The reason is the airlines were sued into not requiring weigh-ins and the FAs sued to not be let go as they aged. Now it is a career.
The same thing basically happened at the Rio in Las Vegas. Lawfag here and I remember MGM and RIO had the hottest cocktail waitresses. It was a known fact. They made huge amounts of money. One worked at a law firm part time and had a brand new BMW convertible and she was 21. As I digress, the Rio could not get the cocktail waitresses to leave back in 1997 because they were making $100K plus a year. Where else could they make that money other than turning tricks. They were becoming older and fatter after having several kids, etc. You know the drill. The RIO was told they would be sued if they fired them to hire younger and sexier so they devised a way through their employment attorneys to fire all of them by eliminating the position and instead open slots for beveragetainers. You had to serve cocktails and during the shift you had to be able to dance/sing on stages. They all had to re-apply for the new jobs. Let’s just say most could not sing/dance. Hence, sexy, young help was back working at the Rio.
