Abray: As protesters take over downtown Ottawa, police wave the white flag

Here we are, violently occupied by one group of people, self-described as 'protesters,' while being led by another group who can only be described as incompetent.

This past Monday afternoon, with the sun shining, the birds singing, and the air crisp and fresh, I walked into a popular downtown park and was assaulted by three men. They didn’t want my wallet. They didn’t want any of my belongings. What they wanted was my city. And now, five days later, it looks like they have succeeded in stealing it.

One week ago today, trucks and cars and minivans began rolling into Ottawa and set up camp in the heart of our city. Our city officials had been warned that this demonstration was not going to be like other demonstrations. They were warned that, beneath the cries of freedom and personal choice, there was a black heart of violence and hate. Instead of heeding those warnings, our police service rolled out the red carpet and welcomed the demonstrators into our neighbourhoods, giving them free rein. They’ll get tired of this, they said. They’ll protest, pack up and go home they said.

Now, our city is an occupation zone. Calling it anything else is wishful thinking or naïveté. At a press conference on Wednesday, our police chief barked at city officials and residents alike, blaming them for his predicament. He threw up his hands and waved a metaphorical, pathetic white flag: “There may not be a policing solution available.” He surrendered without a fight, an exchange of harsh words or even a consistently enforced bylaw. He abandoned us while the mayor casually looked on, seemingly unable even to pay proper attention to the questions he was being asked by understandably perplexed reporters.

So, here we are, violently occupied by one group of people, self-described as “protesters,” while being led by another group who can only be described as incompetent.

To be clear: the protesters’ demands are unintelligible and anti-democratic. They want to be in charge. That’s basically it. They don’t like democracy, they just like “FREEDOM!!!” Putting the contradictions aside, they want what they want and they are willing to threaten and terrorize until they get it. And most of our public officials seem more than ready to give it to them. Certainly our chief of police is.

In his news conference, Chief Peter Sloly told us the protesters are so dangerously violent that they cannot be safely policed. He alluded to rumours of weapons and intentions to violence. He waved an arrest, many miles away, as proof of his concerns. He is right to be concerned. Those rumours are disturbing. They are cause for alarm and caution. But they are not cause for inaction.

Despite the chief’s dire warnings, we are asked to continue living with the protesters as unwelcome neighbours. We are told to stay indoors, avoid public areas and deal with the constant deafening blare of horns and the constant terror of being unsafe on our own streets. They are dangerous, we are told. There may be weapons, we are told. Their vehicles alone are a great menace, we are told. And yet, while warning us of the dangers of multi-tonne vehicles as weapons, our police service continues to accommodate this encampment of weapons of mass destruction as they facilitate the transfer of large amounts of gas and diesel into the so-called Red Zone (I prefer to call it “down the street”).

Let me repeat that: the protesters are being supplied with fuel, all while threatening violence so dire it has our chief of police throwing in the towel and calling for a political solution. And still, the parade of jerry cans continues, delivering flammable liquid to the doorstep of our duly, democratically elected government. It boggles the mind. And as a resident, a friend, a parent and someone who believes in the importance of real democratic engagement, it enrages me. And it should enrage you, too.

Tomorrow, this problem will only deepen. More protesters will rejoin the crowd (hotels are fully booked). By all accounts, the police will continue to stand around, doing little, allowing public trust to erode even further. They will watch as our civil society is repeatedly assaulted, in broad daylight, while the sun shines, and the birds sing. Freedom? I don’t think so.

Canadian military cuts dozens of unvaccinated troops, puts hundreds more on notice

The Canadian Armed Forces has kicked out dozens of service members who refused to bare their arms and get vaccinated, while release proceedings have started for hundreds of others.

The steps come after chief of the defence staff Gen. Wayne Eyre ordered all military personnel be fully vaccinated by mid-October to protect the Armed Forces from COVID-19. The deadline was later extended to mid-December.

While most service members complied with the order, with the Defence Department reporting more than 98 per cent of Canadian troops had chosen to get vaccinated, hundreds of others did not. Those soldiers are now being forced to hang up their uniforms.

For no reason a quick (over a few months out of the blue) severe decline in mental acuity.. no history of signs of dementia. It’s literally a night and day difference. Firefighter injured while battling 3-alarm barn fire near St. Paul

ST. PAUL, Ore. — A firefighter was critically injured after there was an explosion while crews battled a 3-alarm barn fire in Saint Paul Thursday morning.

 

The fire sparked just after 4 a.m. near Champoeg Creek Lane Northeast and McKay Road Northeast.

 

There was an explosion inside the barn, which injured the firefighter from the St. Paul Fire District, according to the Marion County Sheriff's Office.

Officials said Lifeflight was activated and took the injured firefighter to an area hospital.

Officials have not said what caused the fire. However, Oregon State Police confirmed arson detectives are at the scene.

