Fauci seemed distressed when he said there were an "unprecedented" number of protein substitutes in the Omnicron variant.

That combined with how contagious it is (also "unprecedented") and how mild it is - all seem to point to it being White-Hat-altered to create rapid herd immunity at little to no cost to those infected.
