Memphis BLM founder Pamela Moses sentenced to 6 years for illegally voting

The founder of the Black Lives Matter chapter in Memphis has been sentenced to prison for six years for illegally registering to vote in Tennessee, prosecutors said.

Pamela Moses, the 44-year-old activist, was ordered to spend six years and one day behind bars Monday for registering to vote despite felony convictions in 2015 that made her ineligible to do so, Shelby County District Attorney General. Amy Weirich said.

In handing down the sentence, Judge Michael Ward accused her of deceiving the probation department to obtain the right to vote,

โ€œYou tricked the probation department into giving you documents saying you were off probation,โ€ Ward said in court, the Washington Post reported.

ANOTHER example: The vaccines are consistently referred to as our โ€˜superweaponโ€™. And our hospitals are called โ€˜superhospitalsโ€™. Nevertheless, these super-hospitals are apparently maximally pressured, even though almost the entire population is armed with a super-weapon. Even children have been vaccinated on a huge scale, which has not been done in our neighboring countries.

 

IN OTHER WORDS, there is something here that does not deserve the term โ€˜superโ€™. Whether itโ€™s the vaccines, the hospitals, or a mixture of it all, is every manโ€™s bid. But at least the authoritiesโ€™ communication to the population in no way deserves the term โ€˜superโ€™. On the contrary.

FOX and Friends Weekend host Rachel Campos-Duffy rebuked the fascists at Facebook, Twitter, GoFundMe, etc. on Sunday comparing them to the Communist Chinese.

 

This comes after GoFundMe announced on Friday they would steal donations for the Canadian Freedom Convoy 2022 and donate it to charities of their choice. On Saturday morning the officials at GoFundMe backtracked and decided to return the millions in donations after Florida Governor Ron DeSantis announced they would investigate the fundraising platform for theft and deceptive marketing practices.

Pete Hegseth reported that Facebook and others are already shutting down the group sites and pages in support of American Trucker Convoys. Campos-Duffy compared these platforms to the Chinese Communists who pushed the Dutch reporter off the screen during a live presentation this week.

Canadian Government Proudly Admits to Requesting GoFundMe to Withhold Trucker Convoy Donations โ€“ Begs Other Crowdfunding Sites to Follow Suit

 

On Friday, GoFundMe removed the $10 million Canadian Trucker Freedom Convoy 2022 fundraiser.

 

Hours after the digital highway robbery, the Ottawa Police Department (OPD) tweeted out a statement that thanked the crowdfunding platform for caving to the cityโ€™s demands to withhold funding from the protesters.

 

The OPD statement also called on other platforms to follow suit, while labeling the grassroots movement against Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeauโ€™s authoritarianism an โ€œunlawful demonstration.โ€

 

โ€œWe want to thank GoFundMe for listening to our concerns as a City and a police service. The decision to withhold funding for these unlawful demonstrations is an important step and we call on all crowdfunding sites to follow.โ€

 

Like a true fascist, Ottawaโ€™s Mayor Jim Watson also praised GoFundMe for their decision to defraud donors and steal the money away from the truckers.

 

Just like the OPD, Watson also called the demonstrators โ€œunlawfulโ€ and asked all other crowdfunding platforms to choke off funding to the protest, because, he โ€œhopes,โ€ they will not be able to stay in the city without outside โ€œfunding and resources.โ€

 

โ€œI want to sincerely thank the team at GoFundMe for listening to the plea made by the City and the Ottawa Police to no longer provide funds to the convoy organizersโ€

 

 

โ€œIn light of the unlawful behaviour that has transpired in the last few days, they have come to the right decision in support of our city and our residents.

 

These protesters have been holding our city hostage for a week now, and iโ€™m hopeful that limiting their access to funding and resources will restrict their ability to remain in Ottawa.

Authorities expressed concern about drug dealing and VRโ€™s influence on the physical world

 

Regulators in Russia are looking into the possibility of new restrictions on virtual reality (VR), saying they are worried that it could enable illegal activity, while acknowledging that the โ€œmetaverseโ€ also offers new possibilities for human interaction.

 

The Scientific Technical Center of Roskomnadzor, the federal agency responsible for monitoring mass media, released a report on Wednesday, assessing what it sees as the potential risks and possibilities of VR spaces where people are able to interact across national borders.

 

The term โ€œmetaverse,โ€ which comes out of science fiction, refers to 3D virtual worlds focused on human social connection, and it has increasingly been the focus of tech companies, including the US company Facebook, which recently rebranded as Meta.

 

According to the report, the metaverse could lend itself to illegal transactions conducted in cryptocurrency, including trade between people of different nationalities that could violate border regulations. The authors claim that virtual spaces would be ripe for drug dealing or trafficking of other banned substances.

 

The report also cites concerns about the consequences that virtual interaction has for human behavior. Lukashenko Vows Belarus Will Fight By Russia's Side If Ukraine War Starts

 

On Saturday Russia sent a pair of long range nuclear-capable bombers over Belarus in a message to Ukraine and NATO. The Associated Press detailed of the patrol, "The Russian Defense Ministry said the two Tu-22M3 bombers practiced interacting with the Belarusian air force and air defense during a four-hour mission."

