Canadian capital declares state of emergency over Freedom Convoy

Ottawa mayor calls emergency due to ongoing anti-Covid mandate protests

Ottawa mayor Jim Watson has declared a state of emergency, citing “serious danger and threat to the safety and security of residents,” as Freedom Convoy truckers and their pedestrian supporters continue to occupy the capital. The move comes after Watson lamented earlier on Sunday that police have been outnumbered by the demonstrators, and indicated he wants the federal government to help squash the protest.

“The situation at this point is completely out of control because the individuals with the protest are calling the shots,” Watson told Newstalk radio. “They have far more people than we have police officers and I've indicated to the chief that we have to be much more nimble and proactive when it comes to these activities.”

Declaring a state of emergency reflects the serious danger and threat to the safety and security of residents posed by the ongoing demonstrations and highlights the need for support from other jurisdictions and levels of government

Before announcing the emergency, Watson pleaded with the federal government to “sit down and have some kind of a discussion, some kind of mediation to get this situation resolved because it’s now spreading across the country.”

Watson’s statements echoed an admission from Police Chief Peter Sloly on Saturday. “We do not have sufficient resources to adequately and effectively address this situation while adequately and effectively providing policing in this city,” the top cop said during a meeting with the Ottawa Police Services Board. Referring to the demonstration as a “siege,” he insisted it was “something that is different in our democracy than something I’ve ever experienced in my life.”

Carmaker fined for gas emissions cover-up

Mercedes-Benz to pay millions and fix rigged pollution-mitigation devices to comply with law in South Korea

The Korea Fair Trade Commission (KFTC) on Sunday demanded that major luxury car maker Mercedes-Benz pay $16.87 million in fines for providing falsified information on gas emissions from its diesel cars, Yonhap news agency reported.

The South Korean antitrust regulator discovered that the vehicle producer had installed illegal software on pollution-mitigation devices in some of its cars. The software allowed the devices to perform at lower levels in driving conditions than during certification tests. The vehicles therefore failed to meet the legally allowed emission levels, but the automaker was found to have covered up related facts in signs attached to its cars between April 2012 and November 2018, according to the KFTC.

The automaker also advertised that the cars’ nitrogen oxide emissions were at a minimum level and they fully met the Euro 6 emission standards. The inadequate ads were on 15 Mercedes-Benz models.

“Though Mercedes-Benz claimed that it only used typical phrases about well-known performances of the emission mitigation devices, concealing the intentional implementation of illegal software and claiming its vehicles perform the best are beyond simple exaggeration and deception,” the regulator stated, adding that “such practices will or are feared to hurt fair market order by preventing consumers from making a reasonable decision” when purchasing a car.

Apart from the fine, the KFTC also ordered the carmaker to fix the devices and install qualified software.

In 2021, the South Korean regulator slapped a number of other carmakers with fines or correction orders, including Audi-Volkswagen Korea, Nissan Motor, Stellantis Korea, and Porsche AG for similar emissions-tampering practices.

Undulant fever claims an unknown number of victims each year—un-known because it is a difficult disease to diagnose—while outbreaks of typhoid and paratyphoid fever, dysentry, food poisoning, scarlet fever, and diphtheria

are known to be caused from time to time by the drinking of raw milk. During the war, well authenticated milk-borne examples of each of these diseases were reported in the medical Press. Possibly the noble Lord who replies for the Government may be able to tell your Lordships if there have been any outbreaks of disease caused by drinking contaminated raw milk in the United Kingdom during 1946.

It would appear obvious from the few words I have said that considerable benefits would accrue to the population of this country by removing a perfectly clear cut source of disease and death from the population's milk; and on the assumption that this side of the case is not in dispute, I will turn to the other side which concerns the arguments put forward by the opponents of pasteurization. May I say at the start that I neither can nor shall attempt to deal with the economic aspects of this matter? Your Lordships are well aware that one of the criticisms of any scheme involving the compulsory pasteurization of milk in the United Kingdom is that it will have an adverse effect on the small producer-retailers. Your Lordships may have something to say about the relative merits of killing off numbers of the population each year and maintaining the economic interests of a relatively small section of the community, though the words "as far as is practicable" in my Motion indicate that I appreciate the difficulties of extending any scheme of heat treatment to special or rural parts of the country. The group has not yet announced it’s start date – but says the convoy will be scheduled soon.

The Associated Press has aired its grievances with President Biden's administration after reporters were accused of being 'disloyal' for asking probing questions.

During several encounters last week, when the administration was asked for evidence to back up dramatic claims about national security developments, it simply retorted: 'You'll have to trust us on that.'

The Biden administration appears to be becoming more hostile and wary of reporters that in the past were 'friendly' toward Democratic administrations.

Last week, U.S. State Department spokesperson Ned Price sparred with an AP reporter at a State Department briefing after U.S. officials said Russia was preparing a 'false flag' operation as the opening act for an invasion of Ukraine. The alleged scheme included a staged explosion and enlisting actors to portray people mourning the dead.

'You say that they have taken but you have shown no evidence to confirm that and I'm gonna get to the next question here, which is, what is the evidence that they plan … I mean, this is like crisis actors? Really?' asked Matthew Lee of The Associated Press.

'This is like Alex Jones territory you're getting into there,' he said referring to a well-known conspiracy theorist.

'What evidence do you have to support the idea that there is some propaganda film in the making?'

Price said it was intelligence that had been declassified in order to share it publicly.

'Where is the declassified information?' asked Lee of The AP.

'I just delivered it,' Price said.

'No, you made a series of allegations,' Lee responded.

'I would like to see some proof that … shows that the Russians are doing that,' Lee said.

With the State Department offering no further evidence and Lee continuing to probe, Price suggested he was siding with Russia.

