Wopke Hoekstra is a former McKinsey & Co. partner with a law degree and an MBA.. He entered politics in 2011, winning election to the Netherlands’ Senate and taking a leading role in the center-right Christian Democratic Appeal (CDA) party.

Hoekstra continued to work for McKinsey while serving in Parliament on various Senate committees including finance, foreign affairs, and security and justice. He left the consulting firm when Prime Minister Mark Rutte appointed him minister of finance in October 2017.

Leaked documents show that in 2009, Hoekstra obtained shares in an offshore company, Candace Management Ltd., based in the British Virgin Islands. He acquired more shares in 2013 and 2014, while he was a senator.

Other shareholders, with Hoekstra, in Candace Management include several former and current executives of ABN AMRO Bank, one of the largest banks in the Netherlands. The group includes Tom de Swaan, chairman of the supervisory board for ABN AMRO Bank NV, and Jeroen Harderwijk, a former ABN AMRO director and Candace Management’s largest shareholder. De Swaan was also a non-executive board member for the Financial Services Authority in the U.K.

In 2003, Harderwijk co-founded a high-end safari firm, Asilia Africa, also known as Africanspirit Group. In 2019, Conde Nast Traveler said the safari company was “shaking up the status quo” by hiring women as guides and camp managers.” The article described Harderwijk as Asilia’s managing director.

Candace Management owns 25% of African Spirit Group, and NorFund, a Norwegian government investment fund, owns 32%.

In an email to ICIJ, Hoekstra said he sold his shares in Candace one week before becoming minister of finance.

Records show that as of May 31, 2017, Hoekstra held 627 shares in Candace Management; de Swaan had more than 1,500 shares; and Harderwijk owned more than 15,300.

The case of Julian Assange is a deeply political one. Assange has remained in Belmarsh for the last two years, and continues to be treated as the state treats dangerous, violent people convicted of the worst crimes.

The truth is that Assange is dangerous, not to ordinary, working people, but to the establishment and to Western imperialism. Assange’s only offence is his crucial work uncovering the war crimes of the West in Afghanistan and Iraq, attempting to hold the US government to account in the process.

He has endured almost a decade of incarceration, having first sought refuge in the Ecuadorian embassy in London in 2012 and since spent two years in Belmarsh, the majority in solitary confinement.

Since the pandemic, Assange has faced even more restrictions and has been largely unable to speak to anyone aside from his lawyer, including his family and young children. As it stands, Assange is in limbo, waiting for the US to appeal District Judge Vanessa Baraitser’s decision to block his extradition to the US. This appeal will begin at the end of October and will entail yet another legal battle in which Assange’s character is questioned and criticised by two of the most powerful establishments in the world.

His lawyers and supporters have been arguing for the best part of a decade, any extradition to the US would be severely detrimental to Assange’s mental and physical health. He would face up to 175 years in prison if found guilty in the US – a life sentence.

The last two years in solitary confinement in Belmarsh have been nothing short of torture to Assange, and it is beyond cruel that anyone should have to live a life in a tiny concrete box. It is beyond the pale that Assange has had to do this without ever being found guilty.

The reality is that the establishment does not want us to feel any sympathy for Julian Assange, as the repeated attacks on everything from his personality to personal hygiene over the last decade have proven. It would be very easy to believe Assange as nothing but a slightly eccentric but unlucky whistle blower, but we must view the attacks on his work as attacks on journalism. Truth is difficult to find in a world of cover-ups, war crimes and government lies, but the truth is paramount and all of us owe something to Julian Assange for uncovering it.

Op 19 januari 1945 wordt Raoul Wallenberg in Boedapest gearresteerd door SMERSH ('dood aan de spionnen'), de militaire contra-spionagedienst van de Sovjets. Dat bemoeienis van SMERSH duidt op verdenking van spionage en dat was niet onlogisch. Raoul was niet zomaar een gevangene; het Kremlin was over zijn gevangenschap geïnformeerd en zeker is dat ten minste minister van Buitenlandse Zaken Molotov, de chef van de KGB en de toenmalige minister voor Staatsveiligheid zich met zijn geval hebben bemoeid. Pas in februari 1957 komt Moskou met het bericht dat Wallenberg op 17 juli 1947 aan een hartaanval in de Moskouse Ljoebjanka-gevangenis was overleden. Vermoedelijk is hij doodgeschoten en gecremeerd om de sporen van de executie uit te wissen.