 

Simultaneously, some regional governments in Ukraine are reportedly holding 'civil defense' drills for residents, which has included regular citizens arming themselves, fearing the widely circulating reports of a "Russian invasion" coming.

 

Over the weekend Belarus' longtime leader and close Putin ally, President Alexander Lukashenko, vowed military support for any Russian military mission that would be in response to a Ukrainian attack in Donbass. While downplaying the likelihood of a major war, Lukashenko predicted that if it happened, "it will last for three or four days at most." Dismissing Ukrainian forces' capabilities, he said, "There is no one there to fight us."

 

He described that Belarus, like Russia, also has "red lines" in place and that the first step would be cutting off energy, fuel, and industrial supplies to its neighbor to the south: "We will not supply it if they start a war against us or Russia," the Belarusian leader said, according to a translation in Russian media.

 

Lukashenko echoed Kremlin accusations of Washington ultimately stoking tensions in order to draw Russian into a conflict, so that Moscow and its allies would be severely isolated and sanctioned:

 

"This is just the essence of the war, about which you and we are having debates now: 'Ukraine will fight'. Well, it is not Ukraine, it is Americans who are pushing it [Ukraine] to war", Lukashenko told the Russian YouTube show "Soloviev Live".

 

"Do they not see it? Therefore, they understand that it is futile to fight with us, especially with Russia. We are not talking about some kind of nuclear and other weapons. But it is better not to touch us", Lukashenko said.

 

Already, Russia has deployed advanced missile defense systems to Belarus, along with jets, bombers, and other major military assets - largely in preparation for joint military drills.

The so-called 'union agreement' between Russia and Belarus goes back to the 1990's, and amid the recent standoff with NATO, the two countries have only deepened their military cooperation, with the Kremlin recently installing early warning radar systems and naval command centers there. Lately, the Biden administration has warned Russia against sending more troops to Belarus, which the US says could number up to 30,000 deployed there.

Mark Zuckerberg could face jail time under new law, minister warns

 

UK Culture Secretary Nadine Dorries said Big Tech bosses could โ€˜absolutelyโ€™ be held responsible for failing to remove harmful online content

 

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and other Big Tech executives risk ending up in jail if their social media platforms do not block content deemed harmful under upcoming online safety laws, UK Culture Secretary Nadine Dorries has warned.

 

Speaking to Times Radio on Saturday, Dorries said Zuckerberg, who heads Meta, Facebookโ€™s parent company, and other tech bosses could โ€œabsolutelyโ€ be put behind bars if they did not comply with the governmentโ€™s draft Online Safety Bill. She expressed hope that the legislation would be a โ€œnotice to the online platforms to say here it is, weโ€™re letting you know what it is now, so start doing what you need to do.โ€

 

Under the billโ€™s proposed โ€˜duty of careโ€™ regime, communications regulator Ofcomโ€™s powers could jail tech executives for up to two years for failing to remove illegal content, The Telegraph reported. The government had announced on Friday that several new criminal offenses had been added to the bill, including revenge porn, hate crime, fraud, the sale of illegal drugs or weapons, the promotion or facilitation of suicide, people-smuggling, and sexual exploitation.

 

The government claimed that naming these offenses would enable Ofcom to take enforcement action against non-compliant firms more quickly. But Dorries said these platforms โ€œdonโ€™t need to wait for the billโ€ since they โ€œhave the powers to [take action] now.โ€

 

What [tech firms] need to do now is to remove those harmful algorithms on [their] platforms. Stop directing people to suicide chat rooms, stop allowing [pile-on] hate, stop allowing people-trafficking, stop allowing threats of hate, violence and rape, and remove it all now.

 

However, critics like the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC) have dismissed her claims as โ€œrhetoric.โ€

 

Andy Burrows, NSPCC head of child safety online policy, told The Independent that โ€œtech bosses wouldnโ€™t be personally liable for the harmful effects of their algorithms or failing to prevent grooming, and could only be prosecuted for failing to supply information to the regulator.โ€

 

Meanwhile, the Labour Party called for tougher sanctions against senior tech executives, with shadow culture secretary Lucy Powell stating that Ofcom would face a โ€œDavid and Goliath situationโ€ when โ€œtaking on some of the biggest tech firms in the worldโ€ and needed โ€œaccess to the full range of tools in its belt, including making top bosses criminally liable for persistently failing to tackle online harms.โ€

 

Meta or other tech giants have not commented on Dorriesโ€™ claims as yet.

Memphis BLM founder Pamela Moses sentenced to 6 years for illegally voting

 

The founder of the Black Lives Matter chapter in Memphis has been sentenced to prison for six years for illegally registering to vote in Tennessee, prosecutors said.

 

Pamela Moses, the 44-year-old activist, was ordered to spend six years and one day behind bars Monday for registering to vote despite felony convictions in 2015 that made her ineligible to do so, Shelby County District Attorney General. Amy Weirich said.

 

In handing down the sentence, Judge Michael Ward accused her of deceiving the probation department to obtain the right to vote,

 

โ€œYou tricked the probation department into giving you documents saying you were off probation,โ€ Ward said in court, the Washington Post reported.

 

In 2015, Moses pleaded guilty to tampering with evidence and forgery, both felonies, and to misdemeanor charges of perjury, stalking, theft under $500, and escape.