 

Crews from Aurora Fire District, Mt. Angel Fire District, Woodburn Fire District, Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue, Canby Fire District, Dayton Fire Department and Hubbard Fire District responded to assist St. Paul Fire District with the incident, Marion County deputies said.

"Pleasure based sexual relations" — along with same-sex relationships and gender identity — are part of a proposed sex ed program for Rhode Island, and dozens of folks testified and reached out to the media Wednesday in regard to a state bill that outlines the curriculum, WLNE-TV reported.

What are the details?

 

The state House Education Committee held a hearing Wednesday afternoon and heard from folks with opinions on the bill for grades 6 through 12, the station said.

 

When asked about the "pleasure based" language, WLNE said the bill's primary sponsor — Democratic state Rep. Rebecca Kislak, who's a member of the education committee — wouldn't define what “pleasure” means in the legislation.

 

“I think that one word in the legislation is not, should not be the focus here,” a very smiley Kislak told the station.

 

One parent disagreed.

 

“Any child under 18, we should not be talking about sexual pleasure. We shouldn’t be talking about some of these topics that they’re looking to roll into sexual education,” Kimberly Quagan told WLNE. “I think it should be basically from a clinical standpoint that’s one thing, and I actually think anything they want to teach regarding this matter, the curriculum should be approved by parents.”

The U.S. Army will begin discharging soldiers who refuse to be vaccinated against the coronavirus, unless the service member has an approved exemption or pending request.

They are also easily found on eBay, Etsy, Facebook Marketplace and other e-commerce sites. While there are online sellers in both Canada and the U.S., the vast majority of items appear to be manufactured and shipped by companies in China.

“In a democracy, we tolerate political expression from a variety of perspectives, but I wonder if consumers have considered how their purchase of these products supports a country where citizens do not have the same rights to political expression,” Shelley Boulianne told CTVNews.ca.

Boulianne is an associate professor at MacEwan University in Alberta who cowrote a 2020 study on political consumerism, which is “the deliberate purchase or avoidance of products, goods, or services for political reasons.” Boulianne calls the Trudeau merchandise part of “a long history of consumption of products… to express one's political views.”

“I think Canadians consuming these flags and related products should consider how the purchase of these products conflict with their own core democratic values related to freedom of expression,” Boulianne said.

At the Ottawa protests, others waved apparently off-the-shelf flags bearing Confederate, Nazi and far-right symbols. Some demonstrators claimed they were trying to draw comparisons between current public health measures and Nazi Germany.

“You either have that stuff because you’re a Nazi already, or you paid somebody who’s a Nazi to buy it,” Canadian Anti-Hate Network Executive Director Evan Balgord told CTVNews.ca. “There are some symbols that just so obviously mean one thing: that you are for the subjugation and destruction of another group of people.”

The Canadian Anti-Hate Network wants to ban such symbols from public spaces. While the Canadian Criminal Code prohibits speech that incites or promotes hatred against identifiable groups, there are no federal laws that specifically prohibit Nazi and similar symbols.

“Just having a Confederate flag is not illegal,” James Turk, the director of Ryerson University’s Centre for Free Expression, told CTVNews.ca. “It’s offensive, it shouldn’t be done, we have every right to express outrage with somebody who does it, but it’s not a violation of the law.”

Like Boulianne, Turk points out that offensive political products have a long history in democratic societies.

“Amazon certainly makes the manufacturing and distribution and selling of those products easier than ever before,” he said. “But the phenomenon isn’t new.”

In a statement to CTVNews.ca, an Amazon spokesperson said the company supports COVID-19 vaccination efforts and complies with local health and safety measures.

“The products you reference are sold in Amazon’s online store by third-party sellers,” they explained. “Amazon does not allow products that promote, incite or glorify hatred, violence, racial, sexual or religious intolerance or promote organizations with such views.”

According to a spokesperson from Facebook’s parent company Meta, “voicing opposition to government leaders or mandates is not against Meta’s policies.”

“What we don’t allow is the sale of violent or hateful products on our platforms, or the sharing of content that makes harmful claims about vaccines,” Meta added. “We’ll continue monitoring our platform and will enforce against any content that violates our policies.”

Etsy and eBay did not respond to requests for comment.

Turk from Ryerson University says that in these times of “extreme polarization,” it’s more important than ever to protect Canadians’ rights to freedom of expression—even perhaps if that right is crudely being exercised with “F*** TRUDEAU” flag.

“We can’t resolve these things by trying to silence the opposition,” Turk said of the ongoing protests rattling Ottawa. “It’s far better to criticize, protest, object to and so forth. But bad ideas and bad behaviour don’t go away because you censor them.”

Joshua 11:6 The LORD said to Joshua, "Do not be afraid of them, because by this time tomorrow I will hand all of them, slain, over to Israel. You are to hamstring their horses and burn their chariots."

