According to the most recent report by the New Mexico Department of Health, deaths from vaccinated individuals from Nov. 15 to Dec. 13 are now in the double digits at 18.4%.

 

The November report showed only 4.9% of deaths were Unvaccinated.

A pair of over-the-counter compounds has been found in preliminary tests to inhibit the virus that causes COVID-19, University of Florida Health researchers have found.

 

The combination includes diphenhydramine, an antihistamine used for allergy symptoms. When paired with lactoferrin, a protein found in cow and human milk, the compounds were found to hinder the SARS-CoV-2 virus during tests in monkey cells and human lung cells.

 

The findings by David A. Ostrov, Ph.D., an immunologist and associate professor in the UF College of Medicine’s department of pathology, immunology and laboratory medicine and his colleagues, are published in the journal Pathogens.

 

“We found out why certain drugs are active against the virus that causes COVID-19. Then, we found an antiviral combination that can be effective, economical and has a long history of safety,” Ostrov said.

 

Due to his earlier research with colleagues at UF, Ostrov already knew diphenhydramine was potentially effective against the SARS-CoV-2 virus. The latest discovery has its roots in a routine meeting of scientists with the Global Virus Network’s COVID-19 task force. One researcher presented unpublished data on federally approved compounds that inhibit SARS-CoV-2 activity, including lactoferrin.

 

Like diphenhydramine, lactoferrin is available without a prescription. Ostrov thought about pairing it with diphenhydramine and ran with the idea. In lab tests on human and monkey cells, the combination was particularly potent: Individually, the two compounds each inhibited SARS-CoV-2 virus replication by about 30%. Together, they reduced virus replication by 99%.

 

The findings, Ostrov said, are a first step in developing a formulation that could be used to accelerate COVID-19 recovery. It also raises the prospect of further study through an academic-corporate partnership for human clinical trials focused on COVID-19 prevention. Additional research into the compounds’ effectiveness for COVID-19 prevention is already underway in mouse models.

 

To establish their findings, the research team focused on proteins expressed in human cells known as sigma receptors. In COVID-19 cases, the virus “hijacks” stress-response machinery, including sigma receptors, in order to replicate in the body. Interfering with that signaling appears to be the key to inhibiting the virus’s potency.

“We now know the detailed mechanism of how certain drugs inhibit SARS-CoV-2 infection,” Ostrov said.

 

Data from the experiments show that a highly specific sigma receptor binding drug candidate (with pain relieving properties), and formulated combinations of over-the-counter products (such as diphenhydramine and lactoferrin) have the potential to inhibit virus infection and decrease recovery time from COVID-19, the researchers concluded.

While the findings are encouraging, Ostrov cautions against self-medicating with either diphenhydramine or lactoferrin as a COVID-19 prevention or treatment. The type of lactoferrin used in the research differs slightly from the type that is commonly available to consumers, he noted. Lactoferrin is commonly used as a supplement to treat stomach and intestinal ulcers, among other uses.

 

Scientists from UF’s Emerging Pathogens Institute, College of Pharmacy and Clinical and Translational Science Institute, the University of Saskatchewan and the Saskatchewan Cancer Agency collaborated on the research.

EAU CLAIRE (WQOW) - A Chippewa Falls man was sent to the hospital on Friday after his vehicle was struck by a train at the Indianhead Warehouse.

 

According to the report from the Eau Claire Police Department:

 

The incident happened on Friday, December 17 shortly after noon. The conductor of a train was moving in reverse, approaching where the train tracks cross the exit/entry way for Indianhead Warehouse. At the same time, the driver of a pickup truck was exiting the property, and was struck by a train cart.

 

Two witnesses told police they did not hear a horn from the train and there was no one standing at the warehouse apron to stop vehicles from entering or exiting.

 

The driver was transported to a local hospital. The Wisconsin Motor Vehicle Crash Report said the truck driver had suspected minor injuries.

The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has been notified that a farm-raised deer in Eau Claire County has tested positive for Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD). The notification came from the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection. As a result, a ban on feeding and baiting of deer has been placed over a 10 mile radius of the Town of Fairchild, where the deer was found on a deer farm.