 

She was placed on probation for seven years and deemed ineligible to vote in Tennessee because of the tampering with evidence charge.

 

Moses has maintained that she was under the impression that her voting rights had been restored when she went to vote in 2019.

 

โ€œI did not falsify anything. All I did was try to get my rights to vote back the way the people at the election commission told me and the way the clerk did,โ€ she said at the hearing.

 

Her attorney, Bede Anyanwu, said that his client plans to appeal the sentencing.

 

โ€œShe believes the sentencing was beyond the evidence that was presented,โ€ he told the Washington Post.

Well, UPennโ€™s technology did end up getting used in the mRNA-based Coronavirus vaccine produced by Pfizer and BioNTech, and the deal has led to massive revenue for the university. FDA Restores Document on Moderna COVID-19 Vaccine Approval After Pressure From Epoch Times, Lawmakers

 

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has restored a document outlining why it approved Modernaโ€™s COVID-19 vaccine, days after the regulatory agency pulled the 30-page file offline after receiving questions about it from The Epoch Times.

 

No explanation has been given for why the document vanished hours after the questions were sent, but the removal triggered pushback from the National Vaccine Information Center and multiple members of Congress.

 

โ€œThe coincidental removal of the approval documents for the Moderna vaccine is another massive blow to the credibility of the FDA, and I call on the agency to release this document immediately,โ€ Rep. Byron Donalds (R-Fla.), a member of the House Oversight Committee, told The Epoch Times via email on Feb. 4.

 

The document in question is called the Summary Basis for Regulatory Action (SBRA) and was made public on Feb. 1, one day after the FDA approved Modernaโ€™s jab without consulting its expert advisory panel.

 

After The Epoch Times sent questions about critical portions of the document, it disappeared from the agencyโ€™s website.

 

It popped back up after multiple emails and phone calls from The Epoch Times.

 

Spokespersons have declined to explain what happened.

 

The document, embedded below, includes the highest government estimate yet for post-vaccination heart inflammation cases. An FDA meta-analysis of data from four health care claims databases estimated that, among males aged 18 to 25, the rate of myocarditis following Modernaโ€™s primary series was 148 per million males vaccinated. Myocarditis is a form of heart inflammation that can lead to death, though most cases do not.

 

The FDA has declined so far to provide a copy of the meta-analysis or a copy of another document referred to in the SBRA, a quantitative, age-stratified benefit-risk analysis in males 18 and older to evaluate the benefits and risks of Modernaโ€™s vaccine.

FDA, Doctorsโ€™ Group Reach Agreement on Production of Pfizer Vaccine Documents

 

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) must produce 10,000 pages by March 1 and another 10,000 pages by April 1 in response to the Freedom of Information Act request and subsequent lawsuit by the Public Health and Medical Professionals for Transparency, according to the agreement, which was approved by the judge overseeing the case on Feb. 2.

 

The FDA must then produce 80,000 additional pages in three tranches, one due May 2, one due June 1, and one due July 1.

 

The regulatory agency was ordered to produce 70,000 pages by Aug. 1 and then 55,000 pages on or before the first business of each month thereafter.

San Jose Mayor Talks About Seizing Guns from Owners Who Donโ€™t Pay City Fee

 

San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo (D) spoke to Slate about seizing firearms from people who refuse to pay the cityโ€™s new $25 gun ownersโ€™ fee or comply with the cityโ€™s new liability insurance requirement for gun owners.

 

Breitbart News reported that San Joseโ€™s city council passed the fee ordinance and the liability insurance ordinance on January 25, 2022.

 

Slate notes the city fee is $25 and quotes Mayor Liccardo saying the funds collected will go to a foundation overseen by โ€œStanford professors, an epidemiologist who has been focused on gun harm, and nonprofit experts who understand domestic violence prevention programs, suicide prevention.โ€

 

Liccardo explained that the ordinance requiring the fee is โ€œcivil,โ€ rather than criminal in nature. However, he made clear that failure to pay the fee can result of seizure of a firearm.

 

He said:

 

For example, thereโ€™s a bar brawl and theyโ€™re patting down everybody and someoneโ€™s got a gun. โ€œHave you paid your fee? You have insurance?โ€ โ€œNo.โ€ OK, well, thereโ€™s an opportunity for us to remove the gun. And then when the gun owner comes back and demonstrates that they comply with the law and theyโ€™re a lawful gun owner, they get their gun back. But in the meantime, youโ€™ve taken a gun out of a bar brawl. And thatโ€™s not a bad thing.

 

Liccardo then took exception to the suggestion the city fee is actually a tax on guns:

 

I donโ€™t blame anyone for being emotional about this. These are really important issues that go to the core of what we believe about freedoms and rights and our own safety. But Iโ€™d say this. First, itโ€™s a fee, itโ€™s not a tax, and I wonโ€™t go into the details about what the difference is, but the reality is that in this country, there have been taxes on guns and ammunition since at least 1919, and theyโ€™ve been upheld by the courts. So the fact that thereโ€™s a constitutional right attached somewhere to the exercise of a particular activity doesnโ€™t mean it canโ€™t be regulated, taxed, or have a fee imposed.

