(Greco and Tameleo had died in prison; their cases were posthumously dropped.)

From royal insider to target: How the Arab Spring propelled Jamal Khashoggi into the Saudi leadership's crosshairs

There are few more feared destinations in Cairo than Tora Prison — a notorious complex where hundreds of political prisoners have been jailed, often subjected to unspeakable torture.

But one day in 2008, one of the prison’s most celebrated inmates, democracy advocate Ayman Nour, figured out a way to hoodwink his jailers — and ultimately get himself freed. How did he do so? A clever ruse that Nour concocted with the active collaboration of a visitor from Saudi Arabia, Jamal Khashoggi.

Khashoggi’s role in helping Nour outsmart the jailers of Tora Prison is told for the first time in “A Revolution Crushed,” Episode 4 in the latest season of Yahoo News’ "Conspiracyland" podcast, “The Secret Lives and Brutal Death of Jamal Khashoggi.” It is a story that illustrates the Saudi journalist’s political transformation — and his penchant for inserting himself into the midst of events that rippled through the Middle East.

Khashoggi had once been a friend of Osama bin Laden, championing his battles in Afghanistan against the Soviet occupiers. He later became a spin doctor for a harsh antidemocratic Saudi monarchy and was sometimes assigned to what one former colleague called “secret missions” to collect intelligence.

But in the years after the Sept. 11 terror attacks, Khashoggi’s views began to evolve as he became an increasingly outspoken supporter of democracy and freedom of speech.

That led him to visit Nour — a dissident whose case was so well known that multiple U.S. officials, including President George W. Bush, had publicly called for his release.

But getting in to see him wasn’t easy. Journalists were barred from Tora Prison. So Khashoggi listed himself as a relative of the prisoner’s wife.

Then, under the watchful eyes of the jailers, sitting across from each other at a table in the warden’s conference room, Khashoggi and Nour implemented their scheme.

Khashoggi had brought with him a pack of cigarillos, or mini-cigars, that he plunked on the conference room table. Nour was ushered in and brought his own pack, placing it on the table as well, as he sat down across from Khashoggi. “When we stood up to leave, each took the other’s pack,” recalls Nour, now living in exile in Istanbul.

And inside Nour’s pack, which Khashoggi smuggled out of the prison, was an eloquent letter to Sen. Barack Obama, then a Democratic candidate for president.

Before long, the letter popped up on Obama’s Facebook page.

“Dear Senator Obama: These lines, which I'm not certain will see the light or reach you, were written behind the walls of an old prison in the south of Cairo,” the letter read. Nour explained why the charges against him by Hosni Mubarak’s government were a sham.

“The real charge is that I committed the crime of dreaming of change!” the letter continued. “Me and the generation I belong to — in Egypt and the Arab region — views you as a gifted and inspiring model for the dream of freedom. [I] look forward to hearing from you — today, tomorrow and in the future.”

The letter had an impact. In February 2009, just a few weeks after Obama’s inauguration, Nour was released from prison — a move that was widely interpreted as a gesture by Mubarak to the new American president.

New Federal Indictment Charges a Second Defendant for the 2015 Murder of a Woman and Her Seven-Year-Old Child During a Drug-Related Robbery

Baltimore, Maryland – A federal grand jury has returned a second superseding indictment that adds a new defendant, Kiara Haynes, age 36, of Baltimore, charging her with two counts of using a firearm in relation to a drug trafficking crime, causing the death of Jennifer Jeffrey and her seven-year-old child. The second superseding indictment also restates the previous charges against Andre Ricardo Briscoe, a/k/a Poo, age 37, of Baltimore and Cambridge, Maryland, for conspiracy to distribute heroin, possession with intent to distribute heroin, use of a firearm to commit murder in relation to the drug trafficking crimes, killing a witness to prevent communication with law enforcement, and being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition. The second superseding indictment was returned on June 23, 2021.

Haynes was arrested in Texas on June 18, 2021, on a related federal criminal complaint. She had an initial appearance on that charge and was detained pending her transport to Maryland. Briscoe remains in federal custody on his previous indictment and is expected to have an initial appearance on the new charges in U.S. District Court in Baltimore in the near future.

