Black shirts were actually called "service Blues" when I was Active Duty. The US Navy had Service and Dress Whites for warm weather and Winter uniforms were the Service or Dress Blues.

From what you describe, the braiding sounds like the Commanding Officer, we called that feature "scrambled eggs"

A bunch of braiding strips down the sleeves tells me enlisted though. Services Strips, one stripe for every four years of service

Might want to check about the badge on the hat. An anchor with or without the small stars would go with the "black" shirt.

Squirrel now a trendy dining option in Scotland

By Hannah Frishberg February 11, 2022

Most New Yorkers may consider them rats with wings, but elsewhere squirrel has become a chic new menu item.

As part of a growing ethical dining trend, chefs have begun serving up dishes made with the North American gray squirrel, an invasive species in the nation.

“My original starting point with gray squirrel was taste. But it’s also great for the environment,” renowned Scottish chef Paul Wedgewood told the Guardian of the inspiration for adding gray squirrel to his Edinburgh restaurant Royal Mile’s menu in 2008. “It’s mellow, nutty and a bit gamey. It’s just a really nice flavor, and it’s easy to match,” added Wedgewood, who has even made squirrel haggis. “Anyone who’s doing rabbit could just easily swap in squirrel.”

In addition to being a tasty alternative for some more commonly used meats, eating squirrel in the UK also offers moral flavor: The rodent is significantly to blame for causing the local extinction of England and Wales’ native red squirrel in large swaths of the nation.

The response to squirrel as not vermin but restaurant-quality delicacy has been great, said Wedgewood.

“The demand is there from customers,” he said. “I had a guy fly in from Switzerland who ordered a squirrel tasting menu. A six-course menu…just with squirrel!”

The Post was unable to locate any restaurants or butchers in New York City that will admit to selling squirrel. But that doesn’t mean New Yorkers can’t enjoy this up and coming plat du jour — they may just have to kill and cook the creature themselves.

New York State’s Department of Environmental Conservation considers squirrels “nuisance animals” and they may be killed at any time in any manner by the owners or occupants if they are injuring property. And from Nov. 1 to Feb. 28 it is open season on gray, black and fox squirrels in New York City, although hunters are limited to six squirrel bodies a day and legally limited in the methods they’re allowed to use to kill the creatures. If killed not during hunting or season, the squirrel is technically required to be “buried or cremated immediately.”

Wedgewood recommends drizzling two racks of squirrel with wild garlic oil and pairing it with carrot puree.

Some eaters say the taste can be addictive.

“We associate some animals with our own filth,” Steven Rinella told The Post in 2012 about his practice of hunting and eating the squirrels which stepped foot in his Fort Greene garden.

Rinella wrote in his hunting memoir that he sometimes gets such a craving for squirrel meat that “I’ll go to extremes to get it.”

In 1961 four sections of AFDB-7 were reactivated and towed to Holy Loch, Scotland, where they were assembled as part of a maintenance facility for the Navy's then-new force of fleet ballistic missile submarines (SSBN). Placed in service under the name Los Alamos in November 1961, she was kept at Holy Loch for more than three decades as an important part of the Nation's strategic retaliatory force. Annually drydocking up to seventeen ballistic missile submarines and attack submarines (SSN), she permitted the forward deployment of these essential warships, thus acting as an important "force multiplier".

Brexit Freedoms Bill poses threat to devolution, Scotland’s constitution secretary warns

by Marty Mclaughlin 20 February 2022

ngus Robertson said he was “particularly concerned” that Boris Johnson’s administration is intent on pushing through “sweeping measures” post-Brexit that will have “profound consequence” for Scotland and other devolved nations in the UK.

In a letter to Jacob Rees-Mogg, the newly appointed UK minister for Brexit opportunities, Mr Robertson also questioned he UK government’s “deregulation” agenda, given its implications for workers’ rights, food standards, environmental standards, and other policy areas.

In the letter, released by the Scottish Government, Mr Robertson explained: “Given the evidence since the Brexit vote I am particularly concerned that the UK government will look for further opportunities to undermine devolution.