 

The feeding and baiting ban is required under state law, and applies to farm-raised or free-roaming domestic or wild animals that test positive for CWD or tuberculosis. The DNR will renew the feeding and baiting ban in Eau Claire county for three years and has enacted a two-year ban in Jackson and Clark counties effective Dec. 13.

 

A DNR press release highlights that bait piles can encourage deer to congregate unnaturally around a shared food source near sick deer. This causes CWD to spread. Infection can be left behind in the saliva and urine of afflicted deer. The ban comes as the winter hunting season for deer continues across the state. In September, the DNR also confirmed that tissue samples from dead deer in La Crosse County tested positive for the virus which causes Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease in deer. A landowner reported finding eight dead deer on a 200-acre property.

 

Neither CWD nor Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease are known to infect humans. Nevertheless, the DNR recommends that any deer taken by hunters during the season be tested for diseases before consumption. The DNR has kiosk stations where hunters can test for CWD.

The West Australian Premier has revealed all workers who are subject to vaccine mandates are now required to get their booster shot within a month of becoming eligible.

 

The West Australian Premier has announced a booster shot is now mandatory for all workers in industries with vaccine mandates.

 

Mark McGowan made the announcement following a snap National Cabinet meeting where the Prime Minister and the state and territory leaders discussed the threat of the Omicron variant.

 

The Premier revealed the health advice showed three doses is “far more effective” against the Omicron strain when compared to two doses of a COVID-19 vaccine.

 

“You need to start thinking about booking a third dose as soon as possible, before Omicron comes into our community,” Mr McGowan said.

 

Under the revised mandate - the first booster shot mandate in the world - workers in the affected industries will need to have their booster shot within a month of becoming eligible.

 

The following industries will be affected: Border control and air transport, residential and non-residential community care services, corrective services, WA Police, emergency services, meat processing.

 

Workers in occupations deemed crititcal to the ongoing delivery of critical services in the community including supermarkets, hospitality, education, transport and financial institutions are also subject to the updated mandate. A full list of workers subject to mandates can be found here.

 

Mr McGowan said the new policy was an attempt to speed up the state’s booster shot uptake as only a third of those eligible for a third dose had so far received it.

 

Currently WA’s double dose vaccination rate for residents aged 12 years and older sits at 82.7 per cent while 90.9 per cent have received at least one dose.

 

The Premier revealed he suspected eventually a third dose would be a requirement for entry to events and stadiums but said a decision on that would be made at a later date.

 

Under the current health advice Australians can get their booster shot five months after their second dose however there is research underway on whether that interval could be shortened.

 

Mr McGowan said he “hoped” the interval was shortened so the timeframe for the booster shot mandates could also be brought forward.

James Franco admits to having sex with his students: ‘That was wrong’

 

James Franco is finally copping to having sex with his students more than two years after they accused him of sexual exploitation.

 

The “This Is the End” star admitted in a wide-ranging interview with SiriusXM’s Jess Cagle that he thought sleeping with students of his acting school, Studio 4, was acceptable because it was “consensual” but denied starting the program to have access to them.

 

“Look, I’ll admit I did sleep with students. I didn’t sleep with anybody in [my ‘Sex Scenes’ class], but, over the course of my teaching, I did sleep with students and that was wrong,” Franco, 43, explained to Cagle.

Ex-students Sarah Tither-Kaplan and Toni Gaal filed a lawsuit in the Los Angeles County Superior Court in October 2019 claiming Franco and other instructors pressured women to get naked for auditions while dangling opportunities for movie roles that rarely materialized.

 

By engaging in “widespread inappropriate and sexually charged behavior towards female students,” Franco created “an environment of harassment and sexual exploitation” at the school, claims the suit, first reported by the New York Times.

 

The former “Freaks and Geeks” star’s attorney denied any wrongdoing at the time in a statement to The Post: “This is not the first time that these claims have been made and they have already been debunked.”

