A marine and air search is underway for a boat missing off Tasmania's north-west coast.

Police say the 17ft yellow and white Caribbean half cab vessel, with three people on board, left around midday yesterday morning and was supposed to return from a trip within three to four hours.

About 5:35pm, police received a call from a family member of one of the passengers, raising the alarm.

Police have confirmed the three people on board are Isaiah Dixon, Thomas Courto and Bree-Anna Thomas, all from the West Coast.

Tasmania Police search and rescue, Australian Maritime Safety and Surf Life Saving are now searching the Bass Strait between Wynyard and Rocky Cape.

They have deployed significant resources, including multiple police vessels and an aircraft from Victoria.

Winds are moderate to fresh in the search area, blowing east to south-easterly at 15 to 25 knots.

Police are asking anyone who has had contact with the three people on the boat since 3pm yesterday, or knows their intended movements or location, to contact them.

Police are expected to hold a press conference in Devonport at 1:30pm.