 

The text of the Second Amendment ends with four words, โ€œShall not be infringed.โ€

German Interior Minister Allegedly Wrote For Far-Left Antifa Publication

 

German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser has been accused of writing an article for a far-left Antifa publication run by a group that has been accused of having ties to extremism by the Bavarian office of the German domestic intelligence agency.

 

Faeser, a member of the Social Democrats (SPD) who became German Interior Minister last year in December, allegedly penned an article for an Antifa magazine last year run by the Bund der Antifaschistinnen und Antifaschisten (VVN-BdA), a group that has been listed as an extremist outfit for years by the Bavarian Office for the Protection of the Constitution.

 

The article, which was published in July of last year, however, the existence of the article was, however, only highlighted this week by the German conservative newspaper Junge Freiheit.

 

The article concerned the 116 letters that were sent to various politicians, activists, artists, and others from August of 2018 to March of 2021, containing death threats and racial hatred. and signed as โ€œNSU 2.0โ€.

 

The letters were signed by โ€œNSU 2.0โ€, a reference to the National Socialist Underground (NSU), a neo-Nazi terrorist group that operated from 2000 to 2007 and carried out ten murders, two bombings, and robbed a number of banks across the country.

 

โ€œMost of the NSU 2.0 letters are full of disgusting right-wing fantasies of the destruction of dissenters. And all this news has one goal: to intimidate those who stand up for tolerance, freedom, cosmopolitanism, and the democratic rule of law in public,โ€ Faeser allegedly wrote in the article.

 

A 53-year-old man was later arrested and charged in connection to the NSU 2.0 letters in October of last year and in her article, Faeser blames the internet saying, โ€œAnd itโ€™s probably really true that he wrote his disgusting pamphlets without outside help. But he certainly did it in the awareness that he was not alone.โ€

 

โ€œBecause in order to network, to strengthen each other in racial delusion and fascist fantasies, the internet is enough for the right-wing extremists today. This is where the ideological trailblazers meet their useful idiots. There, deluded people become violent offenders,โ€ Faeser is said to have written and added, โ€œWithout the internet as a global radicalization machine, the growing right-wing extremism of the 21st century is inconceivable.โ€

 

The article continued by saying that the โ€œfight against fascism and right-wing extremism, racism and ethnic ideologiesโ€ is part of the โ€œpolitical DNAโ€ of the SDP, adding that it is important to stand โ€œagainst right-wing ideas, right-wing threats, and right-wing violence. Every day and in every placeโ€.

Pipeline Politics: Ex German Chancellor Gerhard Schrรถder Nominated to Board of Russian State-Owned Gas Company

 

Gerhard Schrรถder, the former left-leaning Chancellor of Germany, has been nominated to the board of a Russian state-owned gas company.

 

The move to nominate Schrรถder to the board of Gazprom has prompted mass outcry amongst German politicians, while the country as a whole has been slammed as of late for its overreliance on Russian natural gas.

 

According to a report from POLITICO, Gerhard Schrรถder was on an official list of candidates for the board of directors that was published on Friday. Names for the board will be voted on during a shareholdersโ€™ meeting in St. Petersburg that is slated for June.

 

If elected, this will be far from the first senior position on a Russian energy company the ex-chancellor has held, with German public broadcaster Deutsche Welle reporting that he is also serving as chairman of the supervisory board of Russian state energy company Rosneft, chairman of the shareholdersโ€™ committee for Nord Stream AG, and as president of the board of directors at Nord Stream 2 AG.

 

Of particular note is the fact that Schrรถder was the one to initially approve the Nord Stream 2 project during his time as Germanyโ€™s Chancellor, a project that has since come under heavy fire for making Germany too reliant on Russian energy.

 

The ex-German Chancellor is also well known for being very good friends with Russian President Vladimir Putin and has more recently taken to social media to decry the boycotts of the Beijing Olympics over the numerous human rights abuses committed by the communist regime in Hong Kong, Tibet, and Xinjiang.

 

โ€œBoycott the Olympics in Beijing? No!โ€ Schrรถder wrote online. โ€œAnyone who wants to put pressure on China with boycott demands and moralizing foreign policy is playing a dangerous game.โ€

When Silicon Valley product designer Chris Messina became the 19th person to join Instagram in 2010 he was hoping to change the world.

'I'm sure that there was some vague awareness perhaps about that risk in the early days of social mediaโ€ฆ I don't want to say we were blinded by ambition but blinded by the desire to get this stuff out there and then we'd sort it out.

 

'Part of this was a selection bias. We were seeing people having a great time and using these things for good and, I think, that, at least for me, propelled me to continue to believe that bringing more access to more people was a net good as opposed to just saying: "OK, you know what? Humans aren't ready for this. Let's give it up".

 

'I still love Instagram. And I really hope that it's able to sort of figure out how to navigate this space and get back to what it wanted to be. But I can't say that I'm holding my breath for that to happen.'

The high-risk gamble is part of the Duke of York's 'unclean hands' defence strategy, which will see his lawyers argue Ms Roberts does not deserve damages because she was complicit in a 'criminal enterprise'.

 

But the move could backfire against the royal, as his witness, Carolyn Andriano, recently corroborated claims that Ms Roberts had sex with Andrew at Maxwell's London home when she was 17 - meaning she could do so yet again under oath.

