Some opium poppies have red flowers and the fields of grain grown by ancient people were filled with the common poppy which is always red. Not surprisingly, the ancients began to use an equal armed red cross shaped symbol to represent poppies and their dried sap (opium) and the effects that it had. A strange opposition was in it. I think this is why many of the equal armed red cross symbols flare out from the center like a poppy's petals.
