Zebra Principle. The idea is that the sophisticated mimicry that we find, say, in the insect world (where an insect might look exactly like a leaf, or twig etc), might also exist on a higher level or on a higher scale. In other words, some kind of higher intelligence may be present in the world, but be hidden through the cunning of mimicry. When in a herd the zebra's distinct stripes merge into a big mass and make it hard for predators to single out individual animals.
Some of you might be thinking about Carpenter's The Thing, or the Wachowski's The Matrix, after reading this. I know I did.
