Good article from 2019

Last month, I posted an article describing the stand that kindergarten teachers in Brookline, Massachusetts, took in protesting the policies imposed upon them from above—the excessive testing, dreary drill, and lack of opportunity for playful, creative, joyful activities. The post went somewhat viral, quickly receiving over 200,000 views and more than 80 comments. Most of the comments were in support of the protesting teachers, and many added further confirmation that the child abuse occurring in Brookline kindergartens is occurring in kindergartens throughout the country.

PITTSBURGH — UPMC officials are asking people to not go to the emergency room to get a COVID-19 test if you’re only experiencing mild symptoms.

The hospital system posted on social media you should only go to the emergency department to get tested if you’re experiencing breathing problems or other severe symptoms.

If you want to get tested, there are a number of designated testing locations through UPMC.

Today we celebrate the Feast of St. Francis. Among many other wonderful things, St. Francis was known for his love of animals and uncanny ability to connect with them. It is said that he treated animals with the utmost respect, love, and care. Legend has it that St. Francis even preached to the animals about God’s love and concern for them!

A second covid-19 unit has opened at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh to make way for the potential of rising cases.

It is a precautionary step only, hospital officials said.

According to the CDC, there has been a 114% increase in admissions for covid-positive children — from newborns to 17-year-olds — since the last week of December.

From Dec. 20-26, there were an average of 313 admissions per day.

That number more than doubled to 672 per day from Dec. 27-Jan. 2.

“UPMC Children’s has opened up a second unit to expand care capability for covid-19 patients at the hospital,” said Andrea Kunicky, Children’s manager of media relations. “The hospital is safe, operating normally and ready to provide care for patients and their families.”

Pennsylvania is among nine states that have reported record numbers of covid-related hospitalizations for children, according to an NBC news report.

Other states include Ohio, Connecticut, Georgia, Illinois, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Maine and Missouri, along with Washington, D.C.

There have been more than 80,000 child hospitalizations since Aug. 1 amid the spread of delta and omicron variants, according to the CDC website.

Across the country, more than 78% of people age 5 and older have received at least one dose of a covid vaccine.
