Democratic-led House passes China competition bill with funding for chipmakers

GOP leaders argue the measure comes too late to slow inflation, for which they say Democrat President Biden is responsible

The House passed a China competition bill on Friday intended to improve the country's ability to produce semiconductors and make the nation less reliant on China.

The measure aims, more specifically, to shore up strained supply chains and bolster international alliances.

The bill comes amid a global shortage of computer chips that has resulted in skyrocketing prices for automobiles, electronics and other goods that use them.

However, Republicans have said the measure is "toothless" and fails to hold the country, run by the Chinese Communist Party, accountable for economic and human rights violations, the Associated Press reports.

Republicans also argue the measure comes too late to slow record inflation under Democrat President Biden's term and does little to challenge China's economic position. GOP leaders have said the bill wastes taxpayer dollars on environmental initiatives and other unnecessary programs, such as $8 billion for a fund that helps developing countries adjust to climate change.

The nearly 3,000-page bill includes massive investments designed to boost semiconductor manufacturing in the U.S., including roughly $52 billion in grants and subsidies to help the semiconductor industry and $45 billion to strengthen supply chains for high-tech products, according to an official summary of the bill.

A budget watchdog group, the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, said the cost of the full bill is unknown.

The 50-50 Senate passed their own version of the bill over 7 months ago.

Turkish ethnic cleansing strategy in Syria uses Israeli-Arab NGO

BEHIND THE LINES: What is a charity based in Israel, apparently devoted to the Palestinian cause, doing building mosques in northern Syria? Turkish ethnic cleansing.

On June 21, 2021, a newly built mosque was inaugurated in the village of Sheikh Khurez, in northwest Syria, close to the Turkish border.

Sheikh Khurez is located in the part of Syria under the nominal administration of the opposition-linked Syrian Interim Government. In practice, since the Turkish Armed Forces’ Operation Olive Branch of 2018 destroyed the Kurdish Afrin canton, the area has been under the de facto rule of Ankara and its associated militias. The latter are organized in the framework of the Turkish-trained and financed Syrian National Army.

The opening of a small mosque in a remote corner of northwest Syria six months ago might generally be seen as an unremarkable event. The new house of prayer in Sheikh Khurez, however, was noteworthy because of a particular detail – namely, the identity of the organization that sponsored the mosque’s construction, and whose logo is displayed at its entrance.

The organization in question is called the Jamia’at al aish bi’Karama, or Living with Dignity Association. This body is based not in Syria, but in the city of Tira, in central Israel. It achieved some prominence last year because of the support it afforded to Arab residents of Jerusalem protesting planned expulsions in Sheikh Jarrah. It is linked to other organizations supporting a Sunni Islamist outlook, of the type represented by the Muslim Brotherhood and the government of Turkey.

So what is a Tira charity, apparently devoted to the Palestinian cause, doing building mosques in northern Syria?

TO UNDERSTAND, it is necessary first to recall the events of early 2018. At that time, Syrian Sunni Islamist militias supported by Turkey entered the Afrin area. Around 300,000 people, mainly Kurds, became refugees following the destruction of the Afrin canton. Most of these individuals then made their way to Kurdish-controlled northeast Syria. Many of them remain in refugee camps within this area.

Since that time, Turkey has been engaged in the large-scale resettlement in Afrin of Syrian Sunni Arab refugees formerly resident in Turkey. Turkey claims that 330,000 Syrians have been relocated to the Afrin areas and other parts of northern Syria conquered by Turkey in earlier operations, since 2018.

Most of these families hail from majority Sunni Arab areas of Syria that came under rebel control during the civil war and were then reconquered by the Assad regime, such as the Damascus countryside, Homs and Hama governorates, and southern Idlib.

A considerable number of Palestinian families caught up by the war have also been resettled in Afrin. According to a January 28 report at the Rohani website (a news outlet associated with the Kurdish authority in northeast Syria), 1,535 Palestinian families have been resettled in the Afrin area. These families hail from the Yarmouk refugee camp, Khan al-Sheikh and other areas south of Damascus.

Living with Dignity’s Facebook page indicates that the organization does not appear to prioritize the interests of these Palestinian displaced persons who have been resettled in Afrin.