 

'It's potentially a double-edged sword,' a source familiar with the duke's strategy told the Times.

 

Andrew's team are now looking for other women who may have been recruited by Ms Roberts while under age.

 

'We are interested in speaking with and interviewing anyone and everyone who has information relevant to these allegations,' the source added.

 

Ms Roberts is suing Andrew in New York over claims she was trafficked by paedophile financier Epstein and forced to have sex with the prince on three occasions when she was 17. Andrew vehemently denies the claims.

 

It emerged this weekend that the Duke of York is set to meet lawyers representing Ms Roberts in London on March 10, where he will testify under oath according to sources close to the royal.

 

'We agreed to voluntarily produce the Duke for a deposition on March 10. Despite repeated requests, Ms. Giuffre (Roberts) still hasn't committed to a date or location for her deposition,' a source close to the Duke said on Saturday.

 

The news broke just a day before the Queen, Andrew's mother, is set to mark her 70th year on the throne as part of her Platinum Jubilee celebrations.

 

The Prince is being prepared by his UK-based legal team as he prepares to face a grilling over the span of two days by David Boies, 80, one of America's most renowned attorneys, and Sigrid McCawley.

 

Andrew, who was stripped of all his military titles and royal peerages last month after the case was confirmed as going to trial, will be questioned about three alleged assaults in 2001.

 

Meanwhile, Ms Andriano looks set to form a key part of Andrew's defence.

At 10:00 p.m. on December 3, 1973, a 37-year old trucker from Overland Park, Kansas named J.W. Edwards stopped his rig suddenly in the middle of Interstate I-80 near Blakeslee, Pennsylvania and picked up his CB radio microphone. The insurrection he was about to start, using his now-famous handle โ€œRiver Rat,โ€ would give Americaโ€™s independent truckers their first national voice and, along the way, elevate them to folk-hero status.

 

Edwards was beyond frustrated and scared for his livelihood. His job hauling meat from the Midwest to New York had become an agonizing slog because an oil embargoโ€”levied by the Middle Eastern petroleum-producing cartel OPEC against the United States for its support of Israelโ€”had dramatically jacked up diesel fuel prices. With rationing imposed, he was stopping at every virtually filling station along his route. Worse still, the federal government was considering a national maximum speed limit of 55 m.p.h. For long-haul drivers, time lost meant money lost, and oil geopolitics had made Edwardsโ€™s $12,000-a-year job even more precarious. Near Blakeslee, his tank reached empty. Out of fuel, but full of frustration that truckers were the forgotten little guys in the global fossil-fuel wars, Edwards decided, on the spot, to take to his CB and make some noise.

 

In the 1970s, truck drivers commonly used Citizens Band (CB) radio to alert their fellow big-rig drivers to traffic conditions, choice fueling spots and lurking police traps. Without proper FCC radio licenses and reluctant to announce their real names over the airwaves, truckers assumed fanciful โ€œhandlesโ€ and developed colorful slang. They called diesel fuel motion lotion. They dubbed toll booths cash registers. Police became bears: Smokey bears for state troopers who wore campaign hats like Smokey the Bear, bears in the air for police helicopters. Feeding the bears meant paying for a ticketโ€”something more truckers were doing due to new speed restrictions. The OPEC embargo accelerated the CBโ€™s popularity, mostly because it allowed drivers to share places to find motion lotion.

 

The protest goes national

As other truckers stopped to help Edwards, he broadcast via CB that he was blocking the interstate to protest high gas prices, limited fuel supply and the proposed speed limit. Instantly, he found sympathy. One trucker stated, โ€œIf a man is going to be broke, he might as well go broke sitting still.โ€ Others, with handles like Flying Dutchman and Captain Zag, soon joined in. Within an hour, hundreds of rigs came to a halt on I-80. The action paralyzed more than 1,000 vehicles in a jam that extended 12 miles in both directions.

 

News of River Ratโ€™s protest spread, and within hours, trucker demonstrations peppered the nationโ€™s highways, with thousands slowing or stopping their vehicles, snarling travel for miles. By December 4, more than 10 states saw demonstrations by angry drivers who demanded to be heard by the federal governmentโ€”and werenโ€™t afraid to hold up their deliveries to do so. One quipped that he didnโ€™t think Congress would act โ€œuntil those people run out of toilet paper.โ€ The vast majority of dissenting truckers were independents who owned and operated their vehicles, unlike unionized Teamsters who typically hauled for large shipping companies. Independents hauled about 70% of the countryโ€™s freight, according to Interstate Commerce Commission estimates. Most had their entire lives mortgaged into their expensive rigs and had the most to lose from the embargo. Ironically, River Rat Edwards was not an owner-operator himself.

 

Leaders listen, but sit on their hands

The nationwide strikes lasted three days, with the federal government initially shrugging off the problem to the states. Most of the protests were peaceable, but in Ohio, the governor deployed the National Guard to remove trucks by force and use tear gas to disperse recalcitrant drivers.

