Langer checks a lot of boxes in this Anon's opinion. He has connections to Bill Gates, Zuckerberg, Harvard, MIT, Cornell, enthusiasm for CRISPR technology, mRNA vaccines, gain-of-function research, Subcutaneous record-keeping (think Quantum Dot), Moderna (co-founder), Pfizer, China and more. See sauces in this thread (1/4 through 4/4) and in PB threads for support of Anon's opinion.

Anon highly recommends reading Langer's Academy of Achievement biography. It provides some idea of the scope of his impact on the technology involved in bringing mRNA vaccines to market.

Below are highlights of Dr. Langer's Academy of Achievement bio..

-born and raised - Robert Samuel Langer in Albany, New York

-father ran a billiard parlor in nearby Troy, New York, and then a liquor store in Albany - enjoyed magic tricks

-Milne School in Albany - Cornell University - majored in chemical engineering - graduated 1970

-graduate studies at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)

-studied at Cambridge - developed a chemistry and math curriculum for inner city school children

-worked for Dr. Judah Folkman, a Harvard professor who was also chief of surgery at Boston’s Children’s Hospital

-Nutrition and Food Science program at MIT

-first patents concerned polymer systems for controlled release of macromolecules

-at first, NIH funding was a problem for Langer so he sought private funding, worked for smaller companies and started his own companies

-in 1983, International Minerals & Chemicals licensed one of his patents, and hired him as a consultant

-in 1984, Eli Lilly & Co. signed him for a similar project with human hormones

-in 1985, Nova Pharmaceuticals of Baltimore, licensed one of Langer’s patents for the delivery of brain cancer treatment

-in 1987, he and a colleague, Alexander Klibanov, founded Enzytech -microsphere drug delivery system

-Enzytech was later merged with another company to form Alkermes

-in 1988, he started a second company, Neomorphics, to produce biocompatible materials for tissue growth

-Neomorphics was later acquired by larger concerns, Advanced Tissue Sciences and Smith & Nephew

-full professorship at MIT

-in 1992, Langer founded Focal - biodegradable materials for sealants - prevention of surgical adhesions

-"…controlled-release polio vaccine developed in the Langer Lab, has beenfinanced by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundationfor use in the developing world."

-in 2013 received $3 million award financed by entrepreneurs includingGoogle’s Sergey BrinandFacebook’s Mark Zuckerberg

-"…Robert Langer’s MIT professorship was endowed by MIT graduateDavid H. Kochof Koch Industries."

-2019 - Langer Lab - animalcontraceptive pillthat would only need to be taken once a month

-Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation-$13 millionin further development of the monthly pill - developing countries

-January 2020 - Langer co-founder,Moderna-NIAID- begin work on vaccine for the coronavirus Covid-19

-"…Moderna has released more than 300 million doses of the vaccine to the U.S. government… Moderna has a staggering market value of almost $160 billion and anticipates 2021 revenues of over $20 billion from sales of the vaccine. Moderna’s share price has soared 1,919 percent since 2019."

-"It has been estimated that thelives of as many as two billion peoplehave been touched by the technologies created by Robert Langer and his research teams. Many of hisformer studentsnow lead companies or laboratories of their own andadvise governmentson medical technology."

According to Chemical and Engineering News (C&EN), mRNA is very fragile. Many scientists didn't think mRNA vaccine technology would ever work. To quote C&EN exactly, "Luckily, scientists found a solution. To protect the fragile molecule as it sneaks into cells, they turned to a delivery technology with origins older than the idea of mRNA therapy itself: tiny balls of fat called lipid nanoparticles, or LNPs." C&EN reports that Langer believes the authorization of mRNA Covid-19 vaccines is vindication for researchers investigating Lipid Nanoparticle (LNP) controlled drug delivery systems. GluseppeCiaramella(former Moderna head of infectious diseases) says that LNP technology was crucial to mRNA vaccine development. Moderna and other Covid-19 vaccines producers are not saying a lot about their particular lipid nanoparticle formulas.

Robert Langer reveals secrets to early-stage success

"I’m also enthusiastic about gene editing in which technologies such asCRISPR(Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short=Palindromic= Repeats) allow scientists to cut and modify DNA in order to explore the relationships of genes and disease. A major goal is for doctors to be able to make corrections to patients’ genomes in order to prevent, stop or reverse disease. This work is still in the early stages—clinical trials are just starting—but if it’s successful, it could make it possible to correct gene defects and, perhaps, cure genetic diseases."

"Subcutaneous record-keeping"

"In December 2019,Robert S. Langerand his teamdeveloped and patenteda technique wherebytransdermal patchescould be used to label people with invisible ink in order to store medical and other information subcutaneously. This was presented as a boon to "developing nations" where lack of infrastructure means an absence of medical records.[63][64] The technology, which is assigned to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology,[64] uses a "quantum dot dye that is delivered, in this case along with avaccine, by amicroneedle patch." The research "was funded by theBill and Melinda Gates Foundationand the

Koch Institute for Integrative Cancer Research."