"As leader of the House of Commons you yourself referred to post-1997 reforms as constitutional vandalism which needed to be undone.

“Our concerns extend to the Brexit Freedoms Bill that will give legislative powers to remove or amend retained EU law, ‘liberating’ us from the common area of democracy and the rule of law whose benefits we enjoyed for almost five decades.

"The UK government seems ready to unveil these sweeping measures, which will have profound consequences for the devolved governments, with next to no engagement, despite commitments to reset relationships with the devolved governments in the conclusions of the intergovernmental relations review.

"Any proposals to change the law in devolved areas must not take place without the consent of the Scottish Parliament."

In his letter, the SNP MSP for Edinburgh Central also said the “simple truth of the matter” was that there has been a “profound absence” of benefits as a result of Brexit. On the contrary, he said, the “damage, delays, and dislocation” caused by leaving the EU were “all too evident.”

He went on: “We know that Scotland’s total trade with the EU fell by 24 per cent in the year to September 2021 compared to the equivalent period in 2019, while Scotland’s trade with non-EU countries fell by 16 per cent over the same period.

“Despite claims that the UK government will cut red tape following the EU exit, Brexit has been the direct cause of trade friction, additional checks and bureaucracy and increased administration costs.”

Looks like fairly standard for the subs to be forward deployed from Holy Loch, not just in for repairs. If a sub was going to be based there for a number of years, a high-ranking officer could have a Cadillac shipped over and would be quartered ashore.

Here's a portion of what I just found on USS THEODORE ROOSEVELT (SSBN-600)

On the 19th, she stood out of Charleston on her first deterrent patrol. She concluded that patrol on 23 September at the FBM base at Holy Loch, Scotland.

Over the next three and one-half years, the submarine made 15 more deterrent patrols, departing from and returning to the Holy Loch base in each instance. Late in the spring of 1965, she departed Holy Loch on her 17th and final patrol of the deployment.

At the end of the training period, she returned to Charleston to load missiles and to prepare for another series of deterrent patrols out of Holy Loch. She embarked upon her 18th patrol on 1 June and completed that cruise at the Holy Loch base.

Theodore Roosevelt's second tour of duty operating from the Scotland base proved to be very brief in comparison to her first. Between mid-June of 1967 and February of 1968, she completed her 18th, 19th, 20th, and 21st patrols. On 20 March 1968 while returning to Holy Loch from her 21st patrol, the submarine ran aground off the western coast of Scotland. After dry-docking for temporary correction of the damage, she departed Holy Loch on 5 April to return to the United States for permanent repairs. Between 18 and 20 April, she unloaded her missiles at Charleston and then headed north to New London. On the 23d, she arrived in the yard of the Electric Boat Division and commenced an extended repair period. Labor disputes caused delays, and Theodore Roosevelt did not complete her repairs until mid-October. She spent the latter part of that month in sea trials and then departed New London on 2 November on her post-repair shakedown cruise. She visited Norfolk, Puerto Rico, and St. Croix before concluding the cruise at Charleston on 27 November. She conducted training operations out of Charleston before deploying to Holy Loch again early in 1969.

That tour of duty lasted until May 1971. During the interim, she conducted nine more deterrent patrols, returning to Holy Loch for refit after each. On 12 May 1971, she stood out of Holy Loch on the 31st patrol of her career

Scotland making push to revive langoustine exports, but Brexit still an obstacle

By Nicki Holmyard May 10, 2022

The Scottish seafood industry, with help from the Scottish government, is working to revive its langoustine exports after years of decline.

Exports of langoustine – also known as nephrops (Nephrops norwegicus) – from the U.K. to major markets have almost halved in the past decade. Typically exported to Europe – with the three largest buyers being Spain, Italy, and France – the U.K. exported a total of 18,000 metric tons (MT) of langoustine in 2010, with the majority of that being sourced from Scotland.

However, exports or the product dropped to around 9,000 MT in 2019, and the situation has only worsened since then due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In response to the drop, the Scottish government formed a working group in October 2020, tasked with finding ways for the langoustine industry to emerge from the pandemic and improve the long-term stability and resilience of the supply chain.

