Do these people ACTUALLY not understand how even their own magic works? We really are dealing with fortified idiocy, with nothing backing it up, aren't we?
The problem is they (mistakenly) believed that they had MUCH stronger control of the general population than they did in reality. Turned out they had near complete control over a very vocal minority, while the huge majority of the population just tuned them out and did their own shit.