Rather, the organization is a participant in the Turkish-led effort to insert a new, Sunni Arab population along the border between Syria and Turkey. The mosque at Sheikh Khurez is a small detail in a larger strategy of transformation, supported by Ankara, and carried out under the auspices of the Islamist Syrian National Army. The intention is to permanently transform the demographic and cultural identity of traditionally secular and multiethnic Afrin.

The academic’s name is Rachel Hardeman, a health and racial equity teacher at the University of Minnesota who studied under Communists at Cuba’s government-run Escuela Latinoamericana de Medicina in Havana.

Hardeman’s recently completed government-funded project links premature births to over-policing. Specifically, her team found that police contact has negative psychological effects on “pregnant people,” and psychological stress has been linked to preterm birth. “Existing knowledge of racial disparities in policing patterns and their associations with health suggest redesigning public safety policies could contribute to racial health equity,” according to the paper published in a medical journal. A University of Minnesota story promoting the study claims Hardeman “found that U.S.-born Black birthing people living in areas with high police contact experienced a 100% higher chance of preterm birth compared to residents in low-contact areas.” In the article the professor reveals that the research focused on residents of Minneapolis and found that “U.S.-born Black birthing people and their babies were hit the hardest by over-policing, which is a form of structural racism.”

Now Uncle Sam has tasked Hardeman with investigating the association between “racialized police violence,” which also falls under the category of “pervasive form of structural racism,” and the occurrence of preterm birth and low birth weight among black infants. It will cost American taxpayers $1.8 million and the University of Minnesota is promoting it as a “first-of-its-kind study.” The money will flow through the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the nation’s medical research agency with a stated mission of making important discoveries that improve health and save lives. In an “urgent” notice announcing one of the allocations for the multi-year project, the NIH adds COVID-19 to the mix and refers to the pandemic and racism as “two public health emergencies.” The allocation is for $346,456. “This time sensitive request has significant potential to further revolutionize our understanding of the impact of racism on Black maternal health by exploring how the dual pandemics of COVID-19 and structural racism laid bare by George Floyd’s death while in police custody have impacted Black maternal health,” the grant document states.

Three Turkish-Backed Militants, Including Commander, Killed In Northern Aleppo Attack

Late on February 3, three militants of the Turkish-backed Northern Brigade were killed when a mysterious explosion rocked their vehicle as it was passing near the town of Jarabulus in the northern countryside of Aleppo.

The three militants were identified as Mohammed Mustafa, Abdul Karim Alloush and Abdul Basit Nassif. According to Syrian opposition activists, Mustafa was the head of the Northern Brigade’s operation room.

While most sources contributed the explosion in the militants’ vehicle to a heavy improvised explosive device, some speculated that the vehicle was targeted with an anti-tank guided missile fired by the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).

Turkish forces and the SDF have been exchanging blows in northern and northeastern Syria for the last few days. More than a dozen on both sides were killed.

On February 4, the Turkish military and its proxies shelled the SDF-held towns of Mara’naz, Shawargha and al-Irshadiyah in the northern countryside of Aleppo. Casualties and material losses were reported.

The situation in northern and northeastern Syria could deteriorate even further in the upcoming few weeks, especially that Turkey appears to be planning to escalate.

WASHINGTON — The Republican National Committee voted Friday to formally censure two of their own party's members — Reps. Liz Cheney, of Wyoming, and Adam Kinzinger, of Illinois, — because of their work investigating the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol.

The adoption of the resolution occurred Friday by voice vote in Salt Lake City at the RNC's annual meeting when the resolution came before the committee's 168 members during their general session.

An RNC panel had advanced the measure on Thursday, which said that the committee will "immediately cease any and all support of them as members of the Republican Party for their behavior, which has been destructive to the institution of the U.S. House of Representatives, the Republican Party and our republic, and is inconsistent with the position of the conference."

It continued by ripping the two members of Congress for their criticism of former President Donald Trump.

"The Conference must not be sabotaged by Representatives Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger, who have demonstrated, with actions and words, that they support Democrat efforts to destroy President Trump more than they support winning back a Republican majority in 2022," the resolution said.