 

“James will not only fully defend himself, but will also seek damages from the plaintiffs and their attorneys for filing this scurrilous publicity seeking lawsuit,” the statement said.

 

However, according to Variety, Franco settled the lawsuit for $2,235,000 in June 2021.

 

Franco’s Studio 4 closed permanently in 2017.

A pedestrian was struck and killed by a passing Norfolk Southern train Monday afternoon in Homestead.

 

The Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the victim as Monterey Markee Woodson, 49, of McKees Rocks. The incident happened shortly before 1 p.m. along railroad tracks behind the 400 block of East Eighth Avenue.

 

Allegheny County police are investigating Woodson’s death.

Christians Protest Satanic Holiday Display Installed Alongside Nativity Scene In Illinois Capitol

 

Members of the Satanic Temple of Illinois traveled to the Illinois Capitol in Springfield to install a Satanic display in the rotunda alongside a Christian nativity scene already present. The Satanic display mocks Christianity with a statue of Baphomet as a baby.

 

The Stanic Temple members allege the display is meant to recognize the holiday of Sol Invictus. However, the Sol Invictus Holiday is grounded in ancient Greek and Roman polytheism and unrelated to the Baphomet Satanic figure.

 

A group of Satanists stood around the display and offered praise of the statue and Satan, saying, “We invite you today to bring wisdom, justice, rationality…equality, tolerance, and passion…” and chanting “Hail Satan”. The Satanists were drowned out by a massive group of Catholic protestors praying on their knees. The protestors held signs which read, “Satan has NO rights!” and “Begone Satan! Mary Crushes the Serpent”.

 

The Catholic Bishop of Springfield criticized the Satanic display, describing it as a mockery of religion for political purposes. A Diocese of Springfield spokesperson said, “Mocking the millions of Christians in the state of Illinois and billions around the world by depicting the baby Jesus this Christmas with the ‘satanic deity’ Baphomet is the very definition of evil and causing division, but that is to be expected from an organization that is in existence to troll people of faith.”

 

The State of Illinois put a sign in the rotunda by the displays which says, “The State of Illinois is required by the First Amendment of the United States Constitution to allow temporary, public display in the state capitol so long as these displays are not paid for by taxpayer dollars. Because the first floor of the Capitol rotunda is a public place, state officials cannot legally censor the content of speech or displays. The United States Supreme Court has held that public officials may legally impose reasonable time, place and manner restrictions regarding displays and speech, but no regulation can be based on the content of the speech.”

Remember we had the 6.2 earthquake. Just before the EQ we had a power outage, then the power came back in about a couple hours. Then the EQ. The US Department of Defense puzzled Internet experts by apparently transferring control of tens of millions of dormant IP addresses to an obscure Florida company just before President Donald Trump left the White House, but the Pentagon has finally offered a partial explanation for why it happened. The Defense Department says it still owns the addresses but that it is using a third-party company in a "pilot" project to conduct security research.

 

"Minutes before Trump left office, millions of the Pentagon's dormant IP addresses sprang to life" was the title of a Washington Post article on Saturday. Literally three minutes before Joe Biden became president, a company called Global Resource Systems LLC "discreetly announced to the world's computer networks a startling development: It now was managing a huge unused swath of the Internet that, for several decades, had been owned by the US military," the Post said.

 

The number of Pentagon-owned IP addresses announced by the company rose to 56 million by late January and 175 million by April, making it the world's largest announcer of IP addresses in the IPv4 global routing table.

 

"The theories were many," the Post article said. "Did someone at the Defense Department sell off part of the military's vast collection of sought-after IP addresses as Trump left office? Had the Pentagon finally acted on demands to unload the billions of dollars worth of IP address space the military has been sitting on, largely unused, for decades?"

 

The Post said it got an answer from the Defense Department on Friday in the form of a statement from the director of "an elite Pentagon unit known as the Defense Digital Service."

 

The Post wrote:

 

Brett Goldstein, the DDS's director, said in a statement that his unit had authorized a "pilot effort" publicizing the IP space owned by the Pentagon.

