United States Army troops from the 3rd Batallion, 509th Infantry Airbourne conducted an airborne assault dropping into 'Kangaroo Dropzone' near Charters Towers, Queensland for Exercise Talisman Sabre 2021 (TS21).

 

The paratroopers, based in Alaska, jumped from RAAF C-17A Globemaster aircraft, testing interoperability between Australia and the U.S.

 

Held every two years, TS21 is the largest bilateral training activity between Australia and the United States, aimed to test Australian interoperability with the United States and other participating forces in complex warfighting scenarios. In addition to the United States, TS21 involves participating forces from Canada, Japan, the Republic of Korea, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom.

Marvel also was displeased with the decision to simultaneously release "Black Widow" in theaters and on streaming, two sources close to the company said. One said the view at Marvel was that the premium-video-on-demand decision caused piracy issues and hurt the box-office performance.

The debut of "Black Widow" was viewed as successful, booking $80 million in North America theaters its opening weekend and a further $60 million in streaming revenue, but the film nosedived in its second week.

The stumble is leading to chatter among industry sources that Chapek's positive reception on Wall Street could be cooling.

Jessica Reif Ehrlich, a senior media and entertainment analyst at BofA Securities who is a longtime Disney watcher, said Chapek had done a great job of managing through the pandemic and she expected Disney's theme parks to do "extraordinarily well."

"The questionable part is the content side of the business, which was Bob Iger's strength. I don't know how much of a learning curve he still needs. He has been open to experimentation, though this last one ['Black Widow' release strategy] is a big one, missing the whole China window," Ehrlich said.

"No Marvel movie has ever seen such a decline in the second week of a theatrical run or even in the Saturday and Sunday of opening weekend. It is an embarrassment. It seems like a mistake. Those decisions go right to the top, but it's still early and we're in very unusual times."

The analyst Rich Greenfield, a partner at LightShed Partners, meanwhile, believes Chapek was right to release "Black Widow" on streaming at the same time as in theaters since movie lovers are not returning to the theaters in great numbers. "Simply relying on movie theaters isn't going to work in the future," he said.

One rumor going around Disney is that Chapek plans to stop putting executives on multiyear employment contracts to get greater flexibility to hire and fire, a sign of how he may be seeking to put a bigger stamp on the company. The studio exec also predicted Chapek had planned some restructuring at the company this fall.

Some of Iger's closest lieutenants, the public-relations consigliere Zenia Mucha and the general counsel Alan Braverman, are hitting the exits, which will give Chapek more freedom to alter Disney's power structures. Disney is working to replace Mucha and using the opportunity to overhaul its corporate communications strategy, two sources told Insider.

Disney declined to comment, and emails to Iger and Chapek were not immediately returned.

On Friday Disney said it will now require all salaried and non-union staff to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Any non-vaccinated workers will need to be fully protected in the next 60 days or will risk losing their jobs.

This will include any employees that are currently working from home. Individuals will not be able to access any Disney site until verification of the vaccinations is seen.

Those staff members that are union workers are also presently expected to also have to follow the requirements after discussions with their union representatives.

The Walt Disney Co. DIS -1.3% is certainly not the first or only institution to mandate vaccinations recently. This week Netflix NFLX +0.6% stated that all cast and crew on every production under their banner must have received their shots to work.

In a statement, the company said, β€œAt The Walt Disney Company, the safety and well-being of our employees during the pandemic has been and continues to be a top priority.”

β€œToward that end, and based on the latest recommendations of scientists, health officials and our own medical professionals that the COVID-19 vaccine provides the best protection against severe infection, we are requiring that all salaried and non-union hourly employees in the U.S. working at any of our sites be fully vaccinated.”

In addition to current Disney workers, no hire will be made by the company to any individual that has not yet received the vaccine.

The growing list of large global corporations that currently have some sort of vaccine mandate includes, Google GOOG -1%, The Washington Post, Twitter, Facebook, Uber UBER -2.8%, Lyft and as President Biden announced recently, all Federal employees.

With the Delta variant pushing infection numbers up around the world, it is increasingly becoming apparent that most forms of entertainment, lifestyle, travel and employment will be strongly affected if an individual has not been vaccinated.

The U.K. is now allowing vaccinated travellers to enter the country without quarantine, in several EU countries proof of protection is required to enter museums, go to restaurants or movie theaters and even stay at hotels.

The U.K. government is now also aiming to push into law a so-called COVID pass to access nightclubs, concert venues and sporting events.

