LOS ANGELES – A West Hollywood man was found guilty by a federal jury today of nine felonies, including that he provided fatal doses of methamphetamine to two men who died at his apartment after being injected with the drug.

 

Edward Buck, 66, was found guilty of two counts of distribution of methamphetamine resulting in death, four counts of distribution of methamphetamine, one count of maintaining a drug-involved premises, and two counts of enticement to travel in interstate commerce for prostitution.

 

According to evidence presented at his nine-day trial, beginning no later than 2011 and continuing through September 2019, Buck engaged in a pattern of β€œparty and play,” or soliciting men to consume narcotics that he provided and perform sexual activities at his apartment. In these party-and-play sessions, Buck distributed drugs, including methamphetamine, and, in some instances, injected victims with drugs intravenously in a practice known as β€œslamming.”

 

Buck solicited his victims in various ways, including using social media platforms, dating and escort websites, or via referrals from his prior victims, including individuals he hired to do other work for him, offering a finder’s fee for referrals.

 

Buck exerted power and control over his victims, typically targeting individuals who were destitute, homeless or struggling with drug addiction. He exploited the wealth and power balance between them by offering his victims money to use drugs and to let Buck inject them with narcotics.

 

Once the men were at his apartment, Buck prepared syringes containing methamphetamine, sometimes personally injecting the victims with or without their consent. Buck also injected victims with more narcotics than they expected and sometimes injected victims while they were unconscious.

 

If a victim was not interested in using drugs, or used less than Buck wanted him to use, Buck refused to pay the person or reduced the person’s pay. Ultimately, if a victim refused to use methamphetamine too many times, Buck would lose interest and would no longer hire the person to party and play.

 

On two occasions, Buck’s party-and-play fetish turned lethal. Gemmel Moore died on July 27, 2017, and Timothy Dean died on January 7, 2019. Both victims suffered fatal methamphetamine overdoses in Buck’s apartment.

 

These deaths failed to deter Buck from continuing to distribute methamphetamine, and he continued distributing the drug to additional victims, including a man who overdosed twice in Buck’s apartment but survived after receiving immediate medical treatment.

 

Buck also enticed individuals to travel to California from other states for the purpose of engaging in prostitution through party-and-play sessions. Buck purchased a plane ticket for Moore, who had moved to Texas, so Moore could travel to Los Angeles in July 2017 to party and play at Buck’s apartment. In September 2018, Buck similarly purchased a plane ticket for another victim to fly from Iowa to Los Angeles.

Recently retired Senator Mike Enzi of Wyoming dies at 77 after bicycle accident

 

Gillette, WyomingΒ  β€” Retired Senator Mike Enzi, a Wyoming Republican known as a consensus-builder in an increasingly polarized Washington, has died following a bicycle accident. He was 77.

 

Enzi died peacefully Monday surrounded by family and friends, former spokesman Max D'Onofrio said.

Enzi had been hospitalized with a broken neck and ribs three days after a bicycle accident near Gillette on Friday. He was stabilized before being flown to a hospital in Colorado but remained unconscious, D'Onofrio said.

 

Enzi fell near his home about 8:30 p.m. Friday, family friend John Daly said, around the time Gillette police received a report of a man lying unresponsive in a road near a bike.

Police said they've seen no indication that anybody else was nearby or involved in the accident.

Team Audrain: Health department rolls out new campaign to encourage vaccinations

 

AUDRAIN COUNTY βˆ’ The Audrain County Health Department (ACHD) is rolling out a new vaccination campaign to encourage people to receive the vaccine.

 

A news release from ACHD says the low rates of vaccination in the county is the cause of the new campaign, Team Audrain. According to the state's vaccine dashboard, there are only 26.9% of Audrain County residents fully vaccinated. It shows 181 doses have been administered the last seven days.

 

The campaign hopes to increase awareness of getting vaccinated, spark more conversations and overall increase the number of vaccinated individuals in the county.

