Italy Arrests 103 in Anti-Mafia Operations Across the Country

Italian authorities arrested 103 suspects in a sweeping anti-Mafia operation carried out last week across the country, the Italian state-run news service, ANSA reported.

“The suspects are accused of crimes including mafia association, criminal association for the sale of drugs, drug dealing, extortion, kidnapping and robbery,” the report said. “One of the biggest operations took place in Latina, a city between Naples and Rome, where restrictive measures were imposed on 33 people.”

A major agricultural center, Latina was reported to be the site of large scale Mafia-run farms, where enslaved or exploited immigrants work under inhumane conditions, according to an article published by the Nation Nigeria in September.

The outlet claimed that some 30,000 Sikh workers largely from India were found to be laboring under exploitative conditions on farms in the area, a recent investigation by Latina Police found, according to the outlet.

Other suspects were arrested in Catanzaro, L'Aquila, Salerno, Lecco, Terni, Taranto, Genoa and Vicenza.

The round up comes amidst one of the biggest anti-mafia trials in Italian history.

Some 325 suspected members of ‘Ndrangheta, Italy’s largest and most powerful organized crime syndicate, are being tried in what has been called a “maxi-trial,” reminiscent of the sweeping affairs of the 1980s and 90s which first cracked the power of Cosa Nostra, the Sicilian Mafia.

UN official calls out Elon Musk to help end starvation with $6B check. Musk responds, adds one stipulation.

Elon Musk, the world's richest man whose net worth is close to $300 billion, said Sunday that he would cut a check to help end world hunger.

Musk, however, placed a stipulation on his offer that will probably not be well received by the organization that called him out.

What is the background?

Last week, David Beasley, the director of the United Nations' World Food Programme, told CNN that a $6 billion donation from the world's top billionaires — like Musk or Amazon founder Jeff Bezos — could immediately save 42 million people from starvation.

"The governments are tapped out. This is why and this is when the billionaires need to step up now on a one-time basis: Six billion dollars to help 42 million people that are literally going to die if we don't reach them," Beasley said.

"It's not complicated. I'm not asking them to do this every day, every week, every year," Beasley continued. "Just help me with them, one time. That's a $6 billion price tag."

Beasley noted that Bezos and Musk made far more than $6 billion since the pandemic began last year and said Musk's net worth recently increased by $6 billion in a single day.

"The top 400 billionaires in the United States, the net worth increase was $1.8 trillion in the past year," Beasley said. "All I'm asking for is .36% of your net worth increase. I'm for people making money, but God knows I'm all for you helping people who are in great need right now. The world is in trouble."

"Wake up, smell the coffee, and help!" Beasley pleaded.

What did Musk say?

In response, Musk said he would liquidate $6 billion worth of Tesla stock to finance Beasley's request. However, Musk added that the U.N. would need to prove that every penny donated went toward feeding people.

"If WFP can describe on this Twitter thread exactly how $6B will solve world hunger, I will sell Tesla stock right now and do it," Musk said. "But it must be open source accounting, so the public sees precisely how the money is spent."

In response, Beasley said his comments were mischaracterized. In fact, $6 billion would not solve world hunger, he said.

"Headline not accurate," Beasley responded. "$6B will not solve world hunger, but it WILL prevent geopolitical instability, mass migration and save 42 million people on the brink of starvation. An unprecedented crisis and a perfect storm due to Covid/conflict/climate crises."

Musk responded by reaffirming his commitment to transparency.

"Please publish your current & proposed spending in detail so people can see exactly where money goes," Musk said. "Sunlight is a wonderful thing."

The campaign of Democrat candidate for Virginia governor Terry McAuliffe abruptly canceled an election eve rally in Virginia Beach set for 12:45 p.m. Monday, offering no reason as to why. McAuliffe has struggled to draw enthusiastic crowds as the rival Republican candidate Glenn Youngkin has held large, boisterous rallies of supporters across the state. Youngkin has a rally scheduled for Monday evening in Virginia Beach.

Republican Glenn Youngkin and Democrat Terry McAuliffe were both initially scheduled to hold events in Virginia Beach on Monday, Nov. 1, but a spokesperson for McAuliffe said he would no longer be having one in Hampton Roads.

Instead, McAuliffe will be campaigning today in a different portion of the state.

