Bicyclist killed in Balboa Park crash was a prominent architect, planner

 

SAN DIEGO — A 57-year-old bicyclist killed Tuesday when she was struck by a car in Balboa Park was identified Wednesday as a prominent architect and planner who oversaw the planning and design of several San Diego State University facilities.

Laura Shinn worked as SDSU’s director of facilities planning and was serving as the 2021 president of the board of directors of the American Institute of Architects’ San Diego chapter. She also was a founding member of the Women in Architecture group in San Diego.

 

In a statement, SDSU described Shinn as “an incredibly talented architect who helped oversee much of our university’s development and growth.”

 

“From the Engineering & Interdisciplinary Science Complex to the ongoing development of SDSU Mission Valley, Laura’s creativity and commitment to sustainability was evident in every project she touched,” the statement read. “Those projects will forever serve as a physical testament to Laura’s impact both on and off campus.”

Timothy Lemucchi (1937-2021): Gentleman lawyer, author led life of adventure

 

Prominent Bakersfield lawyer Timothy Lemucchi, an author and fiercely competitive athlete whose pursuit of adventure took him around the world, died Wednesday at the age of 84 from unknown causes during a bicycle ride near Hart Park.

 

Lemucchi gained notoriety for defending clients in high-profile court cases, where friends and colleagues recalled his uncanny ability to read jurors and keep his cool amid difficult circumstances.

 

He once ran for Congress 1972

 

Lemucchi is also remembered as a patron of the arts who for many years maintained a membership with the Bakersfield Museum of Art.

Famed architect Helmut Jahn struck by two vehicles, killed while riding bicycle near St. Charles

 

Helmut Jahn, the famous German American architect behind some of Chicago’s most impressive buildings, including the Thompson Center, died when he was struck by two vehicles while riding his bicycle Saturday afternoon, according to Campton Hills police. He was 81.

 

Jahn was riding his bicycle northeast on Old Lafox Road, approaching its T-shaped intersection with Burlington Road, about 3:30 p.m. Saturday “and failed to stop at the posted stop sign,” according to a news release from Campton Hills police, a village near St. Charles in west suburban Kane County.