Uit het schaarse archiefmateriaal dat inmiddels in Rusland boven water is gekomen, worden we helaas niets wijzer over de motivatie om hem voorgoed vast te houden. Hebben de Russen in die tweeëneenhalf jaar tussen arrestatie en overlijden niet het doel bereikt dat ze bij zijn arrestatie voor ogen hebben gehad? Volgens Soedoplatov probeerde de KGB hem als agent te recruteren om zo de KGB van nog meer informatie over Jacob en Marcus te voorzien. Ook zijn verblijf in de Ljoebjanka zou daarop duiden, want volgens de KGB-generaal voor 'speciale operaties' stonden de gevangenen daar op de nominatie om te worden aangeworven óf te worden geliquideerd. Ook is mogelijk dat hij een pion was in de Amerikaans-Russische strijd om de medewerking van Jacob en Marcus: de ABC-affaire versus het miljardenkrediet. Of was het een simpele wraakoefening voor wat Jacob en Marcus tijdens de oorlog hadden aangericht? De conclusie lijkt onontkoombaar dat Raouls verdwijning in direct verband staat met de operaties van het Wallenberg-concern tijdens de oorlog.

De Wallenberg-broers hebben zich nooit voor zijn vrijlating ingespannen en het is maar de vraag of ze op zijn terugkeer zaten te wachten. Waarom worden de zakentalenten van Raoul en zijn onmiskenbare connecties met de Wallenberg-sfeer tot op de dag van vandaag zo hardnekkig ontkend?

Na de oorlog kreeg uitsluitend zijn werk voor de WRF aandacht. Omdat Raoul uit Zweden kwam, werd zijn humanitaire werk steeds meer vereenzelvigd met zijn geboorteland. Raoul Wallenberg is uitgegroeid tot de beschermheilige van zijn geboorteland en de personificatie van een beleid dat in werkelijkheid nooit heeft bestaan. Dankzij hem ontstond het beeld dat Zweden synoniem was met oprechte neutraliteit en het was ook aan hem te danken dat Zweden werd gezien als een volk dat op de bres had gestaan voor bedreigde joden.

Zweden heeft zich dat imago graag laten aanleunen, maar heeft die beeldvorming niet actief bevorderd. Hoe kon het ook? Het tegendeel is waar. Net als Zwitserland stuurden de Zweden de meeste joden, behalve Noorse en Deense, tot ongeveer 1944-1945 aan de grens terug. De 'J' die de Duitsers in de passen van joden stempelden, had de instemming van de Zweedse regering en was zelfs (mede) op haar aandringen tot stand gekomen, omdat op die manier joden aan de grens sneller konden worden geïdentificeerd.

Over de periode 1941-1944 - van Raouls aantreden in Meropa tot aan zijn vertrek naar Boedapest - is verrassend weinig bekend. Onderzoek naar de activiteiten van Raoul over die periode zou nieuwe feiten over de handel en wandel van het Wallenberg concern (en dat van de Zweedse overheid) kunnen opleveren. Waarschijnlijk zit geen van beide partijen daarop te wachten en is dat de reden dat de archieven van Buitenlandse Zaken, de Säpo (veiligheidsdienst) en de militaire inlichtingendienst nog steeds (deels) gesloten blijven. Ook de familie Wallenberg wil van toegang tot hun archieven niets weten, ook al heeft ze publiekelijk het tegendeel beweerd. De Tweede Wereldoorlog kan nog steeds, ook al behoort ze inmiddels meer dan een halve eeuw tot de geschiedenis, reputaties aantasten of vernietigen.

How Western Press Has Kept Silent For Years on War in Donbass & Neo-Nazism in Ukraine

Russia on 24 February launched a "special operation" in Donbass aimed at protecting Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics (DPR and LPR), which were recognised as independent entities by Moscow on 21 February. The Western media called the operation "an invasion" they have long warned about.

The "Russia invasion" narrative wasn't the West's "prophecy" but rather a cover-up for a new attempt to return the breakaway Donetsk and Lugansk republics by force to Ukraine, according to George Eliason, an American investigative journalist who lives and works in Donbass. Bringing back Donbass would have paved the way for Ukraine's NATO membership: in accordance with the alliance's rules, a country having territorial disputes cannot be admitted to the bloc.

"First of all, Zelensky ordered the attack during a speech a few weeks ago," Eliason says. "He made it very clear Ukraine's buildup was for that purpose."

