Natomas honors legacy of slain coach, player Salvador Heredia-Arriaga

Richard Heredia-Arriaga held tightly to his brother’s old No. 58 jersey Friday night. He waved Salvador’s old Natomas maroon at the players kneeling next to the track at Paul Shimada Stadium. He turned and pointed to the crowd.

“That’s my brother,” he said loudly.

Salvador would have approved of the emotion.

The fiery football player and coach atNatomas died at the age of 26 in 2010 when he walked in on a home invasion. On Friday, the school retired Salvador’s number and unveiled a plaque that could become part of a Hall of Fame wall the school hopes to build at the stadium.

Police announced Thursday the arrests of two young men in connection with the killing last month of a Natomas High School football coach looking to give back to the community that raised him.

Police also shed more light on the circumstances surrounding the March 26 home-invasion robbery during which 26-year-old Salvador Heredia-Arriaga was shot:The suspects likely had been after marijuana or money from its sale when the holdup went wrong.

It is another violent crime in which marijuana has been found at the center – and it has law enforcement officers again sounding alarms about what many have argued is among the more harmless drugs to consume.

Three Found Guilty Of Killing Natomas High Coach

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — Three men accused of gunning down a high school football coach last year were all found guilty Thursday, Sacramento County District Attorney Jan Scully said.

Dejon Murray, Kenneth Owens and Maurice Reed were each convicted by three separate juries of first-degree murder for the shooting death of Natomas High School assistant football coach Salvador Heredia-Arriaga on March 26, 2010.

Heredia-Arriaga went to visit his friends at an apartment complex in south Natomas in 2600 block of River Plaza Drive. He was shot and killed by the defendants after he walked by as they were robbing a pot dealer.

Murray, 19, was convicted Thursday, Owens, 24, on Wednesday and Reed on Tuesday. Sentencing for all three is set for Nov. 18.

“Execruciating,” Heredia-Arriaga’s mother, Susan, said of the week in court. “It’s been a long process.”

Heredia-Arriaga played for and graduated from Natomas High and was tutoring students at the school. He was also attending law school.

Six players were awarded scholarships in June in Heredia-Arriaga’s name.

Leland Yee withdraws candidacy for Calif. Secretary of State

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) – The fallout continues just one day after State Senator Leland Yee was arrested on public corruption charges. Both of California's senators are now weighing in on his arrest.

On Thursday, Yee addressed his immediate future. He now says he will withdraw his candidacy for California Secretary of State.

Yee is one of 26 people caught up in an alleged scheme that includes – murder for hire and gun trafficking. There is also Raymond "Shrimp Boy" Chow a former gang memberand Keith Jackson a former school board member in San Francisco.

Yee's political future is definitely uncertain. His attorney says no decision has been made about his Senate seat. But those who have seen the criminal complaint say the depth and breadth of the accusations is astounding.

SAN FRANCISCO (KPIX 5) — Keith Jackson, a man described by the FBI as the central figure in the corruption case involving State Sen. Leland Yee, remains in jail on Monday. Jackson, a former San Francisco School Board president, faces a list of charges involving guns, drugs, and a murder-for-hire plot.

Jackson is described as a well-known “political consultant.” KPIX 5 wanted to know what kind of political work he’s been doing, presumably for Yee. But the more we looked, the less we found.

“I know Keith Jackson, and I know him reasonably well,” former San Francisco Mayor Willie Browntold KPIX 5. “I’m shocked that he has been involved in the kind of things that are contained in this 137-page indictment.”

In those 137 pages (.pdf), Jackson is described as the crucial link between a Chinatown crime syndicate, and a California state senator.

To learn more about Jackson’s role in Bay Area politics, we started by looking at his consulting business.

“He’s not registered as a consulting firm in either the local or state databases where you would find a legitimate consulting firm,” said KPIX 5 political analyst Melissa Griffin.

“This company doesn’t appear to have any records, aside from him claiming to work forJackson Consulting.”

According to campaign records and the FBI, the “Jackson Consulting” firm was based on the third floor of an apartment building in Pacific Heights.

But if Jackson was, in fact, working for State Sen. Yee, the job didn’t pay very well.

It’s not just Willie Brown. KPIX 5 spoke with a number of people in the political world who have known and worked with Keith Jackson over the years. They all described him as a very likable guy and they all say they are stunned at the allegations.