And David took from him 1,700 horsemen, and 20,000 foot soldiers. And David hamstrung all the chariot horses but left enough for 100 chariots.

 

"You shall hamstring (cripple) their horses and burn their chariots with fire." On its face, this command doesn't seem to make any sense at all: why get rid of something that seems valuable like horses and chariots, especially when there was still more land to conquer and battles to fight? After all, horse-drawn chariots were the best military technology at the time, and they would certainly have come in handy as the Israelites continued to sweep through the land. Why, God? Why disable and destroy what seems like valuable tools of warfare? Regardless of these unanswered questions, Joshua does as he's told: "And Joshua did to them just as the Lord said to him: he hamstrung their horses and burned their chariots with fire." Although the command may have been confusing to Israel at the time, as we look back on this story, there are at least two clear reasons why God instructed the Israelites not to use horses and chariots.

  1. To remind Israel that God alone is sovereign over the battle.

If the Israelites had horses and chariots to fight their battles, it could be very easy for them to be tempted to think that their might and victory came from horses and chariots and not from God. And that is not something that God will allow to happen to them. In fact, it seems that God wants his people to engage in their battles from what appears to be a position of weakness so that it will be clear to them - and to their enemies - that the only reason they are successful is because

God is fighting for them. And so, in order to drive that point home, God tells them to cripple the horses so they will never pull another chariots, and burn the chariots so they will never again be used in battle. The message is this: God is sovereign over the battle, and victory comes from him. Not from horses; not from chariots; not from strategy; not from strength; not from superior weaponry; not from anything but from God.

  1. To show Israel that the best that man has to offer amounts to nothing.

The horse-drawn chariot was the height of military technology in Joshua's day. All of the best and strongest armies employed horses and chariots in their conquests, and the army with the most chariots had the best advantage on the battlefield. So then, in telling his people to get rid of all the horses and chariots, God is showing them that the best that mankind has to offer to help them in their endeavors amounts to nothing when compared to the sovereign power and action of God fighting on your behalf. Imagine walking onto a modern battlefield where guns, bombs, mortars, and every other type of deadly weapon is aimed right at you, and you've only been given a rubber band to shoot with your thumbs. The power of God is so immense that horses and chariots amount to the tactical advantage of of a rubber band in comparison.

Unlike Israel, you and I are not engaged in a campaign to claim the Promised Land, and we're not fighting armies and inheriting horses and chariots as the spoils of war. But, like Israel, you and I certainly have things in our lives that can tempt us to take our focus off of trusting in God and his provision and sovereignty in our lives. Imagine the security that having horses and chariots would have brought the Israelites. They probably would have slept better at night knowing they had horses and chariots; they probably would have felt more confident and bold and encouraged if they had horses and chariots. But the security of horses and chariots is nothing compared to the security of trusting the sovereign Lord of the universe. Israel didn't need horses and chariots. They needed God.

Psalm 33.17: The war horse is a false hope for salvation, and by its great might it cannot rescue. So is anything in which you put your trust, because the best the world or you can offer amounts to nothing when compared to God's abilities. Your status or wealth or power or good works are false hopes for salvation - by their great might they cannot rescue. Only God rescues.

New Brunswick Public Health is working with both of the province’s health networks to investigate a neurological syndrome of an unknown cause that has affected dozens of New Brunswickers.

 

So far, 48 people have shown symptoms of the mysterious brain disease, and six deaths are attributed to it.

 

“The discovery of a potentially new and unknown syndrome is scary,” said Health Minister Dorothy Shephard during a news conference Thursday.

 

“I know New Brunswickers are concerned and confused about this potential neurological syndrome. I share in that concern.”

 

Shephard said the province is creating a new joint oversight committee to review the 48 cases.

The new committee will be co-chaired by Dr. Édouard Hendriks, the vice-president of Horizon Health Network’s medical, academic and research affairs, and Dr. Natalie Banville, the vice-president of medical affairs for the Vitalité Health Network.

 

It will also include six neurologists and one member from Public Health.

 

“The mandate of the oversight committee is to provide expert second opinions on the identified cases, to ensure due diligence and to rule out other potential causes,” said Shephard.

 

She said that work will include, but is not limited to, reviewing case definitions, medical charts and recommendations for further lab testing, identifying individuals or their contacts who might need further testing, identifying gaps in medical records and where they can improve, identifying potential requirements for further lab testing, and scanning potentially applicable research.

 

No diagnosis

Doctors in New Brunswick began identifying some people with an “unusual combination of neurological symptoms” in early 2020.

 

“Despite extensive medical investigation, a diagnosis for the 48 individuals identified in this cluster has not yet been determined,” said Shephard. “These 48 individuals require additional investigation.”

 

Symptoms include:

 

Memory problems.

Muscle spasms.

Balance issues, difficulty walking or falls.