By December 2021, the Kiev government had amassed up to 125,000 troops along the contact line with the Donbass republics. At the same time, OSCE reported more frequent use of heavy weapons, prohibited under the Minsk Agreements, by the Ukrainian Armed Forces against the breakaway regions.

The Western smoke-and-mirrors media campaign speculating about Russia's "imminent invasion" began in spring 2021, according to the investigative journalist. The mainstream press claimed that Russia was about to invade Ukraine.

"This is a huge breach in what constitutes a fact in the media. Published satellite images of Russian army positions accompanying these news reports showed the Russian army on bases over a day's travel away. In real terms this translated into 160 miles to 460 miles from the border," says Eliason, stressing that the Russian army could hardly launch a surprise land attack from these positions.

In November 2021, the "Russian invasion narrative" caught its second breath with the mainstream press and prominent social media influencers publishing maps and "false flag" scenarios of the supposed assault.

Former US Ambassador to Russia Michael McFaul launched nothing short of a tweet storm claiming that Ukrainian civilians will fight to the bitter end against Russian "occupiers". For his part, Hollywood star Sean Penn arrived in Ukraine to film a documentary about "Russian aggression."

It was a coordinated infowar operation aimed at presenting Russia's possible reaction to Ukraine's offensive against Donbass as a full-fledged invasion, according to Eliason. Ukrainian President Volodymur Zelensky was also pushing the Information Operation narrative worked out for him by US infowar consultants, says the investigative journalist.

Invisible War in Donbass

At the same time, the Western mainstream media have kept silence for years about the shelling of the Donetsk and Lugansk Republics by the Ukrainian government forces and neo-Nazi battalions.

Just a limited number of independent American and European journalists and freelance photographers have been working in the Donbass region, chronicling the invisible war of the Ukrainian government against its own people. According to the UN, over 13,000 have been killed in the region since the Maidan coup d'etat of February 2014.

"The barrage has been a constant feature in both republics for the last eight years," says Eliason. "The primary targets have always been civilian housing and infrastructure."

Over the past several weeks the Ukrainian military had intensified bombardment of the Donbass region, prompting the leadership of the DPR and LPR to launch an evacuation of children and elderly people to Russia. However, "Ukrainian spec ops groups have been targeting evacuees leaving to Russia with mines and shells," says Eliason.

The US openly dismissed Russia's warnings about the ongoing genocide of Russian-speakers and crimes against humanity in Eastern Ukraine. For his part, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz claimed at the annual Munich Security Conference on 19 February that it is "really ridiculous" to say that "there is something like genocide" in Donbass.

Coming this from the German chancellor is "scandalous but expected," says Eliason. By turning a blind eye to crimes committed by Ukrainian military and neo-Nazi militias in Eastern Ukraine, the Scholz-led coalition is indirectly supporting "what amounts to second generation 1930s-40s political Nazi thought" in Ukraine, according to the investigative journalist.

De-Nazification

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated on Thursday that Russia started a military operation to protect Donbass in order to clear the country of Nazis. "Ideally, it is necessary to liberate Ukraine, clear it of Nazis, as well as pro-Nazi people and ideology," Peskov told reporters.

In the wake of the 2014 Maidan coup, a number of corporate media sources questioned the role of Ukraine neo-Nazi groups in the nation's political life but very then it was largely scratched from the Western mainstream narrative.

In May 2018, Stephen F. Cohen, an influential American historian on Russia, warned in his op-ed for The Nation that "neo-fascists play an important official or tolerated role in the US-backed Ukraine." Back in 2017, the Hill quoted Azov's commander, Andriy Biletsky, as saying that the mission of Ukraine is to "lead the White Races of the world in a final crusade for their survival … against the Semite-led Untermenschen."

What's more, the rehabilitation of neo-Nazism in Ukraine has been tolerated by successive American administrations since the time of the 2005 "Orange Revolution" and continued to thrive, under George Bush, Barack Obama, and Donald Trump, according to Cohen.

The administration of Joseph Biden, who used to be Obama's appointee in Ukraine, went even further, by providing tonnes of weapons and training to the Ukrainian military as the latter concentrated along the line of contact with Donbass. On 16 December 2021, the UN General Assembly discussed a resolution that called for combating the glorification of Nazism, neo-Nazism and other practices fuelling racism and xenophobia. The only two countries that voted against it were the US and Ukraine.