A report commissioned by Seafood Scotland, an organization that works to promote Scottish seafood, said langoustines are the most-important shellfish species in terms of landed value and socio-economic importance to Scottish coastal communities. In 2019, Scottish vessels landed GBP 91 million (USD 114 million) of langoustine, making it the second-most valuable stock landed in Scotland after mackerel. Scotland’s landings comprised 43 percent of global langoustine supply.

A high proportion of langoustine landed in Scotland enter the supply chain as tails, destined for the scampi-processing market – a fact the report noted is a relatively unique characteristic of the U.K. market. The result is a diverse supply chain and reliable market in the U.K. and Ireland, but the price for tails is lower than for whole langoustine. When the U.K. foodservice market collapsed, the price for tails fell by 20 to 30 percent, and this loss has yet to be recovered, according to Simon MacDonald, chair of the West Coast Regional Inshore Fisheries Group.

MacDonald told SeafoodSource the industry is split into two main fishing groups: smaller scale trap fisheries and larger bottom-trawlers.

“Most of the langoustine that are caught by a trawler, they tail them on board,” he said.

The trap fishery makes up a smaller amount of the overall volume, but the higher quality of the product leads a lot of the catch to be exported live, “particularly to Europe,” MacDonald said.

Business that was hampered by COVID-19 is improving as lock-down restrictions finally lift in Europe, but some fishermen, and langoustine and scampi processors, are still struggling to regain pre-pandemic levels of viability and profitability. To make matters worse, Brexit has continued to be an added cost for any exporters – and according to MacDonald that problem is likely to get worse.

“We’ve had all sorts of problems with Brexit, mostly with the paperwork and the costs of it,” he said. “They’ve got new health certificates that just came out, which are far more complicated than the ones we had before.”

According to MacDonald, in the early days of Brexit, shipments were getting stuck due to all the new requirements. The cost of paperwork is also high, reaching up to GBP 600 (USD 740, EUR 700) per customer order, and the delay in introducing an electronic system means that there is considerable room for mistakes to be make, given the volume of paperwork that needs to be filled in. At best, mistakes hold up the shipment, with product deterioration an inevitable consequence, and at worst, the load is rejected or condemned.

“We had a whole lorry of consignment where they refused to sign off because of the wrong quality of ink,” MacDonald said. “You’re at the mercy of the overzealous border control folks.”

The new paperwork requirements also mean that late orders cannot be fulfilled. Prior to Brexit, orders could be accepted up to a relatively late hour prior to dispatch. Some exporters have set up businesses in France to receive shipments as a single order so that only one set of certifications is required.

MacNeil Shellfish, a wholesaler in Scotland with its own logistics arm, has faced delays despite extensive preparation for the shift, MacNeil Shellfish Export Manager Libby McQuarrie told SeafoodSource.

“Even though we had planned extensively, it was still a challenge, there was so much unknown,” she said. “Effectively, Brexit has changed our whole administrative process in the office.”

Kate Middleton and Prince William are n Scotland and their Titles are completely different

Presenting the Earl and Countess

By Mehera Bonner May 11, 2022

Kate Middleton and Prince William are currently in Scotland for a quick two day visit, but please be advised that they do not go by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge when they're in the country. Instead, Kate and William are formally known as the Earl and Countess of Strathearn. Give them a warm, confused welcome!

So, why are William and Kate's Scottish titles different?

Just a few hours before William and Kate married in 2011, the Queen gave William not one but three titles, and Buckingham Palace releasing the following statement:

“The Queen has today been pleased to confer a Dukedom on Prince William of Wales. His titles will be Duke of Cambridge, Earl of Strathearn, and Baron Carrickfergus. Prince William thus becomes His Royal Highness The Duke of Cambridge and Miss Catherine Middleton on marriage will become Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge.”

Upon marrying William, Kate was also granted his titles—which means that along with being Duchess of Cambridge, she is Countess of Strathearn in Scotland as well as Lady Carrickfergus when she goes to Northern Ireland.

