Communists come from ALL groups but there's no question of the most powerful influence came from Communists fleeing Germany to the US which welcomed them with open arms – especially pedowood & "academia":

Gentleman's Agreement is a 1947 American drama film based on Laura Z. Hobson's best-selling 1947 novel of the same name.
