Study: Mixing and Matching COVID-19 Booster Shots Is Effective, SafeThe study comes as the Food and Drug Administration is mulling over what to do about booster shots for Moderna and Johnson & Johnson recipients.Every combination of mixing and matching COVID-19 booster shots increased immune response without safety concerns, according to preliminary data from a National Institutes of Health study.
The mix-and-match method seemed to give the biggest boost to Johnson & Johnson recipients who get their second shot from Moderna or Pfizer.
The study, which has not been peer reviewed, found that those who got the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines originally and got either drugmaker's booster dose had similar immune responses.
However, researchers said that the study was "not designed to directly compare responses between different booster regimens."
The study comes as the Food and Drug Administration is mulling over what to do about booster shots for Moderna and J&J recipients. The extra dose was authorized for certain populations who received Pfizer's coronavirus vaccine last month.
The FDA's vaccine advisory committee meets on Thursday to discuss Moderna's potential booster shots and Friday to talk about the likelihood of another J&J dose. The experts will also discuss mixing and matching booster doses.
Data released by the FDA on Wednesday cited shortcomings in J&J's booster data, likely setting up the Friday meeting to address many questions.
Health officials say that all coronavirus vaccines still provide a high level of protection despite concern that protection against mild infection could be waning.
"Although the vaccines currently approved or available under [emergency use authorization] in the U.S. provide high levels of protection against severe illness and death, the increased transmission of the Delta variant resulted in increasing numbers of breakthrough infections in fully vaccinated individuals," study authors wrote.

Sheesh… now they are saying it's ok to mix the different vaccines. WTH?
