"are" is correct. Just replace "is" by "are" and you're perfect grammatically and also in matching the original phrase.

 

"data" is a plural noun anyway, the singular is "datum". That's true in Latin, so it's also true when we borrow it for English, although it's also considered correct to use "data" as singular, because of PC English teachers who have rebelled against classical subjects …

They've had outside monarchs though. I just heard today that the Hanover monarchs George 1 and George 2 were Germans, didn't speak English, and preferred spending their time in Germany. (Hence delegated day to day stuff to the PM, how the PM became so important.) The third Hanover, George 3, was an incredible narcissist but at least he spoke English. He's the one the USA declared independence from.
