By shoving that fucking test stick up there, it weakens the barrier and might even be used to implant targeted virus.

I'm still trying to find the study I was reading. It was first proposed for inclusion in antivirals so that the GO edges would physically damage the viruses making them unable to function by slicing into them.
There would be zero control and it could possible slice into health tissue causing microinjuries, exacerbating the inflammatory response.
