Conservative MP Michelle Rempel accused Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of losing "his shit" in the House of Commons Wednesday after he was questioned on the government's proposed changes to Parliament's rules. During a particularly raucous question period โ€” and just hours before the government unveiled its second budget โ€” Rempel rose in the House to ask Trudeau about his reaction to an earlier question from fellow Tory MP Candice Bergen. "This prime minister purports to be a feminist," Rempel said. "Yet when a strong, confident woman dares to question his arrogance and unilaterally changing the fundamentals of Canadian democracy, he tries to stare her down and yell at her."

 

Bergen was hammering Trudeau on a discussion paper the Liberals recently released, which the government said included steps to make the House more efficient and transparent. House cameras were on Bergen at the time and did not show Trudeau's reaction to her question. Among the proposed reforms to the Commons include getting rid of Friday House sittings and setting one day aside for the prime minister to answer questions during question period. The paper does not indicate whether the PM would show up to question period on other days. Opposition parties are warning the proposed modernization will make it harder for them to hold the government to account.

 

Bergen accused Government House Leader Bardish Chagger and the Liberals of trying to "ram" the discussion paper through Parliament. She called the situation "unbelievable" and later recited a quote from former Chinese communist leader Chairman Mao that she said Trudeau would be "familiar" with. "Canada is not China. Canada is not a dictatorship. The prime minister is not the supreme emperor," she said. Rempel later asked if Trudeau would apologize to Bergen or if he would "once again make a woman do his dirty work for him," a presumed dig at Chagger who frequently fields questions on behalf of the prime minister.

 

Chagger rose to say she was very proud of being a "strong woman that's been empowered by the government." "This House needs modernization, this House needs this conversation, this House needs a solid, substantial discussion, and that's exactly what I'm encourage all of us to do." Once question period concluded, Rempel stood on a point of order to accuse Chagger of saying she would "get" her for asking Trudeau a question.

 

"Our purpose during question period is to question the government and hold them to account," Rempel said. "After asking a question today the government House leader looked at me and said 'I'm going to get you for this.'" "In that sense, I believe that my privilege and others' here has been violated and as such I task you and ask you to look into this matter," the Calgary MP told House Speaker Geoff Regan.

 

"Bullying, that's bullying," said another Conservative MP.

 

Chagger denied making the comment and said she has the "utmost respect" for the House. She said she no problem discussing the issue with Rempel and added that she believes MPs could "work better" in the lower chamber.

A city council in California overwhelmingly voted to declare the city a "Constitutional Republic City" to protect its citizensโ€™ rights in light of federal and state mandates.

 

"What we are doing is protecting our citizens' rights as much as we can on the local level," Oroville Vice Mayor Scott Thomson told Fox News Digital.

 

"In a way, we are acting as a sanctuary city for our citizens and their rights and freedoms protected by the U.S. and state constitutions," he added. "Gavin Newsom modeled this type of declaration for us when he declared San Francisco a sanctuary city for what he believed to be overreach by the federal government against his citizens."

 

Thomson requested the measure, which was passed 6-1 by the city council on Nov. 2. The resolution is intended to allow the city to opt out of enforcing "any executive orders issued by the state of California or by the United States federal government that are overreaching or clearly violate our constitutionally protected rights."

The Conservative Party of Canada has named Candice Bergen as interim leader following a private vote late Wednesday evening. Bergen, who had the role of deputy party leader, finished tops among nine candidates in a private preferential ballot.

 

Bergen has represented the Manitoba riding of Portageโ€”Lisgar since 2008. She is replacing Erin Oโ€™Toole, who was ousted earlier Wednesday when 73 MPs voted to replace him. โ€œI want to express my gratitude and respect to [Oโ€™Toole] for his leadership and the sacrifices heโ€™s made for our party and caucus,โ€ Bergen tweeted earlier Wednesday. โ€œThanks also to Rebecca and the Oโ€™Toole family for their dedication and support. Erin is an asset and will continue to be a valued member of our team.โ€

 

Bergen has previously held the role of Minister of State for Social Development in Stephen Harperโ€™s government and served as Opposition House leader under Rona Ambrose. Lori Turnbull, director of Dalhousie Universityโ€™s School of Public Administration, said Bergen brings experience and name recognition to the Conservative party leadership, which can be โ€œa blessing and a curse.โ€ โ€œA lot of people who know her for better or worse would associate her with Harper, with Erin Oโ€™Toole, with Andrew Scheer,โ€ she told CTV News Channel. โ€œIf youโ€™re deciding whether the partyโ€™s going to go in a new direction or keep continuity, sheโ€™s definitely the continuity candidate.โ€ Turnbull added that Bergenโ€™s first order of business would be to try to unite the party, which could be a challenge.

Bergen faced stiff competition for the role, as eight other MPs threw their names in the hat for a chance at leading the party, though not all the candidates stated their intentions publicly. Among those interested in the position were Marilyn Gladu, a Conservative MP for Sarniaโ€“Lambton. โ€œIโ€™ll put my name forward and see what the caucus has to say about that and then weโ€™ll see where we go from there,โ€ she told CTV News Channelโ€™s Power Play earlier on Wednesday.

