Nobel Prize in Chemistry goes to molecule-making duo=

Their research helped develop new drugs and made chemistry greener.

Scottish-born David MacMillan and German Bernard List were awarded this year’s Nobel Prize in Chemistry for creating a new tool for molecular construction, organocatalysis, that has had a big impact on pharmaceutical research. It’s the third Nobel awarded so far this year after Medicine and Physics.

Many industries rely on chemists to build molecules that can form durable materials, store energy in batteries and stop the progression of diseases. This requires catalysts, substances that control and accelerate chemical reactions. Even our body has plenty of catalysts in the form of enzymes, shaping the many molecules that are needed for life.

Researchers used to think that there were only two types of catalysts, metals and enzymes. But List and Macmillan showed this wasn’t necessarily the case. Instead, they created a third type of catalysis known as asymmetric organocatalysis. It’s a “simple and ingenious concept”, Johan Åqvist of the Nobel Committee for Chemistry said.

Looking into the research

When researching catalytic antibodies, List started to think about how enzymes work. They are big molecules built from amino acids, with a significant proportion that also have metals that drive chemical processes. But many enzymes can catalyze chemical reactions without metals, driven instead by one or a few amino acids in the enzyme.

This is when List asked himself whether amino acids had to be part of an enzyme so to catalyze a chemical reaction or if a single amino acid could do the same job. He recalledprevious research in the 1970s with an amino acid called proline was used as a catalyst. But he assumed this didn’t work well as he couldn’t find further studies.

Still, he tested if proline could catalyze an aldol reaction, in which carbon atoms from different molecules are linked together. It worked straight away. He proved proline is an efficient catalyst and that this amino acid can drive asymmetric catalysis. Proline is in fact a dream tool for chemists – simple, cheap, and environmentally friendly.

MacMillan realized that catalysts weren’t much used in industry and he assumed this was because sensitive metals were too difficult and expensive. He realized that he needed to rethink his whole approach and decided to stop looking at metals. Instead, he focused on designing simple organic molecules that could accommodate electrons.

He tested the molecules’ ability to drive a Diels-Alder reaction, used by chemists to build rings of carbon atoms. It worked perfectly. Some of the molecules were also very good at asymmetric catalysis. He then came up with the name organocatalysis to describe how chemical reactions could be catalyzed using small organic molecules.

A new concept for catalysis

List and Macmillan (alongside other researchers) went on to design many cheap and stable organocatalysts which can be used to drive many chemical reactions. These have led to more efficient molecular constructions, such as with the strychnine molecule. It first required 29 different chemical reactions but now it’s built-in just 12 steps thanks to organocatalysis.

This has also had a big impact on pharmaceutical research. Until chemists could do asymmetric catalysis, many pharmaceuticals contained both mirror images of a molecule. One was active, while the other could have unwanted effects.Now, thanks to organocatalysis, researchers can produce big volumes of asymmetric molecules much simpler.

“Benjamin List and David MacMillan remain leaders in the field, and have shown that organic catalysts can be used to drive multitudes of chemical reactions. Using these reactions, researchers can now more efficiently construct anything from new pharmaceuticals to molecules that can capture light in solar cells,” the Nobel academy wrote in a statement.

Previous winners in chemistry include Marie Curie and Fredick Sanger, who won twice. Last year’s winners were Emmanuelle Charpentier and Jennifer Dounda forcreating genetic “scissors” that can edit DNA.

But those written posts, absolutely did not sound like a disciplined man in his mid or late 30s, it sounded like something a 20s something SJW would say (my generation). Every part of the “rant against Trump” seems out of character for a military officer, but additionally in the writing, he’s criticizing other military leaders and past leaders on all past war strategies and wars, saying“my generation” many times. No one in their mid to late 30s with any kind of self discipline says “my generation” once, but his writing said it like 4x.

Its been reported but not confirmed he was born in 1980. See below, if he graduated from university he would have been about 22 or 23 at that time , and then he joined the military for 17 years so this would make him closer to 37-39.

This whole story smells like BS to me and since he cannot speak out now, being released from thd brig and under gag order, he cannot defend himself, its too much of a set up. Too convenient!

Well, that's it. I have completed my shift as the great American cliché. In the spirit of what turned out to be my last New Year's letter, my wild and crazy life has again taken a new, unexpected turn with my shocking and unexpected, yet fabulous, exit. Yes, I have joined the likes of Princess Diana, John Belushi, and Steve Irwin the Crocodile Hunter in leaving while still at the top of my game as an iconic superhero who seemed almost too good to be true.

It was a good run. No, a great run, but I can't take all the credit. Northern Michigan University and my Lambda Chi Alpha brothers, Wayne State University Medical School, The United States Army, colleagues, various celebrities, random cartoon characters, people who make memes, Russians and other friends and family all contributed. As you know, my wife, Amy, and my kids Joey (14), Evelyn (13), and Sylvia (10) are the absolute best. Please take good care of them like the priceless treasures they are.

I will admit that I originally got married for the husband jokes and had kids for the dad jokes. It did not disappoint. The jokes I mean, but Amy and the kids were pretty good too. Going to school events, dance competitions, and eight zillion hockey practices at the crack of dawn really makes a man's life worthwhile. I also saw some other delightful things in my time here - Hawaiian volcanoes, Egyptian pyramids, and even the advent of air fryers. I will say, it was magical, all of it.

In case you've heard the rumors, I did dabble in a few other things along the way during my 48 years, like serving my country in combat on two separate tours, earning the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and saving countless lives as an accomplished surgeon and MD. Oh, there was also that whole, fulfilling, "cosmetic and reconstructive surgery" stint too. Yada, yada, yada. Let's talk about my real legacy, though…The dad jokes, the New Year's letters, the Facebook memes. What was I to this world if not a beacon of light shining upon those who couldn't scan the internet for their own hilarious and entertaining comic relief? I guess what I am trying to say is that you're welcome and you owe me big time.

I know it's impossible to believe, but I, the Ginger God of Surgery and Shenanigans, have fought my last cow (you're welcome Tim) and ridden off into the glorious sunset after re-enlisting with a new unit. Due to the unknown and cosmic nature of my next mission, this will be our last communication. It will self-destruct in five minutes. My whereabouts are now top secret, but let's just say I have made some new friends by the names of Elvis and Kenny. The Church of Tom is closed for business, but please continue to worship me, light candles, and send money. You know the deal.

LtCol Scheller stated in his first video that he was willing to lose his job, his retirement, and his family’s stability to stand for accountability. And he did lose all three of those things.
