DNS is not secure at all.
ISPs inject all sorts of shot into it and can also modify it, that's done in certain countries for censorship.
IF you have verified IPs yourself AND the IPs do not change, having them in the hosts file is MORE secure.
You MUST verify them yourself though. Do not trust anyone on this matter.

w/ Linux you get thousand updates every day. How do you know that there are no security issues added anywhere? That you are not targeted? You can't.
How do you make sure the hardware / firmware of your computer does not already contain back doors? You can't.
How do you make sure even the monitor that you are using is does not contain back doors or security flaws and was compromised? You can't.
That's also why digital currencies is such a stupid idea. Nothing is safe. Everything is filled with security flaws (intentionally even).
