In the evening of December 13, 2021, Members of Parliament, representatives of the Diplomatic Corps, members of Polonia and friends of Poland in Canada gathered at the Garden of Provinces and Territories adjacent to the Memorial of Victims of Communism Canada - Land of Refuge for a candlelight vigil.
The solemn ceremony started with the beautiful rendition of the national anthem of Canada and Poland performed by Marek Korkusinski.
Yvan Baker, MP delivered a letter from The Right Honourable Justin Trudeau, the Prime Minister of Canada, in which the PM paid “….tribute to the strength and spirit of Polish Canadians, and Polish communities around the world”. PM also expressed hope for “ … a future built on peace and mutual respect”. PM Trudeau also “wished everyone a memorable commemorative event and candle lighting ceremony”.
Tom Kmieć, MP delivered the statement from the Leader of the Official Opposition, The Right Honourable Erin O’Toole in which he stressed that “….Canada will always stand for those who suffer under the communist regime and will always support the fight for justice and freedom”.
The Embassy of the Republic of Poland was represented by the Chargé d'affaires, Krzysztof Lewandowski and the Consul Sebastian Szyszczynski. The Polish Embassy was also well engaged in preparations of the commemoration event. In his brief comments, Chargé d'affaires stressed that “on that day 40 years ago, Poland entered a two-year long night”. “We pay tribute and bow our heads to the freedom fighters”, said Mr. Lewandowski. He also thanked Canada for providing a haven for thousands of Polish refugees. He expressed his appreciation to the organizers for holding this ceremony.

December 13, marks dark day in Polish history when in 1981 communist government impose Martial Law in Poland and outlawed Solidarity movement.
Officially marked as Martial Law Victims’ Remembrance Day (Dzień Pamięci Ofiar Stanu Wojennego). On December 13th, 1981, the Communist government, under the guise of an illegal Military Council of National Salvation (WRON), imposed martial law in an effort to silence increasing civic opposition.
At the time, the Solidarity Movement (Solidarność) had been successfully rallying the Polish people in widespread protest of the state’s economic decline and was demanding political and economic reforms.
The military responded by arresting thousands of pro-democracy activists, imposing strict rules such as curfews and censorship, and soldiers became a constant presence on the streets. An estimated 91 people were killed during protests and demonstrations. Even after the end of martial law in July of 1983, many activists remained imprisoned for several more years.
Today, we remember the victims of Martial law, and we honour the sacrifices they made in the fight for a free and democratic Poland.

Last week, I introduced the landmark Strengthening American Cybersecurity Act to give the @ONCDPress, @CISAgov & others broad visibility into the cyberattacks taking place across our nation on a daily basis.
This bipartisan legislation will enable a whole-of-government response, mitigation, and warning to critical infrastructure and others of ongoing and imminent attacks.
This is especially timely now as our nation runs the risk of potential Russian cyberattacks in retaliation for US support of Ukraine.
At a hearing last week, a witness confirmed that Russia is targeting critical infrastructure and governmental organizations in Ukraine through cyberattacks in an effort to compromise the systems. Congress must pass this legislation to enhance our own cyber defense.