The second superseding indictment was announced by Acting United States Attorney for the District of Maryland Jonathan F. Lenzner; Special Agent in Charge Timothy Jones of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) Baltimore Field Division; Acting Special Agent in Charge Rachel Byrd of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Baltimore Field Office; Commissioner Michael Harrison of the Baltimore Police Department; and Chief Mark K. Lewis of the Cambridge Police Department.

Acting U.S. Attorney Jonathan F. Lenzner stated, “The murders of Jennifer Jeffrey and her child were a tragedy. The loss of any life is tragic, and never more so than a child. This indictment should make crystal clear that we will not stop investigating until we bring to justice everyone involved in a murder. If you touch a witness, especially a child, the full weight of federal law enforcement will be harnessed to hold you accountable and bring you to justice.”

According to the second superseding indictment, from March through October 2015, Briscoe conspired with others to distribute heroin. The second superseding indictment alleges that on May 27, 2015, Briscoe possessed with intent to distribute more than 100 grams of heroin. On that same day, in connection with Briscoe’s heroin distribution, the second superseding indictment alleges that Briscoe and Haynes committed an armed robbery and during the course of the robbery Jennifer Jeffrey and Jeffrey’s seven-year-old child were shot and killed. The second superseding indictment also alleges that Briscoe shot the child multiple times, including in the head and mouth, killing the child to prevent him/her from communicating with law enforcement.

If convicted of the murders, Briscoe and Haynes face a maximum sentence of death or life in prison. Briscoe also faces death or a mandatory sentence of life in prison if convicted of the witness tampering murder; a mandatory minimum of five years and a maximum of 20 years in federal prison for the conspiracy to distribute and for possession with the intent to distribute 100 grams or more of heroin; and a maximum of 10 years in prison for being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition. Actual sentences for federal crimes are typically less than the maximum penalties.

An indictment is not a finding of guilt. An individual charged by indictment is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty at some later criminal proceedings.

Acting United States Attorney Jonathan F. Lenzner commended the ATF, the FBI, the Baltimore Police Department, and the Cambridge Police Department for their work in the investigation. Mr. Lenzner thanked Assistant U.S. Attorneys Dana J. Brusca, Sandra Wilkinson, and Michael C. Hanlon, who are prosecuting the case.

A White House Fact Sheet previewing President Joe Biden’s Wednesday afternoon speech suggests he will announce increased overwatch of Federal Firearms License holders (FFLs) as part of his response to surging crime.

According to the White House, Biden’s Department of Justice (DOJ) “is announcing a new policy to underscore zero tolerance for willful violations of the law by [FFLs] that put public safety at risk.”

What the new policy means in real terms:

Absent extraordinary circumstances that would need to be justified to the Director, ATF will seek to revoke the licenses of dealers the first time that they violate federal law by willfully 1) transferring a firearm to a prohibited person, 2) failing to run a required background check, 3) falsifying records, such as a firearms transaction form, 4) failing to respond to an ATF tracing request, or 5) refusing to permit ATF to conduct an inspection in violation of the law.

The White House Fact Sheet notes, “ATF will notify every firearms dealer whose license is revoked about how to lawfully transfer any remaining inventory, as well as the potential criminal consequences of continuing to engage in the business of buying and selling guns without a license. The prior Administration stopped this important notification practice that helps deter future unlawful activity.”

Over 300 people have been killed in Chicago year-to-date and, as of June 3, 2021, murder in Los Angeles County was up 95 percent over where it was at that same time in 2020.

Chicago is located in a state with a red flag law, a 72-hour waiting period on gun purchases, and a Firearm Owners Identification (FOID) card requirement. Additionally, the county in which Chicago is located has an “assault weapons” ban.

Los Angeles County is located in a state with all the same controls mentioned re: Chicago, plus a “high capacity” magazine ban, universal background checks, a 10-day waiting period on gun purchases, gun registration requirements, a limit on the number of guns a law-abiding citizen can buy each month, and controls on ammunition, among other things.

The gun control are not stopping crime so the Biden Administration is focusing on licensed gun dealers.

Transgender runner CeCe Telfer unable to run Olympic trials due to eligibility rules

CeCe Telfer, the first openly transgender woman to win an NCAA title, will not be allowed to compete at the U.S. Olympic trials in the 400-meter hurdles because she did not meet the World Athletics eligibility regulations, the Associated Press reported.

