Hollywood insiders say there's growing tension at Disney as CEO Bob Chapek chafes at Bob Iger's 'long goodbye'

They say Bob Chapek's "Black Widow" release strategy may have hurt relations with China.

Tension is building between the Disney chiefs Bob Iger and Bob Chapek over the future of the Mouse House, four people told Insider.

One senior executive at a non-Disney studio who's familiar with Chapek's thinking said many in Hollywood believed the two men were no longer as friendly as they had been, that Chapek was eager to get on with running Disney on his own terms, and that Iger had been stalling his exit for too long.

"It's just common knowledge. They don't get along," this person said. "It's awkward with Bob Iger around, and it's a long goodbye, and Chapek is sitting there saying, 'I just want to run the company.'''

Chapek succeeded Iger in February 2020 to become the company's seventh chief executive, but his experience is limited to the parks and consumer products. (Iger's previous heir apparent, Tom Staggs, also came from the parks division, but left the company in 2016).

As Chapek stepped up, Iger became executive chairman and kept responsibilities for the content unit to give Wall Street confidence in Disney's movie and TV making. He's set to depart at the end of the year.

The New York Times reported in April 2020 that Iger was reasserting control because of how much the pandemic had ravaged Disney's business.

"When Bob [Iger] inserted himself back into the company, it was a huge slap in the face. The concern was that Bob Chapek couldn't handle it," the senior studio executive said.

A cinema-industry executive familiar with the thinking at Disney said Iger was frustrated that Chapek might have harmed the company's carefully cultivated relationships in the all-important China market with its "Black Widow" release strategy.

Disney's choice of July 9 to release the latest Marvel movie internationally bumped into China's monthlong celebrations of the Chinese Communist Party's 100th anniversary. The cinema-industry executive noted that China had yet to give a release date for "Black Widow." Widespread piracy of the movie also threatens to hurt the China box office.

Marvel also was displeased with the decision to simultaneously release "Black Widow" in theaters and on streaming, two sources close to the company said. One said the view at Marvel was that the premium-video-on-demand decision caused piracy issues and hurt the box-office performance.

The debut of "Black Widow" was viewed as successful, booking $80 million in North America theaters its opening weekend and a further $60 million in streaming revenue, but the film nosedived in its second week.

The stumble is leading to chatter among industry sources that Chapek's positive reception on Wall Street could be cooling.

Jessica Reif Ehrlich, a senior media and entertainment analyst at BofA Securities who is a longtime Disney watcher, said Chapek had done a great job of managing through the pandemic and she expected Disney's theme parks to do "extraordinarily well."

"The questionable part is the content side of the business, which was Bob Iger's strength. I don't know how much of a learning curve he still needs. He has been open to experimentation, though this last one ['Black Widow' release strategy] is a big one, missing the whole China window," Ehrlich said.

"No Marvel movie has ever seen such a decline in the second week of a theatrical run or even in the Saturday and Sunday of opening weekend. It is an embarrassment. It seems like a mistake. Those decisions go right to the top, but it's still early and we're in very unusual times."

The analyst Rich Greenfield, a partner at LightShed Partners, meanwhile, believes Chapek was right to release "Black Widow" on streaming at the same time as in theaters since movie lovers are not returning to the theaters in great numbers. "Simply relying on movie theaters isn't going to work in the future," he said.

One rumor going around Disney is that Chapek plans to stop putting executives on multiyear employment contracts to get greater flexibility to hire and fire, a sign of how he may be seeking to put a bigger stamp on the company. The studio exec also predicted Chapek had planned some restructuring at the company this fall.

Some of Iger's closest lieutenants, the public-relations consigliere Zenia Mucha and the general counsel Alan Braverman, are hitting the exits, which will give Chapek more freedom to alter Disney's power structures. Disney is working to replace Mucha and using the opportunity to overhaul its corporate communications strategy, two sources told Insider.

Disney declined to comment, and emails to Iger and Chapek were not immediately returned.

>The Walt Disney Company announced Friday that it will require all salaried and non-union hourly employees who work at company sites nationwide to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

The Walt Disney Company Becomes The Latest Entity To Require All U.S. Staff Members To Be Vaccinated Against COVID-19

On Friday Disney said it will now require all salaried and non-union staff to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Any non-vaccinated workers will need to be fully protected in the next 60 days or will risk losing their jobs.

This will include any employees that are currently working from home. Individuals will not be able to access any Disney site until verification of the vaccinations is seen.

Those staff members that are union workers are also presently expected to also have to follow the requirements after discussions with their union representatives.

The Walt Disney Co. DIS -1.3% is certainly not the first or only institution to mandate vaccinations recently. This week Netflix NFLX +0.6% stated that all cast and crew on every production under their banner must have received their shots to work.

In a statement, the company said, โ€œAt The Walt Disney Company, the safety and well-being of our employees during the pandemic has been and continues to be a top priority.โ€

โ€œToward that end, and based on the latest recommendations of scientists, health officials and our own medical professionals that the COVID-19 vaccine provides the best protection against severe infection, we are requiring that all salaried and non-union hourly employees in the U.S. working at any of our sites be fully vaccinated.โ€

In addition to current Disney workers, no hire will be made by the company to any individual that has not yet received the vaccine.