 

Some leaders met with truckers. In Pennsylvania, a sympathetic Governor Milton Shapp sat down with Edwards and his colleagues on December 5. Shapp, whose own first job was driving a coal truck, said he would work to get more fuel allocated for rigs, a promise that temporarily mollified the strikers. In a three-hour meeting in Washington, D.C., Treasury Secretary Claude S. Brinegar also promised relief, impressing Edwards: โ€œHeโ€™s as honest as he can possibly be and fair. I donโ€™t believe the Queen of England would have received better treatment.โ€ Afterward, with the help of a high-powered Coast Guard CB transmitter, River Rat broadcast a โ€œcool itโ€ message for several hours, calling to end the strikes. Most, but not all, obeyed.

Truckers get organized

Because these brief protests failed to significantly disrupt the countryโ€™s supply chain, government officials sat on their promises. With fuel prices still surging, independent truckers continued their work stoppages, including a two-day strike on December 13 and 14. To keep as many trucks as possible idle, zealous protestors harassed and sabotaged nonparticipating operators, slashing tires, shooting vehicles and in one instance stabbing a driver.

 

Truckers realized they needed to organize, and almost instantly, dozens of independent trucking associations formed. Edwards himself became the first president of the Owner-Operators Independent Drivers Association, or OOIDAโ€”but didnโ€™t stay long. โ€œJ.W. was a colorful guy and could tell a story with the best of them, but he wasnโ€™t an owner-operator,โ€ says Todd Spencer, OOIDAโ€™s current president. โ€œHe figured out pretty quickly he was in over his head.โ€

 

Protests continued into 1974, culminating in a major strike coordinated among the newly formed trucker associations. On January 31, 1974, commerce ground to a halt as the independents garaged their rigs and blockaded roads. At times they grew violent, dropping bricks off overpasses onto moving rigs.

 

Truckers gain concessionsโ€”and visibility

An agreement between government officials and a six-man team of truckers was finally reached on February 7, 1974 that allowed owner-operators to add a temporary 6 percent fuel surcharge to their freight fees and guaranteed that truck stops would receive additional fuel to meet trucker demand. Acceptance among the different trucking associations was slow, but by February 11, with the feds threatening to send in troops, most rigs rolled back onto the road. The strikes had caused about 100,000 layoffs, several deaths and nationwide food and goods shortages.

 

For drivers, the disruptions of 1973-4 changed everything. For the first time, government began to recognize small, independent truckers as a force. Groups like OOIDA went on to play a critical role in helping shape rules and regulations, such as fighting corrupt truck-inspection practices and lobbying to repeal the national maximum speed limit. Until then, lawmakers had only heard from the very largest trucking companies, shippers and organized labor, said OOIDAโ€™s Spencer: โ€œPeople in Washington, D.C. had no idea who all these small-business truckers really were in 1973โ€”that they even existed.โ€

The purpose is to create a mirage of consensus in order to discourage real journalists or normal people from looking into matters themselves. This tactic is pervasive, but nowhere has it been more widely employed than in the COVID era.

 

Because, if three key facts were permitted to infect the public consciousness, they would inevitably result in mass upheaval of the ruling class that perches on top of society, feeding on it like vultures:

 

A.) the original virus almost certainly escaped from a Wuhan lab (if it wasnโ€™t purposely released; letโ€™s not underestimate the hubris of the biomedical state). Worse, that leaky Chinese lab relied on funding from the United States National Institutes of Health (funneled through a โ€œnon-profitโ€ called EcoHealth Alliance) to perform dangerous the gain-of-function research on bat coronaviruses.

B.) The vaccines (which are actually mRNA gene therapies) do not work to prevent infection as promised and cause extensive side effects that were covered up in the original trials.

C.) The โ€œsocial distancingโ€ lockdown measures โ€“ which plunged untold billions worldwide into poverty, death, and despair โ€“ were totally ineffective at preventing the spread of the virus: โ€œShelter-in-place orders had no detectable health benefits.โ€ Imagine the criminality of all the suffering for no good reason.

In his first meeting with US Ambassador to Israel Tom Nides on Friday, IDF chief of staff Aviv Kohavi expressed regret over the death of a 78-year-old Palestinian-American man who suffered a heart attack after being bound, gagged and abandoned at a construction site in the middle of winter by Israeli soldiers last month.

 

Kohavi โ€œmade clear that this was a grave moral incident that is contrary to the values of the IDF,โ€ an Israeli military statement on the meeting said, reiterating the one issued on the findings of the IDFโ€™s internal probe into the January 12 incident death of Omar Asโ€™ad.

 

Kohavi also confirmed to Nides that a criminal investigation into the incident is ongoing and that disciplinary actions had already been taken against the officers involved. Two officers were removed from their positions and a third was formally censured.

 

Asโ€™adโ€™s death sparked a sharp response from the Biden administration, with the State Department emphasizing in the multiple statements issued on the matter that it takes the safety of its nationals abroad very seriously.

Every year, no matter where the Super Bowl is hosted, experts say there's a spike in the demand for sex-trafficking victims. Sometimes those victims are children.

 

"Many of those hotel rooms were full with children and minors," said Alan Smyth, executive director of Saving Innocence, a nonprofit group that rescues children from sex traffickers. "And for some, that's a welcome revelation and others not necessarily, but they already paid their money and they showed up and, 'This is what I'm doing.' They've already kind of sold that part of their soul. Once they've crossed the line to actually buy a human being for their own personal gratification, it's a pretty small leap then. They're not going to split hairs in terms of what the age is and those kinds of things. It's pretty heartbreaking for the kids."

