Putting the IP in the host file rather than using DNS does not change how you interact with the server. It just skips the DNS lookup. You're not in any danger putting the server address in your host file.

On it's own line with nothing else (sometimes people put the # because other lines have it, not realizing what it is) and you have to run notepad as admin, if that's what you used to edit it.
