Human virus is similar to a computer virus.
Novel implies new similar to a zero day exploit.
Except once it is no longer Novel (Signatures) are added to virus definition tables on a computer similarly to the human immune system. Once it's no longer Novel it can no longer sneak in un noticed.

We have Influenza A and B every year when covid showed up we got a third flue spike when covid showed up. I don't think the CDC has this chart published any longer tho.