 

The youngest sex-trafficking victim Saving Innocence has helped was just 7 years old.

 

"Anyone coming to the Super Bowl is wealthy," Smyth said in an interview with ABC7. "The cost of getting into the Super Bowl and going to stay in the expensive hotels and buying the meals. They're not here just for the game. They're probably here for several days, and there's a small percentage of mostly men that will use that as an opportunity, as part of their entertainment to have some form of sexual encounter."

 

Los Angeles is already one of the worst cities for human trafficking because of its busy international airport and proximity to the U.S.-Mexico border. And yet 83% of sex trafficking victims in the U.S. are U.S. citizens, according to the Department of Justice.

 

Oree Freeman is a survivor of child sex trafficking. She was sold on the streets of L.A. thousands of times, from when she was 11 years old until she was 15.

 

"It's about a grace of God that I'm still alive, out of the things that I experienced," she told ABC7.

 

Oree says predators can now target anyone because of social media.

 

"You think, 'Not my child'? Does your children have access to social media? Does your child have access to the internet? No, your child is a vulnerable youth," she said. "It's not just this minority kid, although it might be a large percentage. It's not this minority kid from South Central L.A. that grew up in the projects or in the 'hood that gets exploited. It's also those kids that are on Instagram, on websites and talking to sugar daddies and thinking, 'All I'm gonna do is give somebody a massage,' and they end up in a lifestyle that they don't know how far it's going to take them."

 

As the city of Inglewood prepares to host Super Bowl LVI, about fourteen groups, including Saving Innocence, are collaborating with the NFL and the Rams as part of the South Los Angeles Anti-Human Trafficking Committee.

 

Special agents from the Department of Homeland Security are also working quietly in the area.

At least 318 media outlets have closed since the fall of the Western-backed government in 33 of 34 provinces in Afghanistan, the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) said.

 

The IFJ in a report on Thursday expressed concerns over the status of Afghan media community.

 

โ€œThe crisis has hit newspapers the hardest with just 20 out of 114 continuing to publish,โ€ the report read. โ€œ51 TV stations, 132 radio stations and 49 online media outlets have ceased operations according to the report compiled for the IFJ.โ€

 

Based on the report, only 2,334 journalists are still employed โ€œfrom a pre-Taliban high of 5069."

 

72 percent of journalists who lost their jobs are women, according to the IFJ. โ€œ243 women are still employed by the media.โ€

 

โ€œFrom threats to draconian reporting restrictions and from economic collapse to the withdrawal of development funding the picture is catastrophic, not just for journalists who have lost their jobs or been forced to flee but also for citizens who are being denied access to information,โ€ IFJ General Secretary Anthony Bellanger said.

 

The Afghan media community called on the Islamic Emirate to help the media gain access to information.

 

โ€œIf the immediate steps are taken towards the situation of the media in the country, only some certain number of media organizations will be active in Afghanistan in the near future,โ€ said Hujatullah Mujadidi, head of the Head of the Afghan Independent Journalists Association.

 

โ€œWe call on the international community to invest in media to protect the process of access to information in the current Afghan situation,โ€ said Hafizullah Barakzai, head of the Afghanistan Journalists Council.

This comes as the Islamic Emirate announced earlier that the Media Violation Commission and a Joint Commission of media and the government would be established soon.

Pence's former chief of staff: Trump's claims of overturning election 'merited response'

 

Former Vice President Mike Pence this week gave a more direct rebuke of former President Trump's election claims because Trump's assertion that Pence could have overturned the results "merited response," Pence's former chief of staff said Sunday.

 

Marc Short said on NBC's "Meet the Press" that Pence had been "crystal clear from day one" that he lacked the authority to reject the election results on Jan. 6, 2021. While Pence has said as much over the past year, it wasn't until Friday that he explicitly said Trump was "wrong" to suggest otherwise.

 

"He extended those remarks a little bit his week โ€ฆ primarily because the president's comments about the vice president had the ability to overturn the election I think merited response," Short said. "Of course there's nothing in the 12th Amendment or the Electoral Count Act that would afford a vice president that authority. It's why no vice president in 200 years has ever used that authority."

 

Short insisted there were legitimate concerns about the way the election was conducted in states like Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and Georgia, all of which President Biden won in 2020. But the former Trump administration official conceded the time for legal challenges had passed by Jan. 6, 2021, and Biden is the "duly elected" president.

 

Pence on Friday delivered his clearest rebuke to date of Trump's election rhetoric after the former president had suggested Pence could have overturned the 2020 election results, and later mused that a special House panel investigating the Jan. 6 riots should look into why Pence did not reject the votes that certified Biden as the winner.

 

"There are those in our party who believe that as the presiding officer over the joint session of Congress, I possessed unilateral authority to reject Electoral College votes. And I heard this week that President Trump said I had the right to โ€˜overturn the election,' " Pence said at a Federalist Society event in Florida.

 

"President Trump is wrong. I had no right to overturn the election," Pence continued. "The presidency belongs to the American people and the American people alone."