In advance of the vote, Cheney said Thursday that the leaders of the GOP have made themselves "willing hostages to a man who admits he tried to overturn a presidential election and suggests he would pardon Jan. 6 defendants, some of whom have been charged with seditious conspiracy."

Several lawmakers have denounced the move by the RNC including Sen. Mitt Romney, R-Utah, the 2012 GOP presidential nominee.

"Shame falls on a party that would censure persons of conscience, who seek truth in the face of vitriol," he tweeted Friday. "Honor attaches to Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger for seeking truth even when doing so comes at great personal cost."

Sen. Bill Cassidy, R-La., also tweeted late Thursday, "The RNC is censuring Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger because they are trying to find out what happened on January 6th — HUH?"

Senators on precipice of Russia sanctions deal

Senators say they are on the brink of clinching a deal on Russia sanctions legislation, as they work to reach a final agreement on text of a bill.

The progress comes after the talks appeared to hit a snag earlier this week, as the group struggled to resolve two of their biggest sticking points: If some sanctions should be implemented immediately and how to handle the Nord Stream 2 pipeline that will carry gas from Russia to Germany.

Sen. Jim Risch (Idaho), the top Republican on the Foreign Relations Committee, stopped short of saying that the group has a "deal in principle," but that they were "optimistic" that they would be ready to make an announcement on an agreement "pretty soon."

"It will be soon. When you get to where you need to be on this there's a lot of drafting that needs to take place, and then negotiations over where the commas go and that sort of thing. So, we're in the process of that and we're going to have something for you very, very soon," Risch said, when asked if a deal could be announced on Thursday or Friday.

The news from the Senate comes amid a Russian military buildup on its border with Ukraine. The Russian government has amassed over 100,000 troops at the border with the former Soviet country, prompting concern from the U.S., Canada and allies that the country will invade.

Russia, for its part, has denied it has plans to invade Ukraine.

Risch and Sen. Bob Menendez (N.J.), the top Democrat on the Foreign Relations Committee, appeared together on a CNN "State of the Union" interview on Sunday, with Menendez describing their talks as on the "one-yard line."

But the group faced stumbling blocks when they returned to Washington that scuttled hopes among some senators for a deal earlier this week.

Menendez, on Thursday, said that he was "cautiously optimistic" that they would be able to reach an agreement. He added during an MSNBC interview on the same afternoon that they were "very close" to a final agreement.

"We've been working diligently around the clock to get a bipartisan package," Menendez said.

Senators are eyeing an agreement that would include some financial penalties that would be slapped on Russia as soon as the bill becomes law, including sanctions in response to Russian cyberattacks and efforts to undermine the Ukrainian government. Senators have been discussing giving President Biden some authority to waive the sanctions, though that's been a point of contention among the group.

"We are looking at is sanctions for actions that have already been taken by the Russians," Menendez said.

The negotiating group has been in touch with the administration and Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) and Senate GOP Leader Mitch McConnell (Ky.) as they tried to reach a deal.

DGA Poll: Trump’s Endorsement Could Sway GOP Voters Toward Cox

Maryland Republicans are more likely to support gubernatorial hopeful Dan Cox if they know that he has been endorsed by former president Donald Trump, according to a new survey.

Most GOP voters aren’t aware that Cox, a state delegate who represents parts of Frederick and Carroll counties, has the former president’s support, the poll found. Taken together, the results suggest Trump’s endorsement could be beneficial for Cox as he battles former state Commerce Secretary Kelly M. Schulz and a third candidate in the Republican primary, analysts said.

The poll surveyed 565 GOP voters who said they intend to vote in the June 28 primary. It was conducted by Public Policy Polling on Jan. 28 and 29 and was commissioned by the Democratic Governors Association.

When pollsters first queried GOP voters about the race, 20% said they support Cox and 12% said they back Schulz. Just under 70% were undecided. The poll did not include anti-tax advocate Robin Ficker, a frequent candidate, in its survey, even though Ficker has been actively campaigning for two years.

When pollsters informed voters that Trump has endorsed Cox and that Gov. Lawrence J. Hogan Jr. (R) has endorsed Schulz, Cox’s lead grows to 52%-18%. The number of undecideds plummets from 69% to 30%.

The poll, which was conducted over the phone and by text message, has a 4.1-point margin of error.