Telfer entered the trials held in Eugene, Oregon, but was not allowed to compete based on the World Athletics guidelines released in 2019. The regulations require runners in international women's events between 400 meters and one mile to havetestosteronelevels below5 nonomolesper liter for a span of 12 months.

The regulations are associated with two-time Olympic gold medalist Caster Semenya, who has been fighting them for years.

Telfer initially competed on the men's team at Division II Franklin Pierce. She took time off and came back to compete for the women's team, winning the 400-meter NCAA title in 2019.

USATF also said in a statement it, "strongly supports inclusivity and providing a clear path to participation in the sport for all, while also maintaining competitive fairness.

“If CeCe meets the conditions for transgender athlete participation in the future, we wholeheartedly back her participation in international events as a member of Team USATF."

Anyone competing in the Olympic trials must meet requirements for the U.S. Olympic team, which has to follow regulations set by World Athletics.

Telfer was one of many openly transgender athletes attempting to compete at the Olympics. New Zealand weightlifter Laurel Hubbard was chosen by the country's Olympic Committee earlier this week, making her the first openly transgender athlete to compete at an Olympics. It has been met by criticism from competitors.

The First Cornerstone

The cornerstone was laid on Wednesday, September 18, 1793, during the first large public event staged in the federal city.

Today, my office released a report on the Department of Justice’s policy on body worn cameras. For the past decade, the DOJ has studied, supported, and promoted the use of body worn cameras by state, local, and tribal law enforcement agencies because these cameras enhance transparency and accountability, can provide important and useful information when officers are accused of wrongdoing, and often capture other relevant evidence. Nevertheless, our review found that DOJ law enforcement officers themselves largely did not use body worn cameras. Further, when we initiated our audit in June 2020, we found that the DOJ’s law enforcement components were unprepared to implement body worn camera programs.

Earlier this year, my office briefed the Department’s leadership on the preliminary findings of this audit. The DOJ subsequently took significant steps to move forward in developing a directive for DOJ law enforcement components to implement body worn camera programs. And in June 2021, the Deputy Attorney General issued a memorandum directing the Department’s four main law enforcement components to develop body worn camera policies within 30 days.

As Inspector General, I lead a workforce that includes special agents who conduct law enforcement operations. I believe that body worn cameras are essential tools for transparency and accountability. To that end, I have hired a senior law enforcement officer to oversee our body worn camera program, and we are in the process of finalizing and implementing our body worn camera policies.

In implementing our program, we’re considering the same issues that we recommend the DOJ consider, including: activation and deactivation policies, video retention policies, privacy concerns, governance related to the public release of body worn camera footage, and operational costs.

Seattle Detectives are asking for the public’s help in solving a murder of a Seattle artist after her body was found in the Montlake neighborhood.

On Sunday, May 30 the body of 45-year-old Necia McKendrick was found on the fringes of Interlaken Park near E. Eaton Place. Her body had been there for an undetermined amount of time. The King County Medical Examiner performed an autopsy and ruled her death a homicide.

McKendrick died from “multiple blunt force injuries,’ Q13 Fox Seattle reported.

Necia, who was known by many as “Queen” and ‘Q” was spent time on Broadway, especially in the area of Dick’s Burgers. She was a talented artist, producing and selling artwork on the street. She also spent time in Interlaken and Boren Parks, both of which are in the southern Montlake neighborhood.

Necia was last seen one month earlier, on April 30, 2021. Police are interested in speaking with anyone that had contact with her between April 30th and May 30, 2021.

BUFFALO, N.Y. - U.S. Attorney James P. Kennedy, Jr. announced today that Shawn Kostelny, 55, of Blasdell, NY, was arrested and charged by criminal complaint with receipt and possession of child pornography, which carry a mandatory minimum penalty of five years in prison, a maximum of 20 years, and a fine of $250,000.

Assistant U.S. Attorney David J. Rudroff, who is handling the case, stated that the between June 19 and June 23, 2020, a Homeland Security Investigations Special Agent, who was engaged in a Peer-to-Peer investigation online, downloaded 1,346 files of suspected child pornography from an IP address traced to the defendant.