 

"This pilot will assess, evaluate, and prevent unauthorized use of DoD IP address space," Goldstein said. "Additionally, this pilot may identify potential vulnerabilities."

“SWAT team of nerds”

The 6-year-old DDS consists of "82 engineers, data scientists, and computer scientists" who "worked on the much-publicized 'hack the Pentagon' program" and a variety of other projects tackling some of the hardest technology problems faced by the military, a Department of Defense article said in October 2020. Goldstein has called the unit a "SWAT team of nerds."

 

The Defense Department did not say what the unit's specific objectives are in its project with Global Resource Systems, "and Pentagon officials declined to say why Goldstein's unit had used a little-known Florida company to carry out the pilot effort rather than have the Defense Department itself 'announce' the addresses through BGP [Border Gateway Protocol] messages—a far more routine approach," the Post said.

 

Still, the government's explanation piqued the interest of Doug Madory, director of Internet analysis at network-security company Kentik.

 

"I interpret this to mean that the objectives of this effort are twofold," Madory wrote in a blog post Saturday. "First, to announce this address space to scare off any would-be squatters, and secondly, to collect a massive amount of background Internet traffic for threat intelligence."

 

New company remains mysterious

The Washington Post and Associated Press weren't able to dig up many details about Global Resource Systems. "The company did not return phone calls or emails from The Associated Press. It has no web presence, though it has the domain grscorp.com," an AP story yesterday said. "Its name doesn't appear on the directory of its Plantation, Florida, domicile, and a receptionist drew a blank when an AP reporter asked for a company representative at the office earlier this month. She found its name on a tenant list and suggested trying email. Records show the company has not obtained a business license in Plantation." The AP apparently wasn't able to track down people associated with the company.

The AP said that the Pentagon "has not answered many basic questions, beginning with why it chose to entrust management of the address space to a company that seems not to have existed until September." The AP did find out that the Defense Department still owns the IP addresses, saying that "a Defense Department spokesman, Russell Goemaere, told the AP on Saturday that none of the newly announced space has been sold."

 

Bigger than China Telecom and Comcast

Network experts were stumped by the emergence of Global Resource Systems for a while. Madory called it "a great mystery."

 

At 11:57 am EST on January 20, three minutes before the Trump administration officially came to an end, "[a]n entity that hadn't been heard from in over a decade began announcing large swaths of formerly unused IPv4 address space belonging to the US Department of Defense," Madory wrote. Global Resource Systems is labeled AS8003 and GRS-DOD in BGP records.

By late January, AS8003 was announcing about 56 million IPv4 addresses, making it the sixth largest AS [autonomous system] in the IPv4 global routing table by originated address space. By mid-April, AS8003 dramatically increased the amount of formerly unused DoD address space that it announced to 175 million unique addresses.

 

Following the increase, AS8003 became, far and away, the largest AS in the history of the Internet as measured by originated IPv4 space. By comparison, AS8003 now announces 61 million more IP addresses than the now-second biggest AS in the world, China Telecom, and over 100 million more addresses than Comcast, the largest residential Internet provider in the US.

In mid-March, "astute contributors to the NANOG listserv highlighted the oddity of massive amounts of DoD address space being announced by what appeared to be a shell company," Madory noted.

 

DoD has “massive ranges” of IPv4 space

The Defense Department "was allocated numerous massive ranges of IPv4 address space" decades ago, but "only a portion of that address space was ever utilized (i.e. announced by the DoD on the Internet)," Madory wrote. Expanding on his point that the Defense Department may want to "scare off any would-be squatters," he wrote that "there is a vast world of fraudulent BGP routing out there. As I've documented over the years, various types of bad actors use unrouted address space to bypass blocklists in order to send spam and other types of malicious traffic."

On the Defense Department's goal of collecting "background Internet traffic for threat intelligence," Madory noted that "there is a lot of background noise that can be scooped up when announcing large ranges of IPv4 address space."

 

Potential routing problems

The emergence of previously dormant IP addresses could lead to routing problems. In 2018, AT&T unintentionally blocked its home-Internet customers from Cloudflare's new DNS service because the Cloudflare service and the AT&T gateway were using the same IP address of 1.1.1.1.

