I worked in special ed for about 10 years, to include working with autistic kids from the highest functioning to the lowest functioning.
I came to the conclusion that special educ has become a big money pit, money making scheme. It costs 10x as much to give a special needs kid a "free & public" education. I'm not bashing special education. I love the kids. But it goes way above & beyond anything that is necessary. Most of the kids I worked with, imo, would have been better off staying at home with a loving parent. They push the kids to do a lot of unnecessary stuff.
I think part of the over diagnosis is more about money than about the kids.
Like so many other things, it starts out with good intentions and then turns into corruption.
