Instagram Chief to Testify in US Congress on Harm to Youth From Platform, Report Says

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) - The CEO of Instagram, Adam Mosseri, will appear before the US Senate, the upper chamber of the Congress, in the second week of December for the first time and testify regarding reports on the negative influence of the social network on teenagers, the New York Times reported, citing the US senator who will lead the hearing.

"He’s the top guy at Instagram, and the whole nation is asking about why Instagram and other tech platforms have created so much danger and damage by driving toxic content to children with these immensely powerful algorithms. The hearing will be critically significant in guiding us to develop laws that can have an impact on making platforms safer," the chairman of the Senate Commerce subcommittee on consumer protection, Richard Blumenthal, said as quoted by the newspaper on Wednesday.

The senator added that he would ask Mosseri about how the app's algorithms can trap and keep children in the online space. Hundreds of parents and children have already testified with their own stories about personal feeds promoting unhealthy habits, self-harm, and extreme dieting. Blumenthal seeks to oblige Mosseri to make Instagram’s recommendation decisions transparent, and noted that Snap, TikTok, and YouTube officials had already committed to more transparent algorithms.

The defense argued that the three men were attempting to carry out a citizen’s arrest, which is legal in the state of Georgia. Travis McMichael testified that while they were pursuing Arbery, he attacked him, which led McMichael to shoot him in self-defense. “We were face to face. And being struck, that’s when I shot,” he testified. McMichael said he believed he was in “a life-or-death situation.”

Conservative MP Nick Fletcher has identified a novel reason why so many young British men are supposedly turning to crime: Women are now filling positive TV and movie roles once occupied by men.

52 people, including 6 rescuers, presumed dead in horror mine explosion – media

A mining accident in Siberia has killed 52 people, including six rescue workers, Russian media have reported citing preliminary data from emergency services, with all the missing persons presumed dead.

Over 260 miners have been rescued from the facility after reports of an explosion, with 40 of them ending up hospitalized. Some 11 miners were confirmed dead shortly after the accident unfolded, while 35 mere were considered missing. At least three out of six emergency workers have also perished during rescue efforts.

Late on Thursday, RIA Novosti reported that all the missing persons were presumed dead, citing sources in the emergency services. The assessment, however, has not yet been officially confirmed by Russia's EMERCOM, with its press service telling RT that the fate of 35 miners and three rescuers remains unknown.

The deadly accident at the Listvyazhskaya mine located in Russia’s Siberian region of Kuzbass unfolded early on Thursday. The mine was filled with thick smoke after reports of an explosion of one of its ventilation shafts.

“Most likely, it was explosion of methane, triggered by a spark somewhere, that lead to the blast and a shockwave. It injured people who were unable to get out,” Russia’s deputy prosecutor general, Dmitri Demeshin has said.

A criminal probe into the accident has already been launched, with the mine’s director, his first deputy, and also the manager of the site detained, Russia’s investigative committee said.

A total of 257 media outlets have been shut "due to financial challenges as well as restrictions" since the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan, a media report said citing an NGO.

NAI, the group which has been providing advocacy and support to the Afghan media industry since 2004, said on Tuesday said the closed outlets include print, radio and TV stations, TOLO News reported.

NAI reportedly said that over 70 per cent of Afghan media workers have become jobless or left the country after Kabul fell to the Taliban on August 15.

Reports have also revealed that during the 100 days of Taliban rule, six reporters have lost their lives in various incidents including attacks by unknown armed men, explosions, suicide and traffic incidents.

US Company Makes Electric VTOL Craft That Resembles UFO Could Transport People 'Superman-Style'

With the first prototype of the craft complete, the company reportedly could begin manned flights "within three to six months.”

A US-based company called Zeva Aero has produced the first prototype of its single-person vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) electric flying craft that resembles the classic flying saucer design from the late 20th century, New Atlas reports.

According to the media outlet, the craft is essentially a carbon disc about 2.4 meters in diameter with a gross weight of some 317 kilograms.

A “person-sized cavity” is located in the middle of the disc and a “clear section” that allows the craft’s occupant to “see out”, as well as two nacelles, each sporting a pair of coaxially mounted electric props. Batteries will be located in the sides of the disc, separated into packs that will be “isolated from one another in double-walled carbon boxes, which will be constantly monitored and capable of venting both heat and toxic gases outside the aircraft in the case of a battery fire.”

The new craft is reportedly expected to function as an air taxi, ferrying passengers “head-first, face-down and Superman-style.”

Company CEO Stephen Tibbits told the media outlet that among other uses for their product would be the use by "first responders, search and rescue, hot extraction, resupply.”

"We've got civil applications and DOD applications, and people are getting pretty excited about it," he said. "So yeah, we're zigging where others are zagging, but my consideration is that where these things are needed, and where they can be used straight away, is not in the urban environment. That's the last place we'll put them, once we've got thousands of hours up."

French hit with new set of Covid measures

The French government has unveiled a slate of Covid measures to combat a fifth wave of the virus, including requiring masks for indoor spaces and ordering all adults to get a booster shot for their health pass.

Health Minister Olivier Veran announced the moves on Thursday, outlining efforts to prevent a spike in hospitalizations and fatalities from the virus without plunging the nation back into a lockdown.

From Saturday, all adults in France will be eligible for a Covid booster shot, with it being required by January 15 to ensure their health pass remains valid. Over-65s have already been told to get their third Covid vaccine by December 15. As it stands, health passes are required across the country to access indoor venues, such as restaurants and bars.

Veran added that the government will no longer accept a negative test taken within 72 hours of arrival as an alternative to the Covid pass. Instead, the negative Covid test will need to have been taken within 24 hours of entry.

From this week, masks will, once again, be mandatory in all indoor places and, for the festive season, at outdoor Christmas markets.

Columbia University to pay $12.5 mln to settle COVID-19 refund claims

Columbia University agreed to pay $12.5 million to settle a lawsuit by students who claimed it failed to refund fees when it moved classes online in the spring 2020 semester because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

A preliminary settlement of the proposed class action was filed on Tuesday night, and requires approval by U.S. District Judge Jesse Furman in Manhattan.

Columbia will refund $8.56 million in fees for student activities, health services and the use of its gyms, libraries and other facilities, and pay nearly $4 million to avoid the risks of further litigation.

The Ivy League school had previously given a partial fee refund. Roy Willey, a lawyer for the students, said the $8.56 million was 100% of what the university still owed. Columbia denied wrongdoing in agreeing to settle.