 

Vaccinated individuals will be able to fill out a survey, or call 573-581-1332, to receive a metal 'COVID-19 Vaccinated' lapel pin in the mail. Recipients will be asked to wear the pin around town and post a picture on social media using '#TeamAudrain' on their post. Those who share may get the opportunity to have their COVID-19 vaccination story shared on ACHD social media.

Air Force to land planes on Michigan highway during war training exercise

 

ALPENA COUNTY, MI – A portion of a Northern Michigan highway will be closed when the U.S. Air Force trains personnel to land on civilian roadways as part of the annual Northern Strike war-readiness training exercise next month, WPBN/WGTU reports.

 

Airmen will attempt to land two C-146 and four A-10 aircraft on M-32, near the Alpena Combat Readiness Training Center in Alpena County, on Thursday, Aug. 5, the report said. The highway will be closed from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. from east of Herron Road to west of King Settlement Road for the exercise.

 

Participating units are the Michigan Air National Guard’s127th Wing from Selfridge Air National Guard Base, the Air Force’s 355th Wing from Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Arizona and the Air Force Special Operations Command from Duke Field in Florida, the report said.

Information gathered separately by another congressional committee indicate the contact occurred in September, the month before the FISA warrant was approved.

 

A spokeswoman for the FBI declined comment. Spokespersons for Perkins Coie and the Justice Department did not return a message seeking comment.

 

The sources also said Baker’s interview broke new ground both about the FBI’s use of news media in 2016 and 2017 to further the Trump case and about Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein’s conversations in spring 2017 regarding possible use of a body wire to record Trump.

 

β€œThe interview was one of the most productive we had and it opened up many new investigative leads,” one source said.

 

Another said Baker could not answer some questions about FBI media contacts, citing an ongoing investigation by the Justice Department inspector general into alleged illegal leaks, during and after the election, about the Trump collusion probe and other matters.

Object on the road, maybe. Over the handlebars and all bets are off.

 

A small dog ran under my bike from the side once. Came out of tall grass and hit my chainwheel. I was around the 25 KMH (c. 15MPH), just rolling out down a small hill. Broke my collar bone, 4 ribs and shoulder blade. I remember telling myself to get my chin tucked, which is all I had time for. Have to give up other body parts to keep your head protected.

 

Have to figure on e-bikes nowadays, too. They're a plague where I am. Lots of old fucks who were never athletes and have no adequate speed/time/distance perception/coordination while they're body is in movement, IMO. Bad cycling habits, like side by side talking on bike trails around blind corners and then freeze when they see oncoming traffic Lots of accidents.

 

Don't know what it's like there with e-bikes.

Preetinder Singh Bharara (/priːt bΙ™ΛˆrɑːrΙ™/; born October 13, 1968) is an American lawyer, author, and former federal prosecutor who served as the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York from 2009 to 2017. He served as an Assistant U.S. Attorney for five years prior to leading the Southern District. According to The New York Times, Bharara was one of the "nation's most aggressive and outspoken prosecutors of public corruption and Wall Street crime during his tenure.[1][2]

 

Born in Firozpur, India, his family immigrated to New Jersey in 1970. Bharara graduated from Harvard College in 1990 and attended Columbia Law School before joining Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher as a litigation associate in 1993. Three years later he moved to Shereff, Friedman, Hoffman & Goodman, where he did white-collar defense work. Bharara first entered the public sector as chief counsel to Senator Chuck Schumer, charged with investigating the 2006 presidential dismissal of U.S. attorneys. He transferred to the U.S. Department of Justice in 2004 as an assistant U.S. Attorney, launching his career as a federal prosecutor. His office heavily prosecuted the Italian mafia, convicting four out of the Five Families of drug trafficking, racketeering, and conspiracy to commit murder. Bharara similarly headed various counter-terrorism cases, particularly against Al-Qaeda.
