I was raised in a Protestant home on the South/Southwest side of Chicago, 1960s & 70s. Most of the other kids in my neighborhood were either "nothing" or Catholic.

I remember hearing about what my Catholic friends were taught at their schools and by their parents. I remember my mom telling me that Catholics are Christians. But that never matched up in my head. To me, being Catholic was just following a bunch of man made rules. That's what Jesus criticized the Pharisees for doing.

And my Catholic friends didn't really know what was in the Bible. They went to CCD classes and learned about Catholic Saints and stuff. All of the ceremonial things were important. All based on works instead of faith.

This whole thing with the Pope and the Catholic Church seems like it is just used to control people.

Why do Jews practice Judaism?

Do Jews believe that they are the only people who will go to Heaven?

Don't all religions believe that they alone know the truth and that everyone else has it all wrong?

Are there any Jewish missionaries? It doesn't seem like they are looking for converts. It seems to be more of an elitist religion of entitlement. I guess they allow converts, but they don't seem to encourage it. It seems more like you have to the Jewish ethnic group to be a "real" Jew. What about Ivanka Trump? She converted to Judaism. Can someone who is a Christian actually convert to Judaism? That seems like a backwards step instead of a forward step.

I have many friends who used to be Catholic.

They ditched the Catholic church when they decided to read the Bible and see what the Bible actually says. When they tried to tell their Catholic families about what the Bible says, their families would say, "Bible, Smible" and tell them to stop reading the Bible and just listen to what the priests say to do.

The Catholic church does not want people to read the Bible because they don't want people to start thinking for themselves and learning the truth.

Protestants were big proponents of teaching their kids to learn how to read, primarily so that their kids could read the Bible.

I don't know that I would be a Christian if I was not raised in a Christian home by Christian parents who brought all of us kids to church every Sunday. But as an adult, I became disillusioned with organized religion and the politics of it all.

Every church I've ever belonged to had their "five mafia families" who run the show. Usually the families who have the most money. They want everything run their way and want everyone else to do all of the volunteer work.