 

Madory wrote:

 

For decades, Internet routing operated with a widespread assumption that ASes didn't route these prefixes on the Internet (perhaps because they were canonical examples from networking textbooks). According to their blog post soon after the launch [of DNS resolver 1.1.1.1], Cloudflare received "~10Gbps of unsolicited background traffic" on their interfaces.

 

And that was just for 512 IPv4 addresses! Of course, those addresses were very special, but it stands to reason that 175 million IPv4 addresses will attract orders of magnitude more traffic [from] misconfigured devices and networks that mistakenly assumed that all of this DoD address space would never see the light of day.

 

Madory's conclusion was that the new statement from the Defense Department "answers some questions," but "much remains a mystery." It isn't clear why the Defense Department didn't simply announce the address space itself instead of using an obscure outside entity, and it's unclear why the project came "to life in the final moments of the previous administration," he wrote.

 

But something good might come out of it, Madory added: "We likely won't get all of the answers anytime soon, but we can certainly hope that the DoD uses the threat intel gleaned from the large amounts of background traffic for the benefit of everyone. Maybe they could come to a NANOG conference and present about the troves of erroneous traffic being sent their way.

Congresswoman Mary Gay Scanlon (D-PA) was carjacked and robbed at gunpoint in South Philadelphia on Wednesday.

 

According to WPVI, the crime occurred in FDR Park ‘around 2:45 p.m. in the 1900 block of Pattison Avenue after a tour including members of Congress.’

 

Scanlon was robbed of her car, her ID, cell phone and other belongings. No injuries were reported.

‘Good Shepherd’ ancient gold ring found in a Roman-era wreck in Mediterranean

One of the earliest known depictions of Jesus Christ as the Good Shepherd has been found on a ring retrieved from shallow waters in the Mediterranean sea.

The piece was among a haul of hundreds of artefacts discovered during recent months in an area rich with archaeological treasures.

Israeli archaeologists believe the haul is from two ships that were wrecked by a storm in what was known at the time as Caesarea.

They found hundreds of silver and bronze Roman coins, as well as figurines, pottery vessels and iron workings.

U.S. health regulators cleared use of a Covid-19 pill from Pfizer Inc., the first drug that newly infected patients can now take at home to stay out of the hospital.

The authorization by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Wednesday permits doctors to prescribe the medicine to high-risk patients age 12 and older early in the course of disease, shortly after they develop symptoms.

The FDA said the drug, named Paxlovid, worked safely and would be an important tool in reducing hospital admissions and death.

The pill arrives as the Omicron variant spreads across the U.S. Researchers expect antivirals like Paxlovid would be effective against the new strain because of the way they work, but are waiting for studies to confirm their suspicion.

Patrizia Cavazzoni, director of the FDA’s drug division, described the authorization as a major step forward in the fight against the coronavirus. “This authorization provides a new tool to combat Covid-19 at a crucial time in the pandemic as new variants emerge,” she said.

Paxlovid is expected to be available at pharmacies and hospitals in the coming days. Initial supplies will be limited, until Pfizer can ramp up production.

The U.S. will have more than 250,000 courses of treatment available in January, President Biden said.

“As Pfizer works to produce these treatments as quickly as possible, we will work closely with them and provide any resource needed, including using the Defense Production Act if warranted,” he said.

The U.S. government has agreed to pay $5.29 billion to purchase 10 million treatment courses that Pfizer will deliver by the end of next year. The drug will be free to patients, Mr. Biden has said.

Pfizer said it aims to make 120 million treatment courses next year, up from its previous projection of 80 million.

The pill’s key advantage over most existing treatments is that patients can easily take them at home, unlike antibody therapies or the antiviral Veklury that usually require administration at a clinic or hospital.

“This breakthrough therapy, which has been shown to significantly reduce hospitalizations and deaths and can be taken at home, will change the way we treat Covid-19,” said Pfizer Chief Executive Albert Bourla.