Blurred vision or visual hallucinations.

Unexplained, significant weight loss.

Behaviour changes.

Pain in the upper or lower limbs.

In April, Public Health began contacting people who have shown symptoms to participate in a survey in an attempt to figure out a potential cause. So far, five surveys have been conducted and another five will be conducted this week.

 

The new committee aims to review all of the cases over the next four months, allowing a further six to eight weeks to interview all patients and their families.

Shephard said that timeline will also depend on the availability of the neurologists.

 

While a number of similarities were drawn between the mystery syndrome and Creutzfeld-Jacob Disease, the most common form of human prion disease, all test results for known forms of prion disease have come back negative.

 

Most of the individuals under investigation were living in the southeastern and northeastern regions of New Brunswick, though the province said their investigation has found no evidence that residents of those regions are more at risk than those living elsewhere in the province.

 

Shephard said the province is working with a number of federal bodies to investigate the disease, including the Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease Surveillance System (CJDSS), the Public Health Agency of Canada, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency’s zoonotics division and subject matter experts from the B.C. Centre for Disease Control.

 

They are also working with some provincial bodies, like the Department of Environment and the Department of Aquaculture, as well as local governments.

 

“This investigation is larger than a single neurologist, or even the CJDSS could do on their own,” she said. “We must all work together to ensure the work is done, and the investigation robust.”

 

Shephard declined to say if the experts are investigating any specific environmental factors.

 

“We can’t have a narrow focus here. We must examine any and all possibilities, and as those possibilities evolve, we’ll certainly share them with you,” she told reporters.

 

“We need to allow the science to do their investigation and their work, and by focusing on any one element could just take us in the wrong direction.”

At least 48 people in Canada have come down with symptoms indicative of a brain disease.

Episodes of pain are often followed by trouble walking, speaking, or performing basic tasks.

Officials say they've ruled out environmental causes and human transmission, but they don't have a diagnosis yet.

 

Dozens of New Brunswick residents have been struck with mysterious symptoms that point to a degenerative brain disorder, and authorities still don't have an explanation for the debilitating illness.

 

A report leaked in March 2021 noted a cluster of cases of what looked like Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease: spasms, memory loss, hallucinations, and severe

weight loss

as the condition keeps people from being active.

 

At the time, 48 cases had been identified, with symptoms starting between 2013 and 2020. However, a separate whistleblower from one of New Brunswick's health authorities told the Guardian that the mysterious illness had affected close to 150 by January 2022, and that many of those who got sick were young, previously healthy adults.

 

An investigation into the cases, previously headed by Canadian federal scientists, has lagged since it fell on the province. Provincial officials have promised to publish another report about the cases soon, but the public as well as patients and families are still awaiting information, Leyland Cecco wrote for The Guardian.

 

But there's still no report, and the case data on New Brunswick's public health website hasn't been updated since May 2021. People sickened with the illness don't even know what to call it, as there's no name or official diagnosis for the mysterious neurological disease.

 

Leg pain that turned into vision loss was diagnosed as PTSD

For Terriline Porelle, it began with an "electric shock" pain in her leg during the summer of 2020, she told the Guardian. The pain crept up her arms and to her face in the days that followed. Soon, the 33-year-old's vision was like that of a 70-year-old, one optometrist told her.

 

One day, Porelle forgot how to write the letter "Q," and she went to a doctor for a brain scan. It came back normal, and provincial officials referred her to a neuropsychologist.

 

The specialist told Porelle she likely had PTSD. But Porelle has faced mental health challenges before, and she said the symptoms she has now are nothing like the anxiety and

depression

she's had in the past. She still struggles with declining mental function and says she relies on her partner for help with daily tasks.

 

"We've been given no resources from the government and no help," she said. "I don't know what to do. I try to keep positive, but it's hard. There are days when I don't know if I should even bother saving for retirement. Am I even going to live that long?"

 

Patients worry the investigation has slowed down

The January whisteblower told the Guardian that many cases with the symptom cluster have yet to be processed by the province, and many of the cases in backlog are among young people.

 

Of the cases reported so far, ages have ranged from 18 to 85. Nine people with illness have died, although the province notes that six of those individuals died of other known causes.

 

Previously, officials investigated and ruled out several environmental factors that could be causing the illness: blue-green algae, toxicity in shellfish, chronic wasting disease, or a toxic herbicide. None of the explanations have stuck, and some of the early patients have been left out of the loop.

 

Johanne Boucher, 63, told the Guardian she recently received a letter that said investigators would no longer be looking into her case. They suggested that she get some more tests — tests she said she had already taken — because her symptoms could be explained by Parkinson's disease or another form of brain degeneration.

 

For Boucher, who "can't even order a coffee" after completely losing her speech in late 2021, the news came as a shock. Her ability to speak deteriorated over four years, and she still doesn't have an explanation.