'I'm sorry, you don't like the content,' Price responded. 'I'm sorry you are doubting the information that is in the possession of the U.S. government.'

Price said U.S. officials needed to protect 'sources and methods' and ended their testy five-minute exchange by telling Lee: 'If you doubt the credibility of the U.S. government, of the British government, of other governments, and want to find solace in information that the Russians are putting out that is for you to do.'

He later walked back his comments.

'The renowned @APDiploWriter and I have had our fair share of sparring sessions, and I have the scars to prove it. Clearly, he's no one's dupe, and I'd never want to suggest otherwise. Nothing but respect for him, which I underscored in a call to him after the briefing,' he wrote on Twitter.

It was not the only encounter of the week to have a reporter receive such a testy response from the administration.

Also on Thursday aboard Air Force One en route to New York, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki fielded questions about a U.S. special forces raid in Syria, which resulted in the death of Islamic State leader Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Qurayshi.

U.S. officials said al-Qurayshi killed himself and his family with a suicide bomb, but NPR´s Ayesha Rascoe said there 'may be people that are skeptical of the events that took place and what happened to the civilians.'

Psaki asked whether the reporter was suggesting that 'ISIS is providing accurate information' as opposed to the U.S. military.

'I mean, the U.S. has not always been straightforward about what happens with civilians,' Rascoe responded. 'And I mean, that is a fact.'

Asked about her comments, Psaki said on Friday that 'we welcome tough questions and good faith scrutiny.'

She said officials were committed to providing as much detail as possible about the Syria raid and she was relying on 'firsthand reports from our elite servicemembers' to describe the incident.

Nevertheless, the administration would also not explain their confidence that civilian casualties were caused by a suicide bombing rather than U.S. Special Forces during the raid.

The administration's response took a particularly caustic turn as spokespeople suggested that reporters were buying into foreign propaganda by even asking such questions….

"A driver fleeing a traffic stop may have fallen to his death while leaping between rooftops to escape cops early Sunday, according to police and the walk-up’s super.

Cops found Joley Aristhee dead in the courtyard between 347 and 345 W. 48th St. in Hell’s Kitchen in Manhattan after reports of an intruder on the five-story building’s roof, the super and police sources said.

NYPD officers had tried stopping Aristhee in his car minutes earlier, around 1:50 a.m., for illegally tinted windows, police said. As the suspect was supposedly pulling over for the stop, his car struck a parked vehicle, and Aristhee then hopped out of his car and fled, authorities said.

Officers ran after him but lost him, and then while still canvassing the area for him, got a report of someone suspicious on the roof of the West 48th Street building, officials said. They went to the scene, where theyheard a thudin the back courtyard and eventually found Aristhee’s body, cops said.

Aristhee was pronounced dead at the scene. The building’s super, who gave his name as Steve P., said cops told him the deceased likely got “tangled” on a spike at the top of the structure while trying to jump to the next rooftop and fell.

“He tried to cross over, and he got tangled up in that spike thing,” Steve told The Post, pointing to the roof. “That’s a deterrent for people to go to this roof.”

So, this was the weekend of “surge and contain.”

Like many things we’ve heard from Ottawa police Chief Peter Sloly, it wasn’t entirely clear Friday what he was talking about.

It’s certainly true there were more police officers in the “red zone” around Parliament Hill than last weekend. There were seven or eight Sudbury police officers, for instance, walking around in a pack on the sidewalk — “patrolling” it is probably called, or “surging,” as it were, “containing” who knows what.

But there were barbecues on the go on Wellington Street and wood-burning fires in metal containers and Christian tents set up and fuel containers moving here and there and a religious revival going on in word and song — all on the public roadway — and a ridiculous amount of noise.

So, does it matter if there are 10,000 police officers down there — “surging” or not — if there are no consequences for breaking the rules, for days in a row? More on this in a minute.

There was a quite remarkable “special” meeting of the Ottawa Police Services Board on Saturday.

Bless board member Carol Anne Meehan for her plain-dealing. Though she looked at times as though her head might explode, the Gloucester-South Nepean councillor was seeking an explanation from Sloly about why we haven’t seen much push-back from police against even the most obvious infractions.

“Please, I’m begging you. What’s going to be done here?”

Indeed, she put her finger on a city’s frustration when she further added: “How do we know this will ‘blow up’ if we haven’t done anything except monitor and keep the peace?” (This is in relation to Sloly’s repeated warnings about “massive risk” to anything approaching robust enforcement.)

Part of her frustration, no doubt, is Sloly’s habit of donning his professor hat and giving wordy, off-point answers about lacking the correct “justice system framework” or absent “multi-lateral agreements” between governments and some unhelpful blather about an outdated Police Services Act.

Good Lord, all we really want to know is why you can’t get a bunch of big-ass trucks out of the way, or at least ticket them to death, by the hour if necessary. (On that point, by the way, we’re told we don’t have enough heavy-lift tow trucks to get the removal job done efficiently.)

The good news, though, and maybe Sloly should have been more clear about this, is that actual enforcement is beginning to happen and there is, no doubt, a plan being worked on to tighten the perimeter on the core group of trucking protesters.

The instant “shack” that was set up at Confederation Park, for instance, was moved, then taken away altogether on Sunday afternoon. While it may have been headed to the baseball stadium parking lot on Coventry Road, we’ll take anything as progress at this point.

And Sunday morning brought news the police have, in fact, been doing more than passively patrolling.

The force reports that, since Saturday morning, more than 450 tickets have been written for violations related to the trucker protest, which has now been going on for 10 days.

We’re getting smarter with relation to shutting ramps off the 417 so the influx of farm vehicles Saturday did not have disastrous results. New concrete barriers are, at least visually, creating the feeling of “boxing in” the trucks right on the Hill’s doorsteps.
