Countries cancelling COVID vaccine passports for those without booster shots

Israel, Austria, and Croatia are requiring citizens to top up their shots due to failing vaccine protection. The move is not unthinkable in the U.S., where the Biden administration has announced plans for upcoming booster shots.

TEL AVIV (LifeSiteNews) – As data shows vaccines against COVID-19 are failing to offer lasting immune protection, countries including Israel and Austria are cancelling “out-of-date” vaccine passports and demanding that citizens and visitors get booster shots to top up their vaccine status.

‘Updating what it means to be vaccinated’

Israeli data shows Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine efficacy has dropped from a relative risk reduction of 95% during its early trials to just 39% by the end of July, so now the Israeli government is pressuring citizens to take a third “booster” dose, saying its vaccine passports will expire after six months for those who’ve only had two experimental shots.

Israel’s “Green Pass” demonstrating receipt of two doses of Pfizer’s vaccine – which allows citizens to participate in ordinary activities including dining out, going to the gym, attending conference and entertainment venues – will now be linked to the timing of their last dose of vaccine or booster shot.

“We are updating what it means to be vaccinated,” Israel’s coronavirus czar, Salman Zarka, told reporters Sunday at a press conference.

Failing vaccines

“This is simply because, in terms of its effectiveness, the vaccine is valid only for a period of five or six months. After about half a year, you have to get a third dose. Otherwise, the vaccine loses its power,” Health Minister Nitzan Horowitz said just days earlier, on August 24, when he warned that his government was considering canceling citizens’ Green Passes if they had not received a third dose of vaccine.

“The Green Pass testifies that a person is safe in a certain way. So the moment we know that the vaccine loses its effectiveness after a certain period, there’s no justification for giving a Green Pass to someone who hasn’t gotten another dose,” Horowitz said.

Zarka attempted to put a more positive spin on the requirement of extra experimental injections for Israeli citizens who had been assured the vaccine was “95% effective” just months earlier, presenting the failure of the first two doses in terms of the positive benefits of a third shot and highlighting research showing that an extra dose boosts protection by 10 times 12 days following the injection. Israel on August 4 introduced the third “booster shot” of Pfizer’s vaccine, which has been administered to more than 2.1 million of the country’s 9.3 million residents as of August 30.

Passport expired

Austria and Croatia were the first countries to announce in August that they would be attaching shelf lives to previous inoculations. They are accepting COVID vaccine passports from travelers who received their second dose no more than 270 days before arriving at their borders.

Fully vaccinated people are extended the privilege to enter the country without the required 10-day quarantine and PCR testing to the unvaccinated, but now those who have had two vaccine shots are not considered fully vaccinated unless it is within the nine-month time frame.

The move is not unthinkable for America as well, since Joe Biden said last week that he and White House COVID advisor Anthony Fauci were discussing the possibility of COVID vaccine booster shots every five months.

We’ve been hearing a lot of speculation that the Afghan debacle is more than it seems – that rather than being a typical outcome of activity by some of the dumbest, most ill-informed, and most blinkered individuals ever to occupy places in the U.S government, it is instead a dark, convoluted conspiracy aimed at some goal sinister beyond words.

Some of this is from the usual suspects who see conspiracies every time a cat falls out of a tree, and some by more reputable people. The core concept here can be expressed simply: “There has to be something else going on. Nobody could be that stupid.”

It’s easy to see where such a conclusion comes from. Scientists have warned the coronavirus will keep evolving as it spreads around the world, and there are now multiple new variants being watched closely by global research teams.

One of those, B.1.621, also known as mu, has been dubbed the latest variant of interest by the World Health Organization (WHO). Another, C.1.2, is the subject of headline-making new research exploring how it behaves. Other variants are likely waiting in the wings, yet to be detected.

So why do these new variants matter, what are they capable of, and how much should Canadians care?

Right now, the highly-contagious delta variant — deemed a variant of concern by the WHO back in May — is dominating Canada's COVID-19 cases, making up more than 90 per cent of reported recent infections according to federal data.

But that doesn't mean other emerging variants don't warrant close observation.

"Looking at this virus, it's obvious that we will have new variants," said Alyson Kelvin, a virologist at the Vaccine and Infectious Disease Organization (VIDO) at the University of Saskatchewan.

"What we need to do is to be ready for identifying cases … as well as other variants that are inevitably going to start emerging around the world."

What is the B.1.621 — or mu — variant?

B.1.621 is the latest variant of interest, according to the WHO, and was given the designation — and a catchier Greek alphabet-based name, "mu" — on August 30.

"The mu variant has a constellation of mutations that indicate potential properties of immune escape," reads the WHO's latest weekly epidemiological update.

That means those with some level of immunity to earlier strains, either by previous infection or vaccination, might be susceptible to infection from mu — but that's only according to preliminary data and "needs to be confirmed by further studies," the update continued.

The variant was first detected in Colombia back in January, and since then, the country has experienced hundreds of cases and the variant has also been reported in 39 other countries around the world.

What is the C.1.2 variant?

The variant C.1.2 isn't deemed a variant of interest or concern yet by the WHO, but researchers are pushing the organization to watch it closely.

A team of scientists from South Africa detected the new variant, which was first observed in May and has since spread to seven other countries in Africa, Europe, Asia and Oceania, according to a preprint study that hasn't yet been peer-reviewed.

"It's still not clear where this came from," noted Dr. Zain Chagla, an infectious diseases specialist with McMaster University in Hamilton. "It was first identified in South Africa but people need to know that South Africa has actually quite good sequencing networks and so it may not be the origin."

Richard Lessells, an infectious disease specialist and one of the authors of the research on C.1.2, told Reuters the variant may have even more immune-evasion properties than delta, based on its pattern of mutations, and that the findings had been flagged to the WHO.

However, it's not known yet if the variant is actually more contagious, or more capable of evading the immunity provided by either vaccines or a prior coronavirus infection.

"These things need time to see," Chagla said. "Delta is incredibly fit, and incredibly virulent and replaces [other strains] aggressively. We still haven't seen suggestions of this yet [with C.1.2]."

Ok, you are talking like you are in windows, so open a command prompt by right clicking on start icon, select run, type in cmd and press enter. The command prompt should start in your user folder for the account you are logged in as, you should be able to enter "cd docu" hit tab and it will probably complete to "cd Documents", if it completes to other stuff keep hitting tab until you get the right one, or just do it manually, now in here enter "mkdir scripts" that will create a new folder under documents, now "cd scripts" then "notepad image.py" you should be asked to create it. Chapter 1 identifies more than 250 published research collaborations between scholars based in the United States and counterparts from seven universities in the People’s Republic of China (PRC) that are integral to that nation’s defense research and industrial base.

The director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) high-lighted these gaps in a 2018 letter addressed to more than ten thousand institutions in which he expressed concern that some recipients of NIH research funding had diverted IP in grant applications or from NIH-funded research to other countries; shared confidential grant application information with others, including foreign entities, or attempted to influence funding decisions; and failed to disclose substantial resources from foreign governments, thereby distorting decisions about the appropriate use of NIH funds.