On August 14, 2020, HSI Special Agents executed a search warrant at Kostelny’s residence and seized 49 electronic devices, including a laptop and hard drive. Forensic analysis of the 49 seized items recovered 8,018 images and 686 videos of suspected child pornography. Some of the images depicted children as young as three-years-old subjected to sexually explicit situations.

The complaint is the result of an investigation by Homeland Security Investigations, under the direction of Special Agent-in-Charge Kevin Kelly.

The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

Federal Jury Finds Milwaukee Man Guilty of Sex Trafficking

Richard G. Frohling, Acting United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Wisconsin,

announced that on June 22, 2021, Calvin C. Freeman, Jr., was convicted of sex trafficking and

related offenses following a federal jury trial in Milwaukee. The crimes of which Freeman was

convicted include:

 Conspiracy to Engage in Sex Trafficking

 Sex Trafficking by Force, Fraud, or Coercion (two counts)

 Interstate Transportation for Prostitution (three counts)

 Interstate Transportation of a Minor for Criminal Sexual Activity

 Possession of a Firearm/Ammunition by a Felon (two counts)

 Obstruction of Sex Trafficking Enforcement (two counts)

 Contempt of Court (three counts)

The evidence presented at trial established that Freeman used force, threats of force, fraud, and

coercion to compel female victims to engage in commercial sex acts in cities across the country,

including Milwaukee, Chicago, Las Vegas, New Orleans, and Miami, as well as in parts of

Southern California and Hawaii. One of the victims was a minor at the time Freeman transported

her for this purpose. The victims testified that Freeman kept and controlled all of the money they

made, whipping them with belts, threatening them with guns, and subjecting them to

dehumanizing punishments, such as forcible sodomy and smearing human feces in one victim’s

face when she failed to comply with his demands. The evidence also established that Freeman

repeatedly urged victims and witnesses not to speak to federal agents or to comply with court

orders, including while Freeman was in jail and subject to a no-contact order that had been

entered by a federal judge.

Freeman is scheduled to be sentenced on October 4, 2021, by Chief United States District Court

Judge Pamela Pepper. Freeman faces a maximum life term of imprisonment and a mandatory

minimum of 15 years of imprisonment.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Milwaukee Police Department, and the Federal Deposit

Insurance Corporation – Office of Inspector General investigated the case with the assistance of

the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, the Philadelphia Police Department, and the

It has been 3 months since I made clear that President Biden and Vice

President Harris need to get to the border and see the crisis their

administration has created. It has been 3 months since they pledged to

visit the border. Since then, as you all know–you look at all the

numbers–apprehensions at our southern border are at a record high.

More than 180,000 illegal aliens tried to cross our southern border

last month and were apprehended–the highest in 21 years. This is a

crisis. It threatens our national security and the safety of American

families. And we don't know how many people we didn't apprehend.

President Biden's immigration policies are putting unaccompanied

minors at risk of human trafficking, violence, sexual abuse, and

separation from their families. They are leading to an alarming

increase in human trafficking and drug smuggling by cartels.

FBI Director Wray said this month that there is ``no question'' that

cartel activity from Mexico is ``spilling over'' into the United

States. We are seeing it here in Florida. I talk to sheriffs. What they

are telling me is that unbelievable amounts of fentanyl are coming

across the border and getting into our State, putting Florida families

in danger. I was down at one lab, and they were telling me that two

people died that week from fentanyl.

But instead of securing the border and finishing wall construction

projects, President Biden is terminating all of the wall projects. Why

would you be doing this?

The inaction by President Biden and Vice President Harris is

inexcusable. I don't know what they are waiting for. Why can't they

acknowledge that a secure border is the best thing for our Nation? If

you talk to people around this country, they want a secure border. Why

can't they stand up against the radical left and say that open borders

are dangerous to American families?

Two weeks ago, the Vice President went to Guatemala and Mexico. While

she was there, she was asked by Lester Holt when she was going to go to

the border, and she laughed. I mean, this is not a laughing matter.

This is a crisis, and people are dying because of this crisis. It

should make all of us furious.

People are dying. Children are being exploited, and they are being

abandoned in the desert. Earlier this week, two Ecuadorian children–

two little girls, 3 and 5 years old–were dropped over a 14-foot

section of the border wall. We all saw the pictures.