The growing list of large global corporations that currently have some sort of vaccine mandate includes, Google GOOG -1%, The Washington Post, Twitter, Facebook, Uber UBER -2.8%, Lyft and as President Biden announced recently, all Federal employees.

With the Delta variant pushing infection numbers up around the world, it is increasingly becoming apparent that most forms of entertainment, lifestyle, travel and employment will be strongly affected if an individual has not been vaccinated.

The U.K. is now allowing vaccinated travellers to enter the country without quarantine, in several EU countries proof of protection is required to enter museums, go to restaurants or movie theaters and even stay at hotels.

The U.K. government is now also aiming to push into law a so-called COVID pass to access nightclubs, concert venues and sporting events.

There has been some push-back to these requirements in the U.S. however. As of the beginning of July, at least 34 states had introduced bills that would limit requiring someone to demonstrate their vaccination status.

As a result, concerns have risen amongst health officials around their ability to properly contain new strains if legislation prohibits some form of protection mandate.

DOJ says it's legal to mandate COVID vaccines

The Department of Justice on Monday published an opinion indicating that coronavirus vaccine mandates are legal despite only being approved for emergency use.

The judgment was brought to light as areas across the country have either mulled or implemented shot mandates in some capacity amid a surge in cases. The Food and Drug Administration's emergency use go-ahead "does not prohibit public or private entities from imposing vaccination requirements for vaccines that are subject to EUAs," the DOJ's Office of Legal Counsel wrote. Citizens have a right to be "'informed' of certain information, including 'the option to accept or refuse administration of the product,'" though businesses, government, and other entities are not prohibited from requiring doses from Pfizer, Moderna, or Johnson and Johnson, all of which have received only emergency use authorizations, the DOJ added.

None of the shots have been given a set date for full FDA approval, though health officials, including Dr. Anthony Fauci, President Joe Biden's chief medical adviser, are confident the vaccinations will be given the OK from the government body. However, both federal and local entities have opted not to wait for the FDA to mandate vaccinations.

On Monday, the Department of Veterans Affairs became the first federal agency to mandate COVID-19 inoculations for employees. Title 38 personnel, including physicians, dentists, registered nurses, and others, will have eight weeks to become fully vaccinated against the disease in compliance with the new policy.

"We're mandating vaccines for Title 38 employees because it's the best way to keep veterans safe, especially as the delta variant spreads across the country," VA Secretary Denis McDonough said in a statement. "Whenever a Veteran or VA employee sets foot in a VA facility, they deserve to know that we have done everything in our power to protect them from COVID-19. With this mandate, we can once again make โ€” and keep โ€” that fundamental promise."

Earlier on the same day, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio announced that the boroughs would require all city workers to be vaccinated or subject themselves to weekly virus testing. Roughly 340,000 workers, teachers, and police officers will be under the requirement, which takes effect in September.

"September is the pivot point of the recovery," the Democratic mayor explained at a press conference on Monday. "And so, on Sept. 13, the first day of school, every single city employee will be expected to be either vaccinated or be tested weekly."

Also on Monday, California Gov. Gavin Newsom said that all government employees and healthcare workers will be required to show proof of COVID-19 vaccination or face weekly screenings.

He said on Monday that the Golden State โ€œwill have the strongest state vaccine verification system in the U.S. Weโ€™re experiencing a pandemic of the unvaccinated. Everyone that can get vaccinated โ€” should.โ€

Governor DeSantis: Florida Parents Are Free to Choose

Citing Parentsโ€™ Bill of Rights, DeSantis protects right of parents to decide question of masks in schools for their children

FORT MYERS, Fla. โ€” Today, Governor Ron DeSantis was joined by Florida parents, students, elected officials and community leaders as he called for a stop to school mask mandates, reinforcing that every parent should have the right to choose what is best for their child. At the event, Governor DeSantis announced that he will issue an executive order directing the Florida Department of Health (FDOH) to enter rulemaking in collaboration with the Florida Department of Education (FDOE) to protect parentsโ€™ freedom to choose whether their children wear masks.

โ€œThe federal government has no right to tell parents that in order for their kids to attend school in person, they must be forced to wear a mask all day, every day,โ€ said Governor Ron DeSantis. โ€œMany Florida schoolchildren have suffered under forced masking policies, and it is prudent to protect the ability of parents to make decisions regarding the wearing of masks by their children.โ€

The Governorโ€™s Executive Order can be found HERE.

Todayโ€™s action is in response to several Florida school boards considering or implementing mask mandates in their schools after the Biden Administration issued unscientific and inconsistent recommendations that school-aged children wear masks. FDOH will enter rulemaking in collaboration with FDOE. This is consistent with HB 241 (Parentsโ€™ Bill of rights), which was signed into law on June 29. The bill outlines parental rights relating to a minor childโ€™s education, upbringing and health.

Earlier this week, Governor DeSantis hosted a roundtable discussion about the impacts that mask wearing have in schools. Find the roundtable discussion HERE.
