm not certain will see the light or reach you, were written behind the walls of an old prison in the south of Cairo,” the letter read. Nour explained why the charges against him by Hosni Mubarak’s government were a sham.
“The real charge is that I committed the crime of dreaming of change!” the letter continued. “Me and the generation I belong to — in Egypt and the Arab region — views you as a gifted and inspiring model for the dream of freedom. [I] look forward to hearing from you — today, tomorrow and in the future.”
The letter had an impact. In February 2009, just a few weeks after Obama’s inauguration, Nour was released from prison — a move that was widely interpreted as a gesture by Mubarak to the new American president.

Transgender runner CeCe Telfer unable to run Olympic trials due to eligibility rules
CeCe Telfer, the first openly transgender woman to win an NCAA title, will not be allowed to compete at the U.S. Olympic trials in the 400-meter hurdles because she did not meet the World Athletics eligibility regulations, the Associated Press reported.
Telfer entered the trials held in Eugene, Oregon, but was not allowed to compete based on the World Athletics guidelines released in 2019. The regulations require runners in international women's events between 400 meters and one mile to havetestosteronelevels below5 nonomolesper liter for a span of 12 months.
The regulations are associated with two-time Olympic gold medalist Caster Semenya, who has been fighting them for years.
Telfer initially competed on the men's team at Division II Franklin Pierce. She took time off and came back to compete for the women's team, winning the 400-meter NCAA title in 2019.
USATF also said in a statement it, "strongly supports inclusivity and providing a clear path to participation in the sport for all, while also maintaining competitive fairness.
“If CeCe meets the conditions for transgender athlete participation in the future, we wholeheartedly back her participation in international events as a member of Team USATF."
Anyone competing in the Olympic trials must meet requirements for the U.S. Olympic team, which has to follow regulations set by World Athletics.
Telfer was one of many openly transgender athletes attempting to compete at the Olympics. New Zealand weightlifter Laurel Hubbard was chosen by the country's Olympic Committee earlier this week, making her the first openly transgender athlete to compete at an Olympics. It has been met by criticism from competitors.

The First Cornerstone
The cornerstone was laid on Wednesday, September 18, 1793, during the first large public event staged in the federal city.
Contemporary Masonic practice included the laying of an inscribed metal plate along with a cornerstone. Caleb Bentley, a Quaker clockmaker and silversmith who lived in Georgetown not far from Suter's Fountain Inn, where the commissioners held their meetings, made the silver plate for the Capitol ceremony.
The newspaper invitation announcing the cornerstone ceremony was directed to the Masonic fraternity:
The Capitol is in progression—the southeast is yet kept vacant that [the] cornerstone is to be laid with the assistance of the brotherhood [on] the 18th Inst. Those of the craft however dispersed are requested to join the work. The solemnity is expected to equal the occasion.
The ceremony proceedings were reported in an article in The Columbia Mirror and Alexandria Gazette, which remains the only known eyewitness account of the event. Activities began at 10:00 a.m. with the appearance of President Washington and his entourage on the south bank of the Potomac River. Crossing the river with the president was a company of volunteer artillery from Alexandria. The procession joined Masonic lodges from Maryland and Virginia, and all marched two abreast, "with music playing, drums beating, colors flying, and spectators rejoicing," to the site of the Capitol about a mile and a half away. There the procession reformed and Washington, flanked by Joseph Clark (the Grand Master) and Dr. E. C. Dick (the master of the Virginia lodge), stood to the east of a "huge stone" while the others formed a circle west of it. Soon, the engraved plate was delivered and the inscription read:
This South East corner stone, of the Capitol of the United States of America in the City of Washington, was laid on the 18th day of September, in the thirteenth year of American Independence, in the first year of the second term of the Presidency of George Washington, whose virtues in the civil administration of his country have been as conspicuous and beneficial, as his Military valor and prudence have been useful in establishing her liberties, and in the year of Masonry 5793, by the Grand Lodge of Maryland, several lodges under its jurisdiction, and Lodge 22, from Alexandria, Virginia.

The United States has its roots in many Plutonian secrets. It’s well-documented that several of the Founding Fathers, including George Washington and Benjamin Franklin, were members of the Freemasons, a civic organization embedded in the construction of the nation and its cities and landmarks, many of which, like the Washington Monument obelisk, directly reflecting the architecture and spirit of ancient Egypt.
Some believe that Benjamin Franklin selected July 4, 1776, as the United States of America’s official birthdate (rather than July 2) to not only commemorate the ratification of the Declaration of Independence by John Hancock on July 4, but because of favorable planetary alignments on that day.
One of America’s preeminent astrologers, Franklin published his Poor Richard’s Almanack annually between 1732 -1758. It contained a detailed astrological ephemeris (calendar) that tracked monthly moon phases and motions of the known planets, along with predictions based on their astral interactions—the Colonial American equivalent of a daily horoscope.
Given Ben Franklin’s daily observation of the zodiac, doubtless he would have noted that on July 4, the transiting Sun would be at 13° Cancer, allowing him to commemorate each of the 13 original colonies with the 13 degrees of the sign of Cancer.
In his Almanack, Benjamin Franklin championed astrology and called to task those who denounced it:
“Courteous Reader: Astrology is one of the most ancient Sciences, had in high Esteem of old, by the Wise and Great. Formerly, no Prince would make War or Peace, nor any General fight a Battle, in short, no important Affair was taken without first consulting an Astrologer, who examined the Aspects and Configurations of the heavenly bodies, and mark’d the lucky hour. Now the noble Art (more Shame to the Age we live in!) is dwindled into contempt; the Great neglect us, Empires make Leagues, and Parliaments Laws, without advising with us; and scarce any other Use is made of our learned Labors.”