 

โ€œI think this is an opportunity for a fresh start to unify the party. We definitely need to see that kind of unity and I think the grassroots needs to weigh in on the policy positions that we took in the last election, so we can be successful, expand the base and win the next election.โ€ John Williamson, MP for New Brunswick Southwest, announced in a tweet that he too was among those interested in leading the party. โ€œI know how to keep us united around the things that matter most to us as Conservatives,โ€ he said in a statement posted online. โ€œWe must demonstrate to our supporters and future voters weโ€™re fighting for them โ€“ every day โ€“ with a consistent plan.โ€

 

Rob Moore, MP for the Fundy Royal riding of New Brunswick, had also thrown his name into the ring. Moore is currently the shadow cabinet minister for Justice. โ€œNow, more than anytime since prime minister [Stephen] Harper left office, our party needs sensible, experienced, and above all else, principled, Conservative leadership,โ€ he said in a statement.

 

HIGH-PROFILE NAMES NOT INTERESTED IN LEADERSHIP

When it comes to who might be interested in leading the party long-term,there are also several high-profile Conservatives whoโ€™ve stated they donโ€™t intend run. In a statement to CTV News, former interim Conservative leader Rona Ambrose said she isnโ€™t interested. โ€œItโ€™s really hard to see whatโ€™s happening and not jump back in to help,โ€ she said. โ€œMy heart says yes but my head says no. Iโ€™m not going to go back at this juncture in my life. Our kids are at the age where they need us and I am enjoying being in business.โ€ Earlier this week, both Ontario Premier Doug Ford and Alberta Premier Jason Kenney said they are not interested in federal leadership and are instead focused on their respective provinces. โ€œMy hands are full,โ€ Ford told reporters on Tuesday. โ€œI love being premier of this province. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken has questioned why Russia deployed troops. Americaโ€™s top diplomat said Sunday on ABC-TVโ€™s โ€œThis Weekโ€ that Kazakhstan โ€œhas the ability to maintain law and order, to defend the institutions of the state, but to do so in a way that respects the rights of peaceful protesters and also addresses the concerns that theyโ€™ve raised โ€” economic concerns, some political concerns.โ€

 

Demanding regime change

 

Sparked by a fuel price increase and cost of living grievances, the protests, which began in the oil-rich western part of the country, rapidly escalated this week into the worst violence Kazakhstan has seen since its independence 30 years ago.

 

Grievances over fuel prices voiced initially by the protesters grew into a much bigger threat against the government after dozens of people died when Kazakh armed forces opened fire into the crowd.

 

Demonstrators have demanded regime change and the departures of Tokayev and the countryโ€™s 81-year-old former leader Nursultan Nazarbayev, who stepped down two years ago after nearly three decades in power. Nazarbayev, who retained the official title of โ€œleader of the nation,โ€ is still believed to rule behind the scenes. Protesters reference him with chants of โ€œGet out, old man.โ€

 

The demonstrations prompted Tokayev to dismiss his Cabinet and Nazarbayev from his position as head of the countryโ€™s security council. Authorities also announced the arrest of Karim Massimov, former head of the National Security Committee, on suspicion of high treason.

The family of late entrepreneur John McAfee is still trying to get his body released from a Spanish prison more than seven months after his death, according to a MarketWatch report.

 

After speaking to several people involved in the case, senior reporter Jon Swartz wrote on Wednesday that McAfeeโ€™s body is still in a โ€œprison morgue freezer somewhere in or near Barcelonaโ€ as a Spanish judge has yet to conclude their investigation into McAfeeโ€™s death.

 

McAfee โ€“ a US citizen who founded anti-virus company McAfee Corp โ€“ was imprisoned in Spain in October 2020 over US tax evasion charges. After a Spanish court authorized his extradition to the US in June 2021, McAfee was found dead at the age of 75 in his prison cell from an apparent suicide. The case, however, generated a significant amount of controversy after McAfeeโ€™s wife claimed she did not believe her husband killed himself.

 

Swartz reported on Wednesday that while it remains unclear why McAfeeโ€™s body has not been released from Spain, his wife and his daughter were separately fighting for custody. Swartz also reported that the final investigation report by Spanish Judge Victor Espigares Jimenez into McAfeeโ€™s death had not yet been made.

 

Joy Athanasiou, the attorney who is representing McAfeeโ€™s daughter Jen, told MarketWatch that to her knowledge, Spanish authorities โ€œhave done nothing to the bodyโ€ and โ€œit has been sitting there [in a freezer] all these months.โ€

 

Attorney Nishay Sanan, who represented McAfee in prison, said that it was โ€œone of the strangest cases I have seen in my career.โ€

 

While McAfeeโ€™s daughter initially sought to have her fatherโ€™s body cremated and transported back to the US, she has allegedly since given up her claim to the body โ€œto prevent additional delay of her fatherโ€™s burial.โ€

7 American helicopters took part last night in an operation to land American special forces in northern Syria between the towns of Atma and Deir Balut,

 

The mission = capture of a senior member of the ISIS organization responsible for the events in al-Sana'a prison, an incident in which hundreds of members of the organization were killed in the past two weeks.

 

The forces that were deployed were shot at from machine gun on the ground, and a number of fighters were reportedly injured.