Analysts said the results are yet another sign that the disgraced former president retains broad support among rank-and-file Republicans.

“It’s clear that Donald Trump continues to drive the narrative within the Republican Party,” said Stephen Farnsworth, a presidential historian and author at the University of Mary Washington. “This demonstrates that a large number of Republican primary voters continue to listen to Donald Trump.”

In an interview, Cox said the survey “confirms what we’re seeing on the campaign trail.”

“The Maryland Republican Party firmly believes in the America First value of our Republican platform and I’m honored to be carrying that banner,” he added. “But we’re running with the recognition that we are the underdogs.”

Recently released campaign finance reports showed that Schulz has a towering financial advantage over Cox, thanks in large part to donations from groups and individuals with ties to the Hogan wing of the party. She has raised nearly $1.5 million and had $1.05 million remaining as of Jan. 12; Ficker had more than $900,000 (mostly his own money) in his account, while Cox had just $270,000 cash-on-hand, having raised approximately $390,000.

The Schulz campaign would not make anyone available for an interview about the poll. In a statement, spokesman Mike Demkiw declined to address the poll’s findings or methodology, except to characterize it as a “push poll” — though the pollsters asked no questions that distorted facts or spun hypothetical scenarios.

Cox drew criticism for his actions on Jan. 6, 2021, when he provided transportation for constituents to attend the Trump rally that preceded the attempted insurrection at the U.S. Capitol. At the height of the melee, Cox took to social media to call then-Vice President Mike Pence “a traitor.”

The poll found that Maryland Republicans share baseless beliefs about the 2020 election. Just 27% said they believe “that Joe Biden was legitimately elected President in 2020” while 61% do not.

Asked to choose between two statements — “COVID-19 was overblown by liberals to restrict our rights and undermine Donald Trump,” or “COVID-19 is a deadly virus that the U.S. was slow to respond to and thousands died as a result” — 61% said COVID was overblown and 24% called it a deadly virus.

Perhaps more troublingly for Schulz, who has sought to steer clear of the former president without explicitly criticizing him, 61% of Maryland GOP voters said they would “prefer for the Republican nominee for Governor in the general election to embrace Donald Trump’s agenda” while just 27% said they would rather have someone who “appeal(s) to Maryland’s diverse electorate.”

WA police crash Catholic Church mid-way through mass to check on compliance with mask mandate

Parishioners at a Catholic church in Western Australia had their evening mass interrupted by police who stormed in to check churchgoers were wearing their masks.

Parishioners have been left “stunned” after a West Australian police officer stormed into a Catholic church halfway through a mass to check masks.

Masks were made mandatory for all indoor settings in the Perth and Peel regions on January 16 to combat rising COVID-19 cases.

The evening mass at St Bernadette’s Catholic Church in Mount Hawthorn, Perth was forced to stop when a police officer walked in to ensure all parishioners were abiding by the mask mandate.

Parishioner Matthew told 6PR radio it was “pretty confronting” to see police storm in to stop the service mid-way through.

“It’s pretty troubling really to see the liturgy that you love being stopped by police,” he said.

“I mean I’ve never seen anything like this and I don’t think many people have, certainly not in this country.”

According to Matthew, the police officer entered the church before walking to the front of the church to halt the mass before telling the clergy they had received reports of people not wearing masks.

“(They) proceeded to check three or four parishioners’ exemptions and then left, everything was in order,” he said.

Matthew said the churchgoers were “stunned” by the interruption.

“It’s just pretty confronting seeing police vests and stuff in church,” he said.

“He didn’t remove his hat, which is pretty disrespectful in that environment.”

West Australian Police confirmed they had attended the church after receiving reports people were not wearing masks.

“Upon attendance, five people were spoken to by police and complied in wearing a mask. One person provided proof of an exemption,” a police spokesperson said.

Following the incident Father Doug from St Bernadette’s Catholic Church reminded those attending mass that masks are mandatory.

“You are not permitted to enter the Church unless you are wearing a mask,” he wrote in a social media post.

“If you have an exemption letter from your doctor, then please make certain that you carry this on you at all times.