Youngkin is still on schedule to host a rally today at Neptune’s Park, which is located on Atlantic Avenue, at 5 p.m.

Queensland records zero community COVID-19 cases as thousands of unvaccinated health workers suspended

Queensland's Health Minister says she is not concerned about widespread disruption in the state's hospital system after the suspension of thousands of health workers who have not been vaccinated against COVID-19.

Key points:

The state has again recorded no new community cases

More than 4,000 unvaccinated health workers will be issued show-case notices today

They face losing their job if they can't provide a valid reason for refusing the mandate

It comes as Queensland recorded zero new community cases of COVID-19 and one new positive case in hotel quarantine — a returned overseas traveller from Ukraine.

The Health Department had set a deadline for the start of this month for workers to receive two doses of a COVID-19 vaccination or be shut out of the workplace.

Queensland Health Minister Yvette D'Ath said more than 92 per cent of staff had already been vaccinated.

But more than 7,000 staff were yet to confirm their vaccination status, with about 4,000 to receive show-cause notices and be suspended on full-pay.

"We have a number of staff who will now go through a show-cause process and we will put in place measures to manage any workforce shortages that might occur," Ms D'Ath said.

Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett and French President Emmanuel Macron agreed on Monday to deal "discreetly" with the alleged hacking by Israeli firm NSO's spyware on French targets, including the president himself, an Israeli source said.

The company's Pegasus software was reportedly used to surveil French phones, with Macron on a Moroccan list of targets, according to Le Monde.

"It was agreed between the leaders that the subject will continue to be handled discreetly and professionally, and with the spirit of transparency between the two sides," the unnamed official said.

Billionaire Michael Bloomberg Launches Effort to Stop Coal Use in 25 Countries

Billionaire businessman and former US presidential candidate Michael Bloomberg launched new efforts to end the use of coal in 25 countries in an attempt to combat climate change and transition to clean energy, Bloomberg Philanthropies said in a statement on Monday.

“Over the last decade, Bloomberg Philanthropies has helped shut down two-thirds of coal-fired power plants in the US and half in Europe - and that work continues. But around the world, too many coal plants are driving climate change and making people sick, so we are expanding our efforts to 25 more countries and setting an ambitious new goal: working to close a quarter of the world’s coal plants by 2025 and cancel all proposed coal plants by that year, too,” the statement said.

The proposed campaign would work to close one-quarter of the world’s 2,445 remaining coal plants and stop all 519 proposed ones by 2025, the statement said.

The announcement came at the UN Climate Change Conference in Glasgow, where the world leaders are currently meeting to discuss the international climate agenda.

Bloomberg Philanthropies will try to help end coal power and enable clean energy transition by convening private companies, public sector entities, philanthropy and non-governmental organizations to deliver a whole-of-society response, the statement said.

Judge Suspends Lori Lightfoot’s Deadline For Chicago Police Officers to be Vaccinated Against Covid-19

A Cook County Judge on Monday suspended Mayor Lori Lightfoot’s December 31 deadline for Chicago police officers to be vaccinated against Covid.

As TGP reported, Chicago upped its battle with police officers over the mandated COVID vaccine, issuing a statement recently threatening the retirement benefits of officers who opt to retire from the force rather than submit to Mayor Lori Lightfoot’s COVID vaccine mandate and reporting system.

Lightfoot ordered back in August that all city employees must be vaccinated by October 15. The deadline was later modified, after objections by the police union, to the end of the year but with a proviso that unvaccinated workers submit to twice-weekly testing at their own expense. All workers must report their vaccine status through an online portal starting this Friday or face being put on no-pay status.

The Associated Press reported:

A judge on Monday suspended a Dec. 31 deadline for Chicago police officers to be vaccinated against COVID-19 but didn’t interfere with a requirement that they be regularly tested.

Disputes over vaccinations should be handled as a labor grievance with an arbitrator, Cook County Judge Raymond Mitchell said.

“The effect of this order is to send these parties back to the bargaining table and to promote labor peace by allowing them to pursue” remedies under Illinois law, Mitchell said.

The grievance process could last months, the city said last week.

Officers who haven’t been vaccinated still must be tested twice a week under city policy. Officers also can lose work and pay if they don’t disclose their vaccine status.

In the meantime Indiana is recruiting Chicago cops disgruntled by Lightfoot’s Covid vaccine mandate.
