It's an age thing, most over 40 still use pled as past tense. It's how they were taught. Today you plead guilty, tomorrow you could plead guilty, yesterday he pled guilty.
Except it's not the "correct way" to say it, it is an alternative way of saying it. Both are valid. It's like when they changed the words Antihistamine in commercials to be histamine blockers. Same thing, just different.