“Heavy fines on the parish priest, our parish and individuals will be incurred if you are caught without wearing your mask. Please co-operate with this request so as to avoid any complications.”

A former staff member at the Australian embassy in Bangkok has been charged by Thai police after spy cameras were discovered in women's bathrooms inside the secure government building.

The discovery last month raises serious questions about how the cameras were able to be installed and remain undiscovered, potentially for years.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) confirmed that a former locally engaged staff member at the Australian embassy in Bangkok was arrested by Royal Thai Police on January 6.

The ABC understands the former employee, Bank Thamsongsana, has dual Australian and Thai citizenship and was until recently employed as an IT systems manager at the embassy.

His recently deleted LinkedIn profile stated he had been employed by DFAT since 2013, after living and studying in Australia and holding several other Australian government positions.

It is understood multiple cameras were discovered directed at women's showers and toilets after an SD card containing images of female staff was found on a bathroom floor last year.

A government employee with knowledge of the incident told the ABC employees at the embassy were shocked and shaken.

"Female staff, Thai and Australian, are very anxious," the person said.

"Some of the women don't feel safe to stay there. They feel compromised and threatened."

The government employee added that embassy staff wanted more support to "manage the serious psychological impacts of this matter, or even the possibility of serious security breaches".

It is not known how long the cameras had been in place or how much vision had been collected but it is understood dozens of Australian embassy staff are assisting the Thai police.

Felix Sater claims the Kazakhstan players were seeking to interfere in the 2016 election to benefit Hillary Clinton.

On Feb. 3, long-time Trump associate Felix Sater filed a cross-complaint in a New York federal court. The complaint alleges that Russian and Kazakhstan-connected individuals and entities conducted “a shadow intelligence operation of Sater and Trump for the purpose of manufacturing information to harm Donald Trump politically,” including by providing Christopher Steele a PowerPoint presentation riddled with lies Steele later fed to the FBI.

Sater’s cross suit comes nearly three years after the City of Almaty, Kazakhstan, and BTA Bank filed suit against Sater, two of the companies he owned, a former business associate, and that associate’s LLCs, in City of Almaty, Kazakhstan v. Sater.

In that lawsuit, filed in May 2019, Almaty and BTA Bank alleged that Sater and the other defendants helped Mukhtar Ablyazov, the former chairman of the BTA Bank, and Viktor Khrapunov, the former mayor of the City of Almaty, launder money the duo had stolen from the plaintiffs. In the case, the plaintiffs sought recovery of millions of dollars in stolen funds, based on claims of fraud, conspiracy, unjust enrichment, and conversion.

While that case has been pending in a federal district court in New York since spring 2019, on Thursday Sater filed for the first time counterclaims against Almaty and BTA Bank. In yesterday’s filing, Sater also added the Republic of Kazakhstan and Arcanum (Asia) Ltd. as parties.

In his lawsuit, Sater claimed that in June 2015, BTA Bank, Almaty, and Kazakhstan, referred to as the Kazakh Parties throughout the court filing, entered a “confidential assistance agreement” or “CAA,” in which they agreed to pay Sater (through his company, Litco) $100,000 per month, plus a percentage of the funds recovered, for Sater’s help in recovering assets stolen by Ablyazov.

In an email kept from public view for more than five years, a top U.S. State Department official in Kiev wrote to Washington superiors at the end of the Obama-Biden administration that Hunter Biden's business dealings in Ukraine "undercut" U.S. efforts to fight corruption in the former Soviet republic.

The email, obtained by Just the News, was written on Nov. 22, 2016 by former U.S. embassy official George Kent, one of the Democrats' star witnesses in their first effort to impeach former President Donald Trump.

It was classified "confidential," the lowest level of secrecy, by then-U.S. Ambassador to Kiev Marie Yovanovitch, another of the Democrats' impeachment witnesses, and was not produced as evidence to House lawmakers during impeachment. Contrary to federal law, the State Department failed to acknowledge the existence of the document to the court or to Just the News in its multiple Freedom of Information Act lawsuits against the State Department seeking records on Hunter and Joe Biden's dealings in Ukraine.

