Meta threatens to shut down Facebook and Instagram in Europe

Meta has warned that Facebook and Instagram could be shut down in Europe if it is unable to transfer data to US servers.

Meta has warned it could shut down Facebook and Instagram in Europe if it is not able to transfer data to American servers.

The parent company of Facebook made the declaration in its annual report to the US Securities and Exchange Commission on Thursday.

The tech giant blamed evolving laws and regulations from European regulators, courts and legislative bodies — that have increasingly scrutinised the social media company — and which Meta said was impacting its “critical operations”.

That agreement allowed for a framework for data transfers from the EU to the US and was invalidated by the CJEU.

The EU has strict data protection requirements regarding the transfer of personal data from Europe to the US.

Meta currently relies on Standard Contractual Clauses to transfer data, which the company cautioned could be subject to “regulatory and judicial scrutiny.”

The company said it received a preliminary draft decision from the Irish Data Protection Commission that Meta’s reliance on reliance on SCCs to transfer European data was not in compliance with EU’s General Data Protection Regulation.

Meta said a decision limiting its ability to transfer data to the US could be suspended from the first half of 2022.

“If a new transatlantic data transfer framework is not adopted and we are unable to continue to rely on SCCs or rely upon other alternative means of data transfers from Europe to the United States, we will likely be unable to offer a number of our most significant products and services, including Facebook and Instagram, in Europe, which would materially and adversely affect our business, financial condition, and results of operations.” Meta said in the report.

If Meta makes good on its threat, virtually an entire continent could be left without access to Facebook or Instagram.

‘Unfavourable outcomes’

Sharing data is crucial for the provision of services and targeted advertising, Meta warned.

The company said new privacy laws, such as the California Consumer Privacy Act, which creates new data privacy rights for users, limits how Meta can use sensitive personal information and allows for more user control on how their data is shared with third parties, could adversely affect the social media company.

Meta said the new laws and regulations could lead to “unfavourable outcomes”, adversely affect the development of new products, lead to “negative publicity and reputational harm” and force the company to modify or cease its existing business practices.

Meta did not immediately respond to a request for comment from news.com.au.

Australian actor Robert Manion has slammed Channel Nine's Cleo Smith tell-all

The network aired an exclusive interview with the toddler's parents on Sunday

Manion said blasted the segment's focus on Kelly's obsession with Bratz dolls

He said there is nothing wrong with the hobby and it does not signal criminality

An Australian actor has slammed Channel Nine for linking Cleo Smith's abductor's doll obsession to the kidnapping of the little girl.

Cleo's parents Ellie Smith and Jake Gliddon featured in a blockbuster interview with 60 Minutes on Sunday night where they spoke publicly about their 18 day ordeal for the first time.

The network reportedly paid the couple more than $2million for the interview, which broadcast footage of the inside of Kelly's house packed with Bratz dolls.

Starkid star Robert Manion, based in Los Angeles, quickly fired up his Twitter account to blast the 'incredibly disappointing' coverage of the toddler's disappearance, which described Kelly as a 'doll obsessed loner'.

California prison ‘rape club’ exposed by media investigation

Female inmates were subjected to ‘rampant sexual abuse,’ according to AP

The federal correctional facility in Dublin, California permitted and covered up sexual abuse carried out by staff members, according to a Sunday report by the Associated Press, citing internal Federal Bureau of Prisons statements from inmates and former employees, detailing instances of abuse.

According to the documents, allegations of abuse against guards were ignored and some prisoners were punished with solitary confinement after coming forward.

The warden himself is accused of keeping nude photos on his phone of an inmate he has been accused of assaulting, according to the investigation. One guard reportedly admitted to wanting to get the female inmates pregnant, while another prison official was accused of placing an inmate on a work detail with a staff member she accused of rape, telling her after announcing the job placement that it was time to “let the games begin.”

KEK Aus Gov KEK

Federal anti-corruption commission ruled out before election as government refuses to introduce bill

A national anti-corruption commission will not be established before the next federal election.

Key points:

The Coalition say it will not introduce it for debate unless Labor supports it

Labor has previously said the government's model is not powerful or transparent enough

The government defeated an attempt to bring on debate for a commission last year on a technicality

Prime Minister Scott Morrison first announced a Commonwealth Integrity Commission (CIC) in December 2018, alongside then attorney-general Christian Porter.

Despite years of consultation and draft legislation being released, the Coalition is refusing to introduce the bill to Parliament.

The government has tried to paint it as a test for Labor, arguing it needs to support the proposed anti-corruption watchdog model before it is even debated in Parliament.

That is despite the Coalition having introduced numerous pieces of legislation over the last term of Parliament which did not have cross-party support.

A spokesman for Attorney-General Michaelia Cash, who inherited the model from Mr Porter, said there were only a number of sitting days left before Australians head to the polls.

"We're prioritising religious discrimination and online trolling legislation because these have a better chance of passing in the remaining period," he said.

"If Labor want to vote with us on our CIC legislation we could pass it before the election."

Convoy to Canberra

The people have gathered in Canberra to serve a warning to the Prime Minister that not only do we no longer desire his so-called “leadership,” we will coordinate a response across Australia to ensure the tyrants in power will be brought down.

Australians can no longer afford to be governed by psychopathic and treasonous leaders whose fealty lie elsewhere. It is time for the existing system to be brought to its knees, and for a system designed for the people by the people, to take its rightful place in the new society.

Make no mistake the gathering of people in Canberra over the last week has simply been a warning shot across the bow of all corrupt and treasonous politicians and political parties, of which there are many, in fact, the system itself.

The people will regroup and return in the future with hundreds of thousands sending the corrupt politicians into hiding and we will take this country back for the people.