There has been some push-back to these requirements in the U.S. however. As of the beginning of July, at least 34 states had introduced bills that would limit requiring someone to demonstrate their vaccination status.

As a result, concerns have risen amongst health officials around their ability to properly contain new strains if legislation prohibits some form of protection mandate.

The Food and Drug Administration's emergency use go-ahead "does not prohibit public or private entities from imposing vaccination requirements for vaccines that are subject to EUAs," the DOJ's Office of Legal Counsel wrote. Citizens have a right to be "'informed' of certain information, including 'the option to accept or refuse administration of the product,'" though businesses, government, and other entities are not prohibited from requiring doses from Pfizer, Moderna, or Johnson and Johnson, all of which have received only emergency use authorizations, the DOJ added.

None of the shots have been given a set date for full FDA approval, though health officials, including Dr. Anthony Fauci, President Joe Biden's chief medical adviser, are confident the vaccinations will be given the OK from the government body. However, both federal and local entities have opted not to wait for the FDA to mandate vaccinations.

On Monday, the Department of Veterans Affairs became the first federal agency to mandate COVID-19 inoculations for employees. Title 38 personnel, including physicians, dentists, registered nurses, and others, will have eight weeks to become fully vaccinated against the disease in compliance with the new policy.

"We're mandating vaccines for Title 38 employees because it's the best way to keep veterans safe, especially as the delta variant spreads across the country," VA Secretary Denis McDonough said in a statement. "Whenever a Veteran or VA employee sets foot in a VA facility, they deserve to know that we have done everything in our power to protect them from COVID-19. With this mandate, we can once again make β€” and keep β€” that fundamental promise."

Earlier on the same day, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio announced that the boroughs would require all city workers to be vaccinated or subject themselves to weekly virus testing. Roughly 340,000 workers, teachers, and police officers will be under the requirement, which takes effect in September.

"September is the pivot point of the recovery," the Democratic mayor explained at a press conference on Monday. "And so, on Sept. 13, the first day of school, every single city employee will be expected to be either vaccinated or be tested weekly."

Also on Monday, California Gov. Gavin Newsom said that all government employees and healthcare workers will be required to show proof of COVID-19 vaccination or face weekly screenings.

He said on Monday that the Golden State β€œwill have the strongest state vaccine verification system in the U.S. We’re experiencing a pandemic of the unvaccinated. Everyone that can get vaccinated β€” should.”

This comes after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued guidelines on Tuesday that recommended students K-12 wear masks when returning to class in the fall. However, some parents and advocates remained strongly opposed to the move.

I looked over Nebraska. Dr, Frank is going there this week. I was kind of expecting to see just a start of the control algorithm and a slide into the pre-determined setpoint. What I saw was a re-start of the algorithm, as shown by a repeat of the of the initial system perturbation, once following the call of FL for Trump and again following the "Edison Zero". Note here: Each state seems to have it's own system perturbation shape to keep the trends from looking too similar state-to-state. I don't see a real change in the overall setpoint, though. It looks like Nebraska was always planned for around a ratio of around 148%. Note the same double-peaked hill feature.

The Biden administration withdrew a Trump administration Department of Homeland Security regulation that was designed to protect Americans from violent Islamic terrorists or Chinese spies.

 

These alleged spies would use their student visas to stay in the United States, the report adds.

 

The Biden administration withdrew Proposed Rule 2020-20845 on July 6th.

 

Under Trump, the U.S. was attempting to monitor the status of student visa holders in the United States due to Chinese spies and Islamic terrorists.

 

The Trump administration proposed the rule back in September 2020. It required student visa holders to β€œrenew them every two or four years and to check that they are still in good standing at universities.”

 

Todd Bensman of Townhall explained, β€œThe most valuable part of the process would have had DHS agents conduct eyeball-to-eyeball interviews with renewal applicants. The agents also would collect biometric information, spot-check progress at academic institutions, and double-check that original claimed purposes remained valid. This periodic regimen would have made sure not only that F-1 visa holders from those countries were keeping their end of the bargain but provide opportunities for suspicious activity referrals to the FBI.”

 

β€œIn its official explanation, the Biden administration pointed out that 99 percent of those who commented on the regulation – a great many of them likely the affected foreigners, school administrators, and exchange visitor programs – just didn’t want to go through all the bothersome rigmarole for their generous host nation’s security interests,” Bensman continued.