Most importantly, the email's stark message directly conflicts with the narrative the mainstream media, State Department witnesses and Democratic congressmen gave the public two years ago, when they insisted Hunter Biden's lucrative job with the allegedly corrupt Ukrainian gas company Burisma Holdings — while creating the appearance of a conflict of interest — had no impact on U.S. efforts to fight corruption in that country.

"The real issue to my mind was that someone in Washington needed to engage VP Biden quietly and say that his son Hunter's presence on the Burisma board undercut the anti-corruption message the VP and we were advancing in Ukraine," Kent wrote multiple high-ranking officials in the State Department in Washington.

The recipients of the email included Jorgan K. Andrews, then the-Deputy Assistant Secretary of State in the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs.

Kent's email described an intense pressure campaign by advocates for Burisma — including a former U.S. ambassador — to rehabilitate the Ukrainian company's corrupt reputation and to get Ukraine prosecutors to drop their criminal investigations of the company.

Kent even relayed to higher-ups that he had confirmed with Ukrainian prosecutors that Burisma officials had paid a $7 million "bribe" to make one of the cases against the company disappear. The bribe was allegedly paid at a time when Hunter Biden was serving on the Burisma board, a job that landed his firm more than $3 million from the Ukrainian energy company.

Kent explained to the officials in Washington that Burisma's long reputation for alleged corruption and anecdotes like the bribe were one of the main reasons Hunter Biden's affiliation with the company proved harmful to U.S. efforts to fight Ukrainian corruption.

"Ukrainians heard one message from us," Kent wrote, "and then saw another set of behavior, with the [BIden] family association with a known corrupt figure whose company was known for not playing by the rules in the oil/gas sector."

The email chain also showed that State officials were acutely aware that Hunter Biden had an affiliation with an American business partner also accused — and eventually convicted of — corruption.

"I should note that there were two American members of the Burisma board: Hunter Biden and Devon Archer," another State official on the email chain wrote Kent and Andrews. "Archer was recently indicted in a federal fraud case."

Ohio GOP Rep. Jim Jordan, the ranking member on the House Government Oversight and Reform Committee, played a key role in defending President Trump in the 2019-20 Ukraine impeachment scandal. He told Just the News Tuesday night that lawmakers and Trump's defense team were not given the Kent email as best he could tell.

"This is frightening," Jordan told the new Just the News television show on Real America's Voice network. "And the fact that we didn't have this information during the impeachment, I think is maybe the biggest concern. I mean, the President of the United States is defending himself from a ridiculous impeachment process that the Democrats bring on him, where he wasn't allowed to be in the depositions, wasn't allowed to have his counsel there.

"And now we find out wasn't allowed to have information that he's entitled to have to put on his defense. I mean, frankly, we Republicans who were in the rooms in that bunker in the basement of the Capitol, we'd have liked to have this information that you just described, and other information that wasn't available to us as well, that you've written about."

State Department officials did not immediately respond to requests for comment Tuesday about the memo.

Alan Dershowitz, the famed Harvard law professor who was a member of Trump's impeachment defense team, said the withholding of Kent's email and other evidence Just the News reported earlier this week was a "very serious constitutional violation" of what is known as the Brady rule requiring all potentially exculpatory evidence be turned over to defendants.

"The United States Supreme Court in the Brady decision ruled that when a defendant is on trial, the prosecutors cannot withhold evidence that could be exculpatory, or in any way helpful to the defendant," Dershowitz said.

"And obviously, that has to apply to impeachment proceedings even more so," he added. "Because in impeachment proceedings, the American public has the right to know all the evidence. And if the people who impeached President Trump — obviously I was one of the lawyers on the other side — were aware of exculpatory evidence or evidence that would in some way mitigate the charges, they had an obligation to turn it over to us so that we could use this information in defending our client."

Officials who served in the State Department back in 2019-20 said they do not believe the email was produced to the impeachment investigation and was definitely not produced after the successful FOIA lawsuits filed by Just the News and the Southeastern Legal Foundation seeking all records related to Hunter Biden and Burisma.

They said the email — though once classified at the confidential level — was circulated in non-classified settings towards the end of the Trump administration and was produced to Senate investigators in late 2020 to be read in a secure reading room.

