Detroit superintendent defends critical race theory and says it’s embedded in the curriculum

December 01, 2021 11:45 AM

The superintendent of Detroit Public Schools said the district has embedded critical race theory in its school curriculum and criticized the Michigan state Legislature for attempting to ban it.

Nikolai Vitti, the superintendent of Detroit Public Schools, acknowledged that critical race theory is taught in district public schools during a Detroit school board meeting on Nov. 9.

“Our curriculum is deeply using critical race theory, especially in social studies, but you’ll find it in English Language Arts and the other disciplines,” Vitti said. “We’re very intentional about creating a curriculum, infusing materials, and embedding critical race theory within our curriculum.”

The statement is noteworthy because liberal activists and Democratic politicians have repeatedly insisted, despite evidence to the contrary, that critical race theory, which teaches that American institutions and culture are systemically racist and oppressive to racial minorities, is not taught in K-12 public schools.

Putin lays down ‘red line,’ threatens retaliation if missiles placed in Ukraine

Russian President Vladimir Putin warned NATO and the US Tuesday that any deployment of troops or missiles in Ukraine would cross a “red line” and prompt a military response.

“The emergence of such threats represents a ‘red line’ for us,” the Russian leader said. “I hope that it will not get to that and common sense and responsibility for their own countries and the global community will eventually prevail.”

Putin also threatened to retaliate using the Kremlin’s latest weapon, a Tsirkon hypersonic cruise missile Russia successfully test-fired earlier this month that can travel nine times the speed of sound.

“If some kind of strike systems appear on the territory of Ukraine, the flight time to Moscow will be 7-10 minutes, and five minutes in the case of a hypersonic weapon being deployed,” Putin said.

“What are we to do in such a scenario?” he continued. “We will have to then create something similar in relation to those who threaten us in that way. And we can do that now.”

Avalanche delays holiday tradition in Alaska’s largest city

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — A holiday tradition in Alaska’s largest city for more than 60 years got off to a dim start this year.

A 300-foot (91-meter) wide, brightly illuminated star situated high above Anchorage in the Chugach Mountains is traditionally lit the day after Thanksgiving. However, when military crews arrived on Friday to light the star, only about half of the 350 or so bulbs worked.

Airmen worked for three days in extreme conditions and cold temperatures before finding the cause of the problem Tuesday.

The star is located near a former U.S. Army missile installation in the Chugach range, on the city’s eastern edge. To reach the star, crews have to drive a truck up a road, offload tracked vehicles at a side road and travel several more miles before they reach the star, Eaton said.