Paxlovid could reach $18 billion in sales next year, according to JPMorgan Chase & Co. analysts.

Pfizer has said laboratory tests indicate that Paxlovid could work against the Omicron variant, in part because the drug works differently than other therapies targeting the spike protein on the virus.

Researchers designed the pill to stop the coronavirus from spreading in people by blocking activity of a key enzyme, known as protease, which the virus needs to replicate.

The enzyme isn’t believed to be mutated in Omicron, which is why Pfizer and other researchers say the antiviral likely will work against Omicron.

The authorization comes after researchers found Paxlovid was safe and cut the risk of hospitalization or death by about 89% if people at high risk of severe Covid-19 took the pill within three days of diagnosis.

The treatment was also highly effective if begun within five days of symptoms, according to Pfizer.

Some researchers have raised safety concerns, because Paxlovid is taken with another drug. The second drug, called ritonavir, helps Paxlovid fight the virus longer, but can cause side effects when taken with certain widely used heart and cholesterol medicines.

Under the authorization, the FDA said Paxlovid shouldn’t be used with certain drugs for conditions including cancer, irregular heart rhythms and depression.

The FDA also recommended against giving Paxlovid to patients with severe kidney disease or liver impairment and said patients with moderate kidney issues should take a reduced dose. In patients with moderate renal impairment, a reduced Paxlovid dose is needed, it said.

European health regulators, who are reviewing Pfizer’s application for Paxlovid clearance, recently issued preliminary guidelines recommending that people don’t use it if they are pregnant or are trying to get pregnant, or if they are taking certain medicines or have severely reduced kidney or liver function.

Pfizer has said it expects doctors and pharmacists will find most of the drug interactions to be manageable.

Under the authorization, patients age 12 and older should begin a course of treatment within several days of symptoms emerging to prevent their cases from turning serious and requiring hospitalization.

People with a prescription would take two Paxlovid pills and one ritonavir pill twice a day for five days.

Pfizer has licensed Paxlovid’s formula so that generic drugmakers can make it for low- and middle-income countries.

Pfizer is also studying the drug in a separate study in adults at lower risk of developing severe disease, including vaccinated individuals.

A front panel or smartphone app might reassure you that, yes, your wine and mixers are still chilled and your vodka's still frozen — or whatever you have in your refrigerator — but there's nothing to tell you that it serves another master.

A Bob's Burgers voice actor has been 'banned' from the hit animated TV show over his alleged involvement in the January 6 Capitol riots.

 

Jay Johnston, 53, who voiced the character Jimmy Pesto Sr., was kicked off the FOX before the start of this year's 12th season, two sources told The Daily Beast.

 

The comedian previously worked on the HBO sketch comedy series Mr. Show with Bob and David and starred in The Sarah Silverman Program.

 

According to a source, the cast and crew of Bob's Burgers and the network were not looking to make 'a big deal' about the actor's ousting.

 

Despite basically being fired, Johnston has not actually been proven to have been present at the Capitol or been arrested or charged in connection to the deadly riot.

 

The allegations against Johnston began when the FBI took to social media in March seeking information on people who took part in the insurrection.

 

The post included two photos of a person, one with a camouflage face covering and one without, that looks strikingly similar to the actor.

 

Although not confirmed to have been him, tweets from people who've worked with Johnston have claimed it is and people have also come forward saying they have knowledge Jay was actually present, the Daily Beast reported.

 

The riot at the Capitol on January 6 occurred as Congress was working on counting the Electoral College ballots and certifying Joe Biden's presidential victory.

 

The siege followed a rally near the White House earlier that day in which Trump exhorted supporters to march on the Capitol during a speech in which he repeated false claims that the election was stolen from him through widespread voting fraud.

 

Four people died the day of the riot, and one Capitol police officer died the next day of injuries sustained while defending Congress. Hundreds of police were injured during the multi-hour melee and four officers have since taken their own lives.

 

Nearly 700 people have been charged in the year since.

 

The riot also resulted in the historic second impeachment of Trump, who was accused of inciting and goading the rioters.