Kimberly Hermann, the general counsel for the Southeastern Legal Foundation, said the Kent email was clearly responsive to the FOIA requests and should either have been produced to Just the News during the litigation or identified on a privilege log as a document being withheld by the government. She vowed to seek penalties against the government.

Mr Joyce said the border closures had heavily impacted the tourism sector and he “didn’t get the logic”.

“It is very confusing here for a lot of people, and it is very hard for a lot of people,” he said.

“We should be getting on and living with Covid like we are in the eastern states today … the fact that we can travel to London but we can’t travel to Perth, I think there’s something fundamentally wrong with the federation if that’s happening.”

Before the pandemic, one of Qantas’ most popular international flights was a direct Perth-London trip and Perth Airport yesterday announced it would be shuttering parts of the complex to reduce operational costs.

"The State Department should have produced these documents years ago when SLF and JTN first requested them," Hermann said. "Instead, they denied their existence, hid them, and arguably did so in bad faith. These bad actors must now be held accountable for what the documents show, for hiding them, and for misleading the American public."

Jordan said his congressional investigators will be reviewing testimony from the impeachment trial and a separate Senate investigation into the Biden family led by Sen. Ron Johnson in 2020 to see if any of the new evidence conflicts with sworn testimony given to Congress.

"Well, it's something we're going to have to look at," Jordan said. "We've got to go back and review their transcripts."

Just the News reviewed testimony given by more than two dozen people during the impeachment proceedings and Johnson's Senate probe and found no mention of the Kent email but found numerous statements that Hunter Biden's role with Burisma had no effect on U.S.-Ukraine policy.

Kent in both proceedings testified that Hunter Biden's affiliation with Burisma created the appearance of a conflict of interest for Joe Biden and that one time he tried to raise the issue with Biden's vice presidential office and was rebuffed. He also sharply criticized this reporter's articles for The Hill that raised questions about the Bidens' business dealings in Ukraine.

"I was on a call with somebody on the Vice President's staff and I cannot recaIl who it was, just briefing on what was happening in Ukraine," Kent told impeachment investigators in 2019. "I raised my concerns that I had heard that Hunter Biden was on the board of a company owned by somebody that the U.S. Government had spent money trying to get tens of millions of dollars back and that could create the perception of a conflict of interest.

"The message that I recall hearing back was that the Vice President's son Beau was dying of cancer and that there was no further bandwidth to deal with family related issues at the time."

Kent gave a similar answer to Johnson's Senate investigators a year later.

"Burisma's owner was a poster child for corrupt behavior, and Hunter Biden's position on the board could create the perception of a conflict of interest at the time when Vice President Biden was leading the policy charge, pushing President Poroshenko and Prime Minister Yatsenyuk to take more decisive anti-corruption action," he testified.

"You know, for a fact, that Hunter Biden's role on the board had zero impact on the decisions of the Embassy," Kent was asked.

Former legal services commissioner adds voice to Queensland government integrity concerns

The Palaszczuk government has defended itself against integrity concerns, amid calls for a formal inquiry.

Former Queensland acting Legal Services Commissioner Robert Brittan on Friday joined ex-Integrity Commissioner Nikola Stepanov and ex-archivist Mike Summerell in voicing concerns over government interference when performing their roles.

The former commissioner resigned in 2019 over reservations about how his role would be filled, and the selection committee involved.

Attorney-General Shannon Fentiman said it was a "non-story", defending the government's selection process.

"It was not a story in 2019 and it's not a story today," she said.

"Let me be very, very clear. Mr Brittan was the acting legal services commission and he had some concerns about a selection panel for the role of legal services commissioner which had the bar association and the law society representatives.

"The Attorney-General at the time didn't necessarily agree with him on that but he still took those concerns seriously."

Ms Fentiman added advice was sought by the Integrity Commissioner, who approved the selection process.

"She had that formal advice," she said.

Ms Fentiman added all claims made against the government had been duly investigated.

But opposition leader David Crisafulli said government officials were dodging accusations and refusing accountability, calling for a Royal Commission into state government conduct.

"Anything short of that is a cop-out," he said.

"The end of tenure of three of the most important roles to keep a government accountable, and on the way out the door there have been some damning allegations and some calls for action that have been unheeded.

"Over the last week we have seen a dark chapter of Queensland's integrity history."