 

Trump has periodically attacked Pence for overseeing Congress's official count of the Electoral College votes on Jan. 6, 2021, that was interrupted when a mob of Trump supporters violently stormed the Capitol in a bid to stop the process. Some of those rioters chanted "hang Mike Pence."

 

Short on Sunday said Trump "had many bad advisers who were basically snake oil salesman giving him really random and novel ideas as to what the vice president could do."

A hypothetical for you: your boss gives you money to invest in a new type of software for your company, and instead of purchasing the software, you use that money to pay your rent.

 

That is theft by conversion.

 

Broadly speaking, theft by conversion is when a person receives permission to use personal property or funds and then takes control of this property in a way that violates the initial agreement. This definition offers a unique twist to typical theft or larceny charges, as the defendant didnโ€™t take the property or asset illegally. Typically, this means there was some sort of lease or usage contract agreed upon by the owner and defendant.

 

According to a First District Court of Appeal case, three factors must be present for conversion to occur. โ€œFirst, the party in possession must be informed that continued possession of the property is no longer permitted; second, the rightful owner must demand the return of the property; and third, the party holding the property must fail to comply with the demand.โ€

 

In a conversion claim, the plaintiff must establish five points, by a preponderance of the evidence:

 

The specific piece of property, asset, or money

An initial possessory right to said property, asset, or money

The unauthorized act which deprives the initial owner of that property, asset, or money

A clear demand for the return of the property, asset, or money

A refusal to return the property, asset, or money

 

What Are the Penalties of Theft by Conversion?

 

Theft by conversion can be tried in either criminal or civil court, or both; therefore, the legal ramifications for conversion cases range wildly based on the monetary value of the asset in question and state law. There are serious consequences to conversion cases in Florida, even when these cases are classified as petit theft; however, felonious intent must be established. Florida Statute 772.11 states that the plaintiff can be awarded up to threefold the actual damages sustained in addition to reasonable court costs and attorneyโ€™s fees.

GOP congressman says NBC refuses to air ad naming US sponsors of Beijingโ€™s โ€˜Genocide Gamesโ€™

 

A Florida congressman blasted NBC on Saturday after the network declined to run an ad naming several major U.S. companies sponsoring the 2022 Beijing Olympics that the representative has labeled the โ€œGenocide Games.โ€

 

โ€œThe worldโ€™s greatest athletic showcase, but just outside the show: rape, genocide, slave labor,โ€ Rep. Mike Waltz (R-FL) said in the 30-second ad. โ€œAmerican companies are drunk on Chinese dollars, entangled with communist dictators committing atrocities and propping up these genocide games staged by the Chinese Communist Party.โ€

 

Enes Kanter Freedom, outspoken human rights advocate and Boston Celtics center, was also featured in the advertisement critical of the Chinese Communist regime.

 

โ€œStand for freedom, defund the dictators,โ€ Kanter said. โ€œWhen you see โ€˜Made in Chinaโ€ฆโ€™โ€

 

โ€œโ€ฆPut it down,โ€ Waltz said.

 

Waltz posted the advertisement on social media and explained that NBC would not run the ad in itโ€™s current form.

 

โ€œNBC refused to air my Olympics ad with @EnesFreedom unless we censor U.S. corporate logos of the Genocide Games sponsors,โ€ Waltz tweeted on Saturday. โ€œWe wonโ€™t let them silence us.

 

The ad includes the logo for several top sponsors listed by the International Olympics Committee including Visa, Procter & Gamble, Coca-Cola, Airbnb and Intel. Nike who is providing apparel for Team USA is also cited in the ad.

 

Waltz noted the grave nature of the crimes committed by communist China, drawing a comparison to two tragic genocides of the 20th century.

 

โ€œThis is the equivalent of holding the Olympics in Germany in the 1940s or Rwanda during their atrocities,โ€ Waltz told the New York Post. โ€œIt is beyond the pale that the [International Olympic Committee] didnโ€™t move the games.โ€

 

โ€œI think the companies supporting it should be absolutely ashamed,โ€ the Florida lawmaker said. โ€œMany of them preach social justice and contribute millions of dollars to social justice causes and yet are turning a blind eye to the genocide going on. Many of them are complicit with their own supply chains.โ€

 

A spokesman for Waltz noted that the ad would have to be changed to remove the logos of the companies before the network would accept it.

 

โ€œNBC will not run our ad unless we remove the corporate logos of companies,โ€ James Hewitt, a spokesman for Waltz said, also noting that the ad will not be altered.

 

A network spokesman clarified that the ad was not rejected outright, but that they required changes in accordance with their advertising guidelines before they would run it.

 

โ€œThe ad was not rejected. Per NBCUniversalโ€™s long-standing advertising guidelines, changes to the ad were requested so it could air,โ€ a network spokesman said.

 

โ€œIt defeats a major purpose of the ad: to highlight US sponsorsโ€™ culpability with Chinaโ€™s human rights abuses,โ€ Hewitt explained. โ€œThe point of the ad was to target Olympic audiences in DC.โ€

 

Some people werenโ€™t swayed by the ad that slammed the atrocities taking place in China because it was too inconvenient to protest so many American companies at once and other claimed it could have posed harm to the U.S. athletes currently in China.
