Meta threatens to shut down Facebook and Instagram in Europe

 

Meta has warned that Facebook and Instagram could be shut down in Europe if it is unable to transfer data to US servers.

 

Meta has warned it could shut down Facebook and Instagram in Europe if it is not able to transfer data to American servers.

 

The parent company of Facebook made the declaration in its annual report to the US Securities and Exchange Commission on Thursday.

 

The tech giant blamed evolving laws and regulations from European regulators, courts and legislative bodies — that have increasingly scrutinised the social media company — and which Meta said was impacting its “critical operations”.

 

That agreement allowed for a framework for data transfers from the EU to the US and was invalidated by the CJEU.

 

The EU has strict data protection requirements regarding the transfer of personal data from Europe to the US.

 

Meta currently relies on Standard Contractual Clauses to transfer data, which the company cautioned could be subject to “regulatory and judicial scrutiny.”

 

The company said it received a preliminary draft decision from the Irish Data Protection Commission that Meta’s reliance on reliance on SCCs to transfer European data was not in compliance with EU’s General Data Protection Regulation.

 

Meta said a decision limiting its ability to transfer data to the US could be suspended from the first half of 2022.

 

“If a new transatlantic data transfer framework is not adopted and we are unable to continue to rely on SCCs or rely upon other alternative means of data transfers from Europe to the United States, we will likely be unable to offer a number of our most significant products and services, including Facebook and Instagram, in Europe, which would materially and adversely affect our business, financial condition, and results of operations.” Meta said in the report.

 

If Meta makes good on its threat, virtually an entire continent could be left without access to Facebook or Instagram.

 

‘Unfavourable outcomes’

 

Sharing data is crucial for the provision of services and targeted advertising, Meta warned.

 

The company said new privacy laws, such as the California Consumer Privacy Act, which creates new data privacy rights for users, limits how Meta can use sensitive personal information and allows for more user control on how their data is shared with third parties, could adversely affect the social media company.

 

Meta said the new laws and regulations could lead to “unfavourable outcomes”, adversely affect the development of new products, lead to “negative publicity and reputational harm” and force the company to modify or cease its existing business practices.

 

Meta did not immediately respond to a request for comment from news.com.au.

Election worker intimidation to be made a felonyNew Mexico

 

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – A change to a Senate bill that would make intimidating election workers a felony passed the Finance Committee Saturday morning. It changes the election code for Senate Bill 144 making it a fourth-degree felony if anyone intimidates an election worker, secretary of state, municipal clerk, county clerk, or any of their employees.

The Justice Department has launched a task force to combat the intimidation of election workers nationwide. Senator Duhigg sponsored the amendment saying the state needs to follow the DOJ’s lead. “Election officials of both parties are receiving full-time law enforcement protection around the country. As a result, state and local election officials are leaving this profession because of the threats and the stress that this is causing for them and their families,” said Senator Katy Duhigg (D) 10th District.

The bill now goes back to the Senate Judiciary Committee for approval.

FUNDING TO UNIVERSITIES BY THE BILL & MELINDA GATES FOUNDATION

INTRODUCTION

In 2020, we undertook a review of Gates Foundation donations from 2014-18 based on the Foundation’s PF-990 tax filings. In August 2021 - and with the publication of new data provided by the International Aid Transparency Initiative (IATI) about Gates Foundation giving - we have undertaken a ten-year review of its university funding. The world’s largest private foundation has disbursed over $11.6bn in funding to 471 universities and higher education institutions in 66 countries over the past 10 years.

 

According to the IATI data around 17% of Gates giving in the past decade ($67.8bn) has gone directly to universities and higher education institutions. It is a major funder of universities globally. Giving to universities is heavily weighted to North American and Western European institutions.

 

KEY FINDINGS

The Gates Foundation has awarded $11.6bn in funding to 471 universities and higher education institutions in 66 countries over the past 10 years.

 

The number of beneficiaries jumped 44% from 151 in 2010 to 218 in 2019.

 

In 2010, the Foundation awarded $494m to 151 universities in 22 countries.

 

By 2019, the Foundation awarded $1.6bn to 218 universities in 41 countries.

 

The top three research areas that universities successfully received funding for over the past decade are:

 

Maternity, motherhood and early years (17%)

 

Crop & agricultural research (12%)

 

HIV / AIDS (10%)

 

Gates university giving is heavily skewed to developed economies. 92% of its university funding goes to universities in high income countries. 8% goes to middle income countries. Just $20m was awarded to 13 universities in low income countries between 2010-19.

 

While there is a significant skew to US institutions, around a third of funding goes to non-US institutions. In 2010, 37% of Gates Foundation university funding went to institutions outside the US. By 2019, 30% of Gates Foundation university recipients were non-US institutions, reflecting a steady decline over the decade.

 

68% of its university giving has gone to US institutions. UK institutions are second place (12%: $1.4bn) while Canadian universities are the third biggest beneficiary (4%: $462m).

In an official statement and accompanying tweet last April, Blinken alleged that Berisha is “corrupt” and had “undermined democracy in Albania,” and barred him, his wife and two children from entering the US.

 

Berisha strenuously denies the allegations, is outraged that Blinken never provided any proof, claims the US government is trying to prop up the socialist Albanian government of Soros ally Prime Minister Edi Rama and has launched a defamation action against the secretary in a Paris court. Last year, the correctional tribunal of Paris agreed to hear his case.

 

“Never in my life was I accused by a person or an institution of corruption,” Berisha said on the phone from the Albanian capital Tirana. “The opposite was true. I worked very closely with the US government in fighting corruption.”

Biden to visit Israel later this year

President Biden spoke with Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett on Sunday about tensions in the Middle East and Eastern Europe, while also accepting his invitation to visit Israel.

 

"The President thanked the Prime Minister for his invitation to visit Israel and said he looks forward to a visit later this year," the White House said in a statement about the call.

 

During the call, the leaders also "discussed the recent U.S. operation against the ISIS leader in northwestern Syria and the ongoing U.S. commitment to protect the American people and support the defense of its partners across the Middle East region."

 

The White House’s statement also noted that Biden also voiced "his administration’s full support for replenishing Israel’s Iron Dome system," an air defense system meant to intercept short-range rockets.

 

The leaders also spoke about the potential for Russian aggression against Ukraine and other matters including "the threat posed by Iran and its proxies."

 

Israel has previously voiced concerns about the U.S.-led efforts to restore the Iranian nuclear deal of 2015, an agreement that former President Trump left in 2018. Israel, a long-time adversary of Iran, was also opposed to the initial agreement and argues that it will not keep Iran from developing nuclear weapons capabilities.

 

Last week, a senior State Department official said that the U.S. and Iran only have “a handful of weeks left to get a deal.”