We have a deep dive on Kate's titles (and how they'll change over time) right this way, but interesting fact: When Prince Charles ascends the throne and becomes King of England, he's expected to give his current title, Prince of Wales, over to Prince William since Will is his heir apparent. This means Kate will ditch "duchess" and become Princess of Wales, making her the first person to use this title since it was held by Princess Diana. Note: Charles’s wife, Duchess Camilla, decided to forgo using the Princess of Wales title out of respect for Di.

It's definite possible that Kate won't use the title either, but royal experts think she most likely will. “It’s hard to see it not happening. I’m sure it’ll be a bit of a bittersweet moment,” a source told The Telegraph in January 2022. “This is her [Diana’s] son and his wife, so in some ways, it will be coming full circle—but it will also be a poignant reminder of what we all lost.”

Formal titles aside, Kate and William are planning to go by their first names as a way to modernize the monarchy and make the vibes a little less formal. A source recently told The Mirror that “they want to be more approachable, less formal, less stuffy, and break away with a lot of the tradition.”

This particular decision comes amid their disastrous royal tour of the Caribbean, which was seen as incredibly out of touch and resulted in protests.

“When the team arrived back in London the couple had a debrief with aides," the source added. "They went over everything and pinpointed specific things that went wrong and how to improve moving forward. The general consensus was that the tour seemed out of date, out of touch, too formal and stuffy. So now it’s more ‘Wills and Kate’ instead of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge… ‘Just call me Wills’ type of thing. They want to try to avoid the bows and curtsies in public, be more approachable, less formal, less stuffy, and break away with a lot of the tradition and focus on a modern monarchy.”

Of course, just because William and Kate want people to call them by their first names doesn't mean their official titles will disappear in more formal settings. So expect them to be called Earl and Countess of Strathearn when they visit Scotland henceforth…at least on paper.

An investigation is under way after a spike in the number of newborn baby deaths in Scotland was recorded for the second time in six months

“At least 18 babies under four weeks old died in March, a rate of 4.6 per 1,000 births. Infant death rates vary widely from month to month, but the increase is larger than expected from chance alone.

It comes after at least 21 babies under four weeks old died in September, a rate of 4.9 per 1,000 births. A preliminary investigation later found the spike was not linked to Covid.

The spikes in September and March are the first to be detected since monitoring of this nature began in July 2017.”

Hammer blow for the SNP's controversial gender reforms as 60% of Scots are against them

20:54, 23 MAY 2022Updated21:33, 23 MAY 2022

Nicola Sturgeon's hotly debated gender reforms have been overwhelmingly rejected by a Scottish Parliament consultation, in what could lead to the sinking of the SNP's flagship bill.

The SNP Government's proposed reforms to the Gender Recognition Act has been shunned by a wave of negative submissions to a Holyrood consultation.

The Scottish Parliament's Equalities, Human Rights and Civil Justice Committee received almost 11,000 submissions when it asked for views on the controversial plans.

Of these 10,800 submissions, 59 per cent were against the reforms citing among other things its threat to women's sports, misogyny and homophobia.

The SNP's Bill was accused of failing to consider the "unintended consequences” of making it much easier for people to change gender and was deemed badly drafted.

Meanwhile, less than two fifths (38 per cent) of those who responded said they agreed with the Bill, while 3 per cent said they did not know.

The overwhelming rejection of the plans from members of the public will make it impossible for the SNP/Green coalition to argue the legislation has popular support.

It is almost unheard of for new laws to go ahead after such a resounding rejection at the consultation stage without major changes being implemented.

The legislation has been under heavy scrutiny since it published proposals which set out to speed up the time it takes for someone to obtain a gender recognition certificate.

The Gender Recognition Reform (Scotland) (GRR) Bill also hopes to cut the length of time a person has to live in their acquired gender before applying from two years to three months - though they would then have to go through a mandatory three-month "reflection period" before confirming if they want to go ahead with their application.

This was rejected by more than 60 per cent of respondents to the consultation.

If passed, it would also lower the age at which trans people can obtain the document from 18 to 16, again more than 60 per cent said they disagreed with this reform.

Single-sex spaces have been a major worry for the women's rights groups that have been dismissed by Nicola Sturgeon and her government, however, the consultation suggests there is an overwhelming concern across the board.
