DEA ?

https://theweek.com/news/1002366/haitian-presidents-assassins-reportedly-falsely-announced-themselves-as-dea-agents

The details of Haitian President Jovenel Moïse's assassination are still foggy hours after the attack, but a high-ranking government official told The Miami Herald that the assailaints were "mercenaries." They were not associated with the United States Drug Enforcement Administration, despite video capturing one of them yelling — in an American accent — "DEA Operation, everybody stand down" in the area around Moïse's home, other sources told the Herald.

Beyond that there isn't much to go on, although acting Prime Minister Claude Joseph suggested it was anything but a ragtag operation. Per CNN, he described the assassination as a "highly coordinated attack by a highly trained and heavily armed group." Joseph called on the international community to investigate the killing. President Biden, who said he was "shocked and saddened" to hear about Moïse's death, said the U.S. stands "ready to assist" Haiti. Read more at The Miami Herald.

Gov Big Bucks at it again

https://www.mercurynews.com/2021/07/07/gov-newsoms-1-5b-litter-cleanup-campaign-to-kick-off-in-contra-costa-county-today/

Gov. Gavin Newsom this morning will visit Contra Costa County to kick off a $1.5 billion statewide litter and trash cleanup initiative, the governor’s press office announced.

The program, titled Clean California, is a three-year effort to “clean up garbage statewide, beautify the state’s transportation network, educate the public about the harms of litter, and create long-lasting litter deterrents,” according to a governor’s office summary of transportation funding in next year’s state budget.

The initiative will create thousands of jobs for homeless people, veterans and former inmates, the governor’s office says. If successful, Clean California could eliminate 1 million cubic yards and 17,000 tons of litter, according to the budget summary.

The initiative will also create grants for beautification of train and bus stations and provide funding to local artists and students across the state. It is complemented by $12 billion plan that aims to create safer housing and shelter for people living in homeless encampments, a governor’s office release stated.

Every other school district in Illinois and more than 90 percent of school districts nationwide have elected school boards, but Chicago has never had one. Now, that’s set to change, as Gov. JB Pritzker is expected to sign a bill establishing an elected board for Chicago’s public school system.

Experts and community leaders say the fact that Chicago and a relatively small number of other cities with predominantly Black and brown public school student bodies haven’t allowed their citizens to elect the board amounts to racism, plain and simple.

In June, over Lightfoot’s objections, the Illinois House and Senate passed a bill phasing in an all-elected school board for Chicago by 2027, with 20 members elected from individual districts citywide, plus a president elected at large.

The only major cities that don’t have elected school boards are, like Chicago, ones where the public school system is overwhelmingly made up of students of color, including Philadelphia, Baltimore, New York, Cleveland and Boston.
